However, if left untreated, some causes, such as untreated UTIs, can lead to more severe complications, including kidney infections.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-does-dysuria-painful-urination-feel-like\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does dysuria (painful urination) feel like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dysuria most commonly feels like a burning sensation before, during, or after urination. Symptoms can vary, however; some people with dysuria describe a stinging or itching sensation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men sometimes experience pain in the penis before and after urination. Symptoms in women can be internal or external.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"should-i-be-worried-about-burning-during-urination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I be worried about burning during urination?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the underlying cause, painful urination may resolve on its own or after treatment with antibiotics. However, &ldquo;if burning with urination continues for more than a few days, you should seek medical attention since the causes of painful urination could be more serious,&rdquo; says Dr. Meyer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Meyer, possible complications of untreated painful urination can include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/recurrent-uti\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recurrent UTIs<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarring of the urinary tract<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pain and discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spread of STIs (in cases caused by sexually transmitted infections)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;It&rsquo;s important to seek medical attention if you have symptoms in addition to burning or pain with urination, such as fever, abdominal pain, back pain, or an abnormal discharge from the urethra or vagina,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pihhealth.org\/find-a-doctor\/physician-profile-advanced\/milan-shah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milan Shah, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified urologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pihhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PIH Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;These could be harbingers of something a lot more serious going on,&rdquo; says Dr. Shah. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Usually, if someone&#8217;s having symptoms that are systemic fevers and chills, vomiting, nausea, they would warrant more urgent or emergency attention.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most serious possible complications of untreated painful urination is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urosepsis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a life-threatening bloodstream infection caused by an untreated, undertreated, or resistant urinary tract infection. Urosepsis could lead to renal failure, septic shock, and even death without immediate treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning urination due to an STI, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, requires medical attention and antibiotic treatment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bladder stone also may require medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;If someone has a bladder stone, usually if it&#8217;s small, they may pass it. If it&#8217;s much larger, they&#8217;ll need surgery,&rdquo; says Dr. Shah. &ldquo;Until that stone is gone, that dysuria or that burning of the painful urination will likely not resolve. If it&#8217;s an infection, antibiotics can help resolve that burning after an appropriate course of treatment.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Depending on your symptoms and medical history, you may see a primary care physician, urgent care physician, urologist, gynecologist (for women), or an infectious disease specialist,&rdquo; says Dr. Meyer. &ldquo;If you experience severe symptoms or signs of a serious infection, consider going to the emergency room.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-is-the-cause-of-painful-urination-diagnosed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is the cause of painful urination diagnosed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/003145.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnose the cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of painful urination, your healthcare provider will order a urine culture using a special kit with a cup, lid, and wipes for a &ldquo;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007487.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean catch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rdquo; urine sample collected at home or at the provider&rsquo;s office. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/003751.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urine culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identifies bacteria or other germs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you cannot urinate on your own, your healthcare provider can collect a urine sample by inserting a catheter (a thin rubber tube) into the bladder through the urethra. This is rarely performed, due to the discomfort encountered with the passage of the catheter. For women with vaginal discharge, a pelvic exam or examination of vaginal fluids is necessary. For men with penile discharge, a urine culture is usually sufficient to reveal which infection is present. Although a medical provider (or a patient) can obtain penile discharge with a swab and send it to a lab for evaluation, this is a rare occurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may ask about your history of urinary tract infections or recent sexual activity to rule out or test for an STI. Other tests for burning urination may include an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys or an examination of the inside of the bladder with a camera called a cystoscope.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-painful-urination-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does painful urination last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painful urination usually resolves within one or two days.
