These interactions can cause or worsen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as dizziness, sedation, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-blood-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orthostatic hypotension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Awareness of these interactions is important, as they can also affect <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amitriptyline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rsquo;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"amitriptyline-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amitriptyline<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=1e6d2c80-fbc8-444e-bdd3-6a91fe1b95bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amitriptyline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interacts with various medications. The mechanism by which they interact varies based on each category. You will even see some of these medicines in two categories, meaning they can interact with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in multiple ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drugs-that-increase-the-risk-of-serotonin-syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that increase the risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/serotonin-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition caused by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels that are too high. While an appropriate amount of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is associated with calmness and happiness, too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be dangerous. Some instances where <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome may occur include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take more than one medication that affects <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take too much of a medicine that increases <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels (either on purpose or by accident)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start taking&mdash;or increase the dose of&mdash;a drug that increases <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a medical emergency. Symptoms may start mild but can progress quickly to death if left untreated. If you have any symptoms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome, get emergency medical help right away. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome symptoms may include anxiety, agitation, restlessness, mood changes, confusion, incoordination, sweating or overheating, fast <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, high <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shaking, dilated pupils, stiff muscles, or stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels, other medicines that affect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the potential to interact with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-for-anxiety-and-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAO <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), in particular, are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contraindicated<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (should never be used) in people who take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At least 14 days must pass between using an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Examples of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyvox\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyvox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (linezolid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/marplan\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marplan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isocarboxazid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nardil\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nardil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenelzine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eldepryl (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selegiline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/parnate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parnate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tranylcypromine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methylene blue.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many other medications also increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels. This does not always mean the combination needs to be avoided. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will determine if the combination with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is safe. If one of these medications is taken with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the patient will be closely monitored for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome symptoms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples of medications that affect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels include but are not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reuptake<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lexapro\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (escitalopram), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxycontin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OxyContin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oxycodone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/buspirone-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BuSpar<\/span><\/a><span 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"drugs-that-cause-cns-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central nervous system (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) depression is a slowing down of brain activity. Certain drugs, such as medications that help you sleep, anxiety medications, and pain medications, cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression. While doing so may be useful to how they work (for example, insomnia medications slow down the nervous system, which causes relaxation and helps you sleep), too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression can cause complications. These can range from extreme sedation and motor impairment to slowed breathing, loss of consciousness, coma, and death in severe cases. Combining two medications that cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression can be dangerous. Because alcohol can also cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression, you should ask your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about safe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you drink alcohol. Certain cough, cold, and flu medications contain an antihistamine&mdash;and a small amount of alcohol&mdash;which can also cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression.
