Dr. Pepin specifically recommends eating prunes or drinking prune juice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try a stool softener. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/stool-softener\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stool softeners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are over-the-counter medications that increase the water retained in stools so that it moves through the digestive system more smoothly. While stool softeners can provide relief, you may want to consult a healthcare provider before starting a new medication,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>As a last resort, try a <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/laxatives\/\"><b>laxative<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cNatural laxatives called sennosides [are] milder than stimulant laxatives,\u201d says Dr. Pepin. However, she cautions that even \u201cnatural\u201d laxatives should not be used for longer than two weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Work with your healthcare provider to find the correct dose. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have side effects that do not go away or worsen, you may need a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cymbalta\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher or lower dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even temporarily.
