Many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-cold-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traditional cold medicines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are safe to use during pregnancy, but some aren&rsquo;t&mdash;and still others are only safe to use during certain trimesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value='{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}' data-sheets-userformat='{\"2\":6849,\"3\":{\"1\":0},\"9\":1,\"10\":2,\"12\":0,\"14\":{\"1\":2,\"2\":0},\"15\":\"Arial\"}' data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s what you need to know about treating a cold during pregnancy, including what medications you can take and when, what treatments you should avoid, and what natural remedies may help alleviate your symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-cold-medicine-can-i-take-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What cold medicine can I take while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s important to remember that a cold is a viral illness&mdash;that means there&rsquo;s no cure, but you can manage your symptoms until you start feeling better, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/medical-advisory-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alyssa Dweck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an OB-GYN and medical advisor for INTIMINA in Westchester County, New York. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics won&rsquo;t make a viral illness go away more quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so you shouldn&rsquo;t use them unless you develop a secondary bacterial infection, like a sinus or upper respiratory infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s a breakdown of cold medicines you can safely use to manage your symptoms during pregnancy:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"fever-reducers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever reducers&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a fever during pregnancy, you can take the over-the-counter medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (acetaminophen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the short term, Dr. Dweck says, though studies have found long-term use may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9518858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of having a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Acetaminophen can also relieve cold symptoms like body aches, sore throat, and headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to take acetaminophen for cold symptoms, though, it&rsquo;s better to take it by itself and not in a combination medicaton. Meaning, take regular Tylenol and not Tylenol Cold and Flu (or any other variations, like Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe). That&rsquo;s because these combination formulations typically contain phenylephrine as a decongestant, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytoolboxgenomics.com\/about-us\/erika-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., chief medical officer and co-founder of Toolbox Genomics, which is not advisable for use during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"decongestants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decongestants&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to clear a stuffy nose is with the oral decongestant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-sinus-congestion-12hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pseudoephedrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pseudoephedrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Dr. Dweck says it&rsquo;s best to avoid Sudafed in your first trimester, but the drug is generally safe for use in the second and third trimesters. Pregnant individuals with high blood pressure, however, should always avoid Sudafed, especially throughout their pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re looking for a decongestant to use in the first trimester, Dr. Gray says nasal sprays, both steroid-based (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluticasone-propionate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and oxymetazoline-based (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-12-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Be aware that oxymetazoline-based decongestants if used for more than three consecutive days causes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rebound-congestion-nasal-spray-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebound congestion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cough-suppressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough suppressants&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealing with a nagging, hacking cough during pregnancy can be even more uncomfortable than usual, but there&rsquo;s good news: Dr. Gray says both Robitussin (dextromethorphan) and Robitussin DM (dextromethorphan-guaifenesin) are safe cough syrups to use during all three trimesters at the standard recommended doses.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gray also says guaifenesin, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/22078-expectorant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expectorant that can help break up mucus for more productive coughs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and which is often sold in tablet form as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex-maximum-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is also safe to take. Pregnant women can also safely apply a topical menthol, like Vicks VapoRub, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/is-vicks-vaporub-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relieve congestion and coughing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines can help decrease the allergic component and relieve post-nasal drip in the form of a scratchy throat and runny nose. Several antihistamines are considered safe to use during pregnancy, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK582675\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-generation drugs like Benadryl (diphenhydramine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/experts-and-stories\/ask-acog\/what-medicine-can-i-take-for-allergies-while-im-pregnant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newer antihistamines like Zyrtec (cetirizine) and Claritin (loratadine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cold-medications-to-avoid-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold medications to avoid during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the list of pregnancy-safe cold medications is probably a bit longer than you expected, there are still meds to avoid during pregnancy (unless your OB-GYN has decided the benefits outweigh the risks for you, individually). Here&rsquo;s what to skip.