Here we look at the medical research behind shilajit and explore the health and wellness benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"10-health-benefits-of-shilajit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 health benefits of shilajit<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilajit contains an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1186\/s12970-019-0270-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abundance of fulvic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, humic acid, minerals, proteins, and dibenzo-\u03b1-pyrones\u2014an important group of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6271090\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolites that have<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antioxidant, antiallergic, and antimicrobial properties. Improve bone health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers in the above-mentioned randomized study found a significant increase in bone mineral density in a group of postmenopausal women receiving shilajit supplementation compared to a group receiving a placebo. The study indicates that by decreasing bone turnover, shilajit may reduce bone loss and the risk of bone fractures and osteoporosis\u2014particularly in high-risk populations. Bone turnover is the rate at which bone cells called osteoclasts break down bone tissues to rebuild the bones. An accelerated bone turnover increases the risk of osteoporosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-improve-symptoms-of-alzheimer-s-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Traditional medicine practitioners believe that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2876922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shilajit eases these symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of its high fulvic acid and mineral content, which helps stimulate the immune system and promotes energy production in the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-treat-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-cfs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilajit means \u201cconqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness\u201d in Sanskrit, which comes from traditional Indian practitioners&#8217; belief that the supplement can eliminate weakness or fatigue with its rejuvenating effect. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0378874112003893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012 animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers induced chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in rats for 21 days. They found that shilajit helped reduce the symptoms of CFS by preventing problems in the mitochondria, also known as the powerhouse units inside cells. Although promising, more research is needed to confirm if these benefits extend to humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-support-men-s-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Support men\u2019s health\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilajit is believed to improve reproductive health and fertility in men by increasing total sperm count, sperm motility, and testosterone levels. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1439-0272.2009.00956.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2010 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found almost 50% of a group of 60 infertile males had an increase in sperm count after taking shilajit twice a day for 90 days. In another<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/and.12482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that enrolled 96 males between the ages of 45 and 55, researchers found an increase in total testosterone levels in the group receiving shilajit supplements for 90 days compared to the group receiving placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-treat-iron-deficiency-anemia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Treat iron-deficiency anemia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hgb-blood-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of healthy red blood cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or hemoglobin in the blood can lead to anemia. Iron deficiency can also cause a type of anemia called iron deficiency anemia, which causes symptoms like headache, weakness, and fatigue. Since iron is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3609271\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a mineral in shilajit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it may help treat iron deficiency anemia, as indicated by an older <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/288266508_Shilajit_in_management_of_iron_deficiency_anaemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carried out on rat models. After administering shilajit to a group of lab rats prior to inducing injury to their heart muscle, researchers in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12012-014-9245-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular Toxicology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the group that received the shilajit treatment had less heart damage compared to the group that did not receive it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3330960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2003 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where researchers placed participants into two groups\u2014a placebo group and a shilajit receiving group\u2014the researchers found a decrease in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the shilajit group. Excess cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood can harden the arteries and cause plaques, increasing the risk of developing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-may-help-boost-muscle-repair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. May help boost muscle repair<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/jmf.2016.0010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that assessed how skeletal muscle messenger RNA responds to shilajit, people with obesity who took the supplement responded better to exercise than those who didn\u2019t. Shilajit may help activate genes that enable the skeletal muscles to adapt quickly to new workouts. In other words, shilajit may help improve muscle repair, especially in certain people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-use-shilajit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use shilajit<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilajit supplements are available in liquid, powder, or capsule form. The recommended dose is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2876922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300 mg to 500 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per day. The powder form is best absorbed when taken with milk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any supplement, discuss all medications and other supplements you are taking with a healthcare provider before starting shilajit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"shilajit-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilajit side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any supplement, it is possible to experience side effects when taking shilajit. If you experience a severe allergic reaction (such as trouble breathing), seek immediate medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking shilajit without an expert\u2019s supervision is risky, considering there is no concrete scientific evidence to determine a standard dose for this supplement. Meaning, you could accidentally take too much. One of the possible results of this is an iron overload. Since shilajit contains iron, taking too much within a short time may cause excess iron to accumulate in different body organs, including the heart, liver, and spleen, potentially damaging these organs in some people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-shilajit-safe-for-everyone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is shilajit safe for everyone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Silcox, shilajit is known as a sacred herb in ayurveda\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean it is safe for everyone. If you take any medications, be sure to check with your prescribing healthcare provider to avoid potential drug interactions. People on hypertensive medications, specifically, may want to avoid shilajit as the combination may cause a drastic drop in blood pressure. It\u2019s important to work with an educated provider or practitioner who can recommend the best brands to buy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-should-you-take-shilajit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Should you take shilajit?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilajit is a powerful supplement traditionally used to build strength and boost fertility. Ayurvedic practitioners see it as a master herb for boosting energy, mood, memory, brain health, blood sugar balance, and the overall detoxification and oxygenation of the body. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But \u201cnobody should ever take shilajit without consulting with their ayurvedic clinician or other qualified holistic healthcare practitioners,\u201d Ahern says.
