Vaginal discharge is perfectly normal, and it\u2019s also normal for the amount of discharge to ebb and flow throughout the month. If you\u2019re seeing an increase in vaginal discharge before your period or if you are noticing changes in discharge texture, you aren\u2019t alone. It\u2019s common for vaginal discharge to change before periods, at various points in your menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, we\u2019ll take a closer look at vaginal discharge before periods, including what discharge looks like before a period, what causes cervical mucus to change before a period, and when vaginal discharge changes might be a reason to visit a healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does discharge look like before a period?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White discharge and clear discharge without a noticeable smell are considered normal, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/vulvovaginal-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cBefore menstruation, the discharge may change in texture and appearance,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drpatelobgyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rakhee Patel, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinewoodfamily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinewood Family Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Jersey City, New Jersey. \u201cTypically, the discharge can be white or creamy in color and might feel sticky to the touch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens to discharge before a period is unique to each woman. \u201cIt&#8217;s usually clear to white, with a creamy or thick texture like lotion,\u201d says Shandra Scruggs, RN, a labor and delivery nurse and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/simplybirthed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply Birthed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSome people notice a small to moderate amount of vaginal discharge, which might get slightly thicker as their period approaches.\u201d It\u2019s also normal to notice an increase in thin, white, milky, and mild-smelling discharge, Scruggs says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/period-blood-color\/\"><b>What does the color of your period mean?<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/brown-discharge-mid-cycle-causes\/\"><b>What causes brown discharge?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does discharge increase before a period?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s common for vaginal discharge to increase before your period,\u201d Scruggs says. \u201cAs your body gets ready for menstruation, hormone levels change, affecting the amount and texture of vaginal discharge.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women secrete about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/vaginal-discharge-in-adult-women-beyond-the-basics\/print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 ml to 5 ml of vaginal discharge every day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though the amount and texture change throughout the menstrual cycle and a woman\u2019s lifetime. Some women experience quite a bit of discharge during the luteal phase before their periods, but it will usually be less than their regular menstrual flow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe increase in discharge typically lasts 10 or more days and helps to lubricate the vagina in preparation for a potential pregnancy,\u201d Scruggs says. Most women tend to experience lower levels of vaginal discharge after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/menopause-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to decreasing estrogen levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes discharge?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as women hit puberty, they begin to have vaginal discharge. Having vaginal discharge is normal and is nothing to be concerned about. Vaginal discharge keeps your vagina healthy, balanced, and clean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVarious factors can affect discharge differences before your period, including hormonal factors, pregnancy, and hormonal birth control,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bywinona.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Green, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OB-GYN and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bywinona.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are some of the most common causes of vaginal discharge before your period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal fluctuations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By far, the most common cause of vaginal discharge before your period is hormonal changes. Throughout your menstrual cycle, your<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/home\/women-s-health-issues\/biology-of-the-female-reproductive-system\/menstrual-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormones fluctuate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, at the beginning of your cycle, both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/estrogens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and progesterone are low. Toward the middle of your cycle, as your ovaries prepare to release an egg, estrogen levels rise, along with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone. After ovulation, both estrogen and progesterone dominate, and both drop right before your period begins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the days leading up to your period, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate,\u201d Dr. Green says. \u201cThese hormonal changes can stimulate the glands in the cervix to produce more mucus, leading to increased discharge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estrogen causes an increase in cervical mucus that is thinner while progesterone causes an increase in thicker cervical mucus. Cervical mucus is part of vaginal discharge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal birth control\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal contraception, which includes birth control pills, injections, patches, implants, and hormonal IUDs, can have various<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/campus-life\/health\/services\/promotion\/content\/what-are-side-effects-birth-control-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, mood changes, and spotting. Changes in vaginal discharge is a lesser-known, but common side effect of hormonal birth control, according to Dr. Patel. For example, birth control pills can \u201cimpact the consistency and volume of the discharge,\u201d Dr. Patel says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPregnancy often results in an increased volume of discharge because of more blood flow to the pelvic area and increased hormone production,\u201d Dr. Patel says. This increased discharge lasts throughout your pregnancy and is