Here&rsquo;s what you need to know if your dentist diagnoses you with a tooth infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-tooth-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a tooth infection?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-conditions\/tooth-abscess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tooth infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a pocket of pus, also known as an abscess, caused by bacteria. According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7861949\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Journal of Dentistry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tooth infections can occur as a result of cavities or tooth decay, trauma to the tooth, periodontal diseases, or poor oral hygiene, among other causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an infected tooth, you may notice symptoms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throbbing in the jaw, neck, or ear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tooth pain with chewing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to hot and cold foods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foul odor in the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s important to treat a tooth infection promptly. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the bones surrounding the tooth, your jaw, or other areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-are-antibiotics-used-for-a-tooth-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When are antibiotics used for a tooth infection?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of dental treatment for an infected tooth is to eliminate the bacteria and save the tooth. To do that, your dentist may prescribe oral antibiotics along with performing a procedure to drain the abscess, perform a root canal to remove infected tissue within the tooth, or extract the tooth. Intravenous antibiotics may be given if you have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of systemic infection, like a fever or fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A weakened immune system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A serious underlying health condition<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from these situations with an active infection, antibiotics can also be given in dentistry to prevent infection. For example, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-health\/some-heart-patients-need-antibiotics-before-dental-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart patients are prescribed antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before undergoing dental work to prevent infection-causing bacteria in their mouths from traveling to their hearts. However, preventive (or prophylactic) antibiotics to ward off potential infections are not given as commonly as they once were. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/en\/resources\/research\/science-and-research-institute\/oral-health-topics\/antibiotic-prophylaxis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Dental Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ADA), recent guidelines have reduced the groups of patients for whom antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before prescribing an antibiotic, your dentist will consider several factors. &ldquo;Dental health providers evaluate the need and a patient&rsquo;s medical and dental history and weigh risks with prescribing medication,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swaustindental.com\/dr-kate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kate Zoumboukos, DMD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dentist at SW Austin Dental in Austin, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all types of tooth infections require antibiotics. If your dentist does not recommend an antibiotic, there&rsquo;s a reason for that, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dentistry.uth.edu\/directory\/profile.htm?id=a6693466-9ca0-4332-bb74-7323b0a24660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amelia Hartzell, DMD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dentist with UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Unnecessarily taking antibiotics actually leads to resistance to the antibiotics and more difficulty treating these infections in the future,&rdquo; Dr. Hartzell says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-antibiotics-are-good-for-a-tooth-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which antibiotics are good for a tooth infection?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first-line treatment for a dental infection is usually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless you&rsquo;re allergic to penicillin. The second-line therapy for a tooth infection, if you are allergic to the penicillin class, is typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clindamycin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clindamycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cephalexin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cephalexin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If amoxicillin or azithromycin don&rsquo;t work, your dentist might add on a different antibiotic, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metronidazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another possibility is that your dentist might prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a685024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin with clavulanic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly known by the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/augmentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augmentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just a little bit stronger, and it treats a broader range of bacteria,&rdquo; Dr. Hartzell says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dentists typically choose antibiotics based on the current ADA guidelines, the type of bacteria causing the infection, and your medical history.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-antibiotics-take-to-work-for-a-tooth-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do antibiotics take to work for a tooth infection?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your tooth infection requires antibiotics to treat it, a typical course would be three to seven days. Depending on the antibiotic, you will likely take a dose one to four times a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a typical course of oral amoxicillin is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/-\/media\/project\/ada-organization\/ada\/ada-org\/files\/resources\/research\/ada_chairside_guide_antibiotics_ta.pdf?rev=d23ac4651660443a9ba33d925f97ecd7&amp;hash=522B2C21AF012B519419FA7E6C836F4B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, three times per day for three to seven days, according to the ADA. With oral azithromycin, you start out with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/-\/media\/project\/ada-organization\/ada\/ada-org\/files\/resources\/research\/ada_chairside_guide_antibiotics_ta.pdf?rev=d23ac4651660443a9ba33d925f97ecd7&amp;hash=522B2C21AF012B519419FA7E6C836F4B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose on the first day. After that, you&rsquo;ll take 250 mg per day for an additional four days.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your dentist prescribes an antibiotic for your tooth infection, it&rsquo;s important that you take the entire course of the antibiotic as prescribed. You may feel better before you finish taking the entire course, but it is best to complete the treatment course that your healthcare provider recommends. In recent years, the duration of recommended antibiotic courses has been shorter, still providing good effectiveness and possibly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/antimicrobial-resistance-does-stopping-a-course-of-antibiotics-early-lead-to-antibiotic-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading to less drug-resistant bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-there-over-the-counter-remedies-for-a-tooth-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there over-the-counter remedies for a tooth infection?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;There are no home remedies or watch-and-wait strategies that will effectively treat a tooth infection,&rdquo; Dr. Hartzell says. &ldquo;You have to control the source of the infection with treatment. That&rsquo;s like the first line.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, you likely can&rsquo;t avoid a trip to the dentist. However, you can find pain relief over the counter with painkillers such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-8-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tooth-infection-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tooth infection prevention&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it&rsquo;s better to avoid getting a tooth infection to begin with. That&rsquo;s why prevention is important. Good oral hygiene is a key component of that because poor oral hygiene is a very common cause of tooth infections, according to Dr. Hartzell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your best bet when it comes to tooth infection prevention&mdash;and good overall oral health&mdash;includes these strategies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brush your teeth twice a day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use fluoride toothpaste<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floss daily<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a mouthwash or mouth rinse that contains fluoride<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek regular dental care (usually every six months, but it can vary)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Incorporation of an electric toothbrush or oral irrigator may be helpful, especially with dexterity challenges or hard-to-reach places in your mouth,&rdquo; Dr. Zoumboukos says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line: Try to prioritize good dental health, and you may be able to ward off tooth infections. However, if you do notice that something seems off, see your dentist as soon as possible.