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"phenylephrine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenylephrine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2023, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-results-recent-advisory-committee-meeting-oral-phenylephrine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a common decongestant found on shelves, phenylephrine, is not actually effective to decrease congestion. Phenylephrine became popular after a federal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/information-drug-class\/legal-requirements-sale-and-purchase-drug-products-containing-pseudoephedrine-ephedrine-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">law was passed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2006 requiring sales of Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) to be moved behind the pharmacy counter (though you still don&rsquo;t need a prescription to get it). Phenylephrine, on the other hand, was available as a decongestant in many cold medications found right on pharmacy shelves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent evidence suggests phenylephrine doesn&rsquo;t work as a nasal decongestant, though&mdash;and because it carries the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a606008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nervousness, dizziness, and sleeplessness, it&rsquo;s best to avoid it when pregnant. This medication has risk and no proven benefit.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs-nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gray says pregnant women should exercise caution with NSAID pain relievers like aspirin, Advil or Motrin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and Aleve (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naprosyn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK582759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a small risk of congenital disabilities associated with NSAID use in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy and a greater risk of pregnancy complications and congenital disabilities associated with use after 20 weeks gestation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"codeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codeine&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/codeine-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codeine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is sometimes added to combination cough suppressants to help people with severe coughs, but because it&rsquo;s an opioid, pregnant individuals should not take it. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK582651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking codeine during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase your risk for pregnancy complications like premature birth, low birth weight, postpartum hemorrhage, and infant opioid withdrawal symptoms after birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"combination-formulations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination formulations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many cold medicines contain multiple active ingredients, which can make it even more confusing to determine if they&rsquo;re safe. For example, NyQuil and DayQuil often contain pregnancy-safe acetaminophen and dextromethorphan but may also contain a small amount of alcohol and phenylephrine, neither of which are considered safe for use during pregnancy, says Gray. (Both ingredients, she explains, have been associated with an elevated risk of birth defects).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Theraflu preparations&mdash;of which there are many variations&mdash;also typically include phenylephrine, so those are not safe to take during pregnancy, either.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dweck says any pregnant woman considering a cold formulation with multiple ingredients should closely vet each one separately to make sure it&rsquo;s pregnancy-safe. In general, it&rsquo;s better to avoid combination formulas and take individual doses of only the medications you actually need and that are safe during pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"home-remedies-for-a-cold-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home remedies for a cold during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably won&rsquo;t love this recommendation, but the fastest way to get rid of a cold while pregnant isn&rsquo;t by taking any of the safe medications listed above&mdash;it&rsquo;s by getting plenty of rest and fluids. It seems simple enough, but slowing down for several days to recover from a cold is easier said than done in many cases.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-treat-a-cold\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home remedies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may speed up the recovery process and help kick your cold to the curb while pregnant:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay hydrated.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Increasing your fluid intake will help your body fight the viral infection, so drink lots of water, sip clear broth and herbal tea, or even mix up some Jell-O. While you&rsquo;re at it, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/health-wellness\/healtharticle.6-natural-cold-remedies-try-this-winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limit or avoid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beverages like soda and coffee, which can have the opposite effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Increase sleep.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It might be difficult if your symptoms are making you uncomfortable, but try to get as much sleep as possible. If true shuteye evades you, try to at least rest&nbsp; (versus working, running errands, or doing housework) as much as possible&mdash;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/achs.edu\/blog\/2018\/02\/27\/how-to-recover-from-illness-faster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing everyday stress allows your body to recover faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use a humidifier.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It may help to run a humidifier or even inhale warm steam; moisture can keep your nasal passages from drying out and feeling even more swollen and congested, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002104.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it may help loosen and clear out mucus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use saline rinses.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/pregnancy-week-by-week\/expert-answers\/allergy-medications\/faq-20058122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saline rinses are pregnancy-safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this practice can flush out virus particles and mucus, soothe your nasal passages, and keep your sinuses clear. Examples of this are the Neti Pot.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat nutritious foods.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins and nutrients (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/fight-off-the-flu-with-nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C and beta carotene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that can boost the immune system when you&rsquo;re sick. Meanwhile, ginger and turmeric are often touted as at-home cold remedies for their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9229778\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined anti-inflammatory benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so drink some homemade tea&mdash;with honey, to soothe your throat!&mdash;or make an anti-inflammatory chicken soup. Some studies suggest curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, may even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7693600\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have antiviral properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-your-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see your healthcare provider&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anytime you have a question about safe medications to take during pregnancy, contact your healthcare provider or local pharmacist.