called<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8377920\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leukorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis type of discharge is thin, white, milky, and has a mild odor,\u201d Dr. Patel says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most women don\u2019t notice obvious changes in their vaginal discharge in very early pregnancy, such as right before a missed period. But for some women, increased discharge can be one of the early indicators of pregnancy, Dr. Patel explains. Another possible early sign of pregnancy is light spotting around the time you expect your period. This may be a sign of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/24536-implantation-bleeding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation spotting or bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which occurs when your fertilized egg implants inside the uterine lining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal causes of discharge before your period<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal changes, birth control side effects, and pregnancy are all normal and common causes of vaginal discharge before your period. At times, though, infections and other health conditions may cause discharge changes before your period. These are not normal and may require a visit to your healthcare provider. Here\u2019s what to know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeast infections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeast infections, known as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fungal\/diseases\/candidiasis\/genital\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candida<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, occur because of an overgrowth of yeast or fungus in the vagina. This can cause all kinds of uncomfortable symptoms, such as itching and burning. It can also cause changes in your vaginal discharge, including before your period. \u201cYeast infections can cause thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge,\u201d Scruggs says. If you have these symptoms, it could be a sign of an infection and you should visit a healthcare provider for care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fungal\/diseases\/candidiasis\/genital\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatments for vaginal yeast infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include antifungal medications, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluconazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an oral prescription antifungal medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/monistat-7-complete-therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nystatin, boric acid, or, which are antifungal medications that are applied inside the vagina\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sexually transmitted infection (STI) may cause changes in your vaginal discharge before your period. STIs are caused by a number of different pathogens, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, mycoplasma, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/trichomoniasis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trichomoniasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. STIs may cause abnormal vaginal discharge, abnormal bleeding, swelling, bumps, warts, sores, burning, itching, and pain during sex or urination<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome STIs, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, can lead to discharge abnormalities in color, consistency, and odor compared to regular menstrual cycle-related discharge,\u201d Scruggs says. You may also notice increased discharge and foul-smelling discharge, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9138-sexually-transmitted-diseases--infections-stds--stis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If your discharge is yellow, green, extra thick, or foul-smelling, see your healthcare provider to check for STIs. Treatments for STIs depend on which STI you are diagnosed with, but options may include antibiotics and antiviral medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial vaginosis\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial vaginosis is the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common vaginal infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adolescent girls and women during their reproductive years. It\u2019s caused by the overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria. One of its most common symptoms is changes in your vaginal discharge, which you may notice at any time during your cycle, including right before your period. \u201cBacterial vaginosis may result in a thin, grayish discharge with a fishy smell,\u201d Scruggs explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial vaginosis is most commonly treated with prescribed antibiotics like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metronidazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clindamycin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clindamycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/solosec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secnidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tinidazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tinidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve noticed that you seem to have a lot of discharge\u2014before your period or otherwise\u2014 you might be wondering if there\u2019s any action you need to take. Most of the time, there\u2019s nothing you need to do.<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a substantial amount of discharge is quite common for many women and is often a natural and normal part of their monthly cycle,\u201d Dr. Patel says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Green agrees, and urges women not to compare themselves to others or what their idea of \u201cnormal\u201d discharge is. \u201cDischarge is unique from individual to individual, including in consistency and volume,\u201d he says. It\u2019s most important to recognize what\u2019s usual for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, there are some vaginal discharge symptoms that may require you to visit a healthcare provider for medical advice or care. \u201cThe most telling signal to recognize a problem is a fast, drastic change, especially in smell, color, or texture of the vaginal discharge\u2013or symptoms like pain or itching,\u201d Dr. Green says. If your discharge is foul smelling, brown, green, or yellow, or causes pain or itching, you should see your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any of these symptoms could be an indicator of an infection or another underlying issue. \u201cGenerally speaking, any unexpected change in vaginal discharge or any symptom that causes concern should warrant a consultation with a healthcare provider,\u201d Dr. Patel says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vaginal discharge is a fluid secreted from the vagina.
