In fact, the market for testosterone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a.k.a. \u201cT boosters,\u201d is booming: in 2022, global sales of testosterone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reached nearly $73 million and are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.factmr.com\/report\/testosterone-booster-supplements-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projected to keep growing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But do these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> actually work, and are they safe? Here\u2019s what you need to know about the effectiveness of using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase testosterone levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the six <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the most scientific evidence supporting their use.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-absorption\/\"><b>How to make sure you absorb your <\/b><b>supplements<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-supplements-increase-testosterone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase testosterone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are dozens of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the market today claiming to have positive effects on testosterone levels and conditions like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the truth is there isn\u2019t a lot of evidence proving that taking vitamins or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can promote <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher testosterone levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in any meaningful way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6920068\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that less than 25% of the 50 testosterone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evaluated had scientific research backing their positive effects on testosterone (even though nearly all of them\u201490%\u2014purported to boost T). Meanwhile, more than half of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evaluated had no clear scientific evidence recommending their use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does that mean all T-booster <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a waste of money? In that study, participants took 10 milligrams of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per kilogram of body weight each day, but Wiemann notes this formula could cause you to take far more than the recommended daily allowance of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per day for adult men (between 400 and 420 milligrams).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA 175-pound man would be supplementing with nearly 800 milligrams of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she says, warning that this level of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplementation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could cause irregular heartbeat, slowed breathing, and low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and should be discussed with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider before starting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Zinc<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6010824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zinc plays an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important role<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in regulating male hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.promescent.com\/pages\/jed-kaminetsky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jed Kaminetsky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, urologist and medical director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jedkaminetsky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhattan Medical Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it appears that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zinc has a positive effect on the cells in the testes that produce testosterone. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0946672X22002048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that zinc deficiency can decrease testosterone\u2014and a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zinc supplement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could boost it\u2014but many of the studies reviewed were on animals. While it seems like zinc might be helpful, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13685538.2019.1573220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplementation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is lacking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, if you\u2019re interested in trying zinc to boost your T, Dr. Kaminetsky recommends taking 11 milligrams per day. Be careful if you\u2019re taking certain antibiotics, such as tetracyclines and quinolones, though: he says zinc is known to decrease how much of the antibiotic the body absorbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-ashwagandha\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashwagandha<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kaminetsky says the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antioxidant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> properties in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashwagandha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a shrub from the nightshade family, are thought to protect the testes from oxidative damage and may also increase the production of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">luteinizing hormone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which allow for better <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone production<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the amount used in most studies related to boosting T levels, Dr. Kaminetsky suggests taking a minimum of 250 milligrams of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashwagandha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per day. That said, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashwagandha extract<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be safe to take with certain medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking [it] with sedative medications, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lorazepam-vs-diazepam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may cause breathing problems and too much sleepiness,\u201d says Dr. Kaminetsky, \u201c[and] if taken with diabetes medications, it may cause blood sugar levels to drop too low.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-fenugreek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Fenugreek<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The herb fenugreek is often promoted as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501779\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-medicinal way to help lactating mothers produce more breastmilk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it may <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boost testosterone levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. According to Dr. Kaminetsky, fenugreek contains plant-based compounds called saponins that may cause an increase in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone production<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though you would likely have to take between 500 and 600 milligrams per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Kaminetsky notes that when taken with medications that slow blood clotting, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fenugreek extract<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some T boosters include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and B12, but the evidence points more strongly to the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-d-benefits-for-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D in naturally improving men\u2019s overall health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Men with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12020-020-02482-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D deficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low testosterone levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21154195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2011 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that men taking vitamin D had higher levels of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">total testosterone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free testosterone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> group. In that study, men took 3,332 IU of vitamin D every day for one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effect of vitamin D supplementation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on testosterone isn\u2019t confirmed; other studies have not had similar results as the 2011 study. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6842386\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, had participants take 20,000 IU of vitamin D weekly for 12 weeks, but no <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant increase<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in testosterone levels was measured at the end of the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-tongkat-ali\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Tongkat ali<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tongkat ali, sometimes called longjack, is an Asian botanical ingredient contained in many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone boosters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6274257\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herbal remedy often used for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infertility<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sexual dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in other countries, but its use in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still relatively new and unstudied. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9415500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though, does show promise: seven of the nine studies reviewed showed an increase in testosterone levels after <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplementation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with tongkat ali.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because this research is still fairly new, it\u2019s unclear what an appropriate dosage of tongkat ali would be, but studies have tested daily doses between 100 and 600 milligrams. It\u2019s also unclear how much tongkat ali is too much; some study participants in the 2022 review reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of itching and GI distress at higher levels. In addition, tongkat ali may increase the effects of blood sugar medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/botanicalinstitute.org\/tongkat-ali-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and decrease the absorption of a blood pressure medication called propranolol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-are-the-best-supplements-to-increase-testosterone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to increase testosterone?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on what our experts have shared, all of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural testosterone boosters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body of evidence supporting their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but a few clearly have more than others. Fenugreek, tongkat ali, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashwagandha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, were found to have the strongest evidence out of 10 substances for raising testosterone in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-396X\/2\/2\/11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean the other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone-boosting supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on this list couldn\u2019t help raise your T, but that there\u2019s less evidence recommending their use. This could be because the majority of studies were performed on animals, not humans, or because some studies suggest they\u2019re effective while others show no improvement in testosterone levels, prompting experts to call for more research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for increasing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levels of testosterone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fenugreek, tongkat ali, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashwagandha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some of the most commonly recommended based on research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-supplements-are-bad-for-your-testosterone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are bad for your testosterone?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kaminetsky says there isn\u2019t much information on any specific vitamin or nutrient decreasing testosterone, but there have been studies on other dietary substances and lower levels of this hormone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol, for one, has been shown to decrease testosterone in high amounts, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6761906\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1998 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a newer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9708857\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
