That being said, people swear by all kinds of hangover remedies like raw eggs, vitamin C, bananas, Korean pear juice, ginseng, red ginseng, sodium bicarbonate, and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"is-hair-of-the-dog-good-for-hangover-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is \u201chair of the dog\u201d good for hangover headaches?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common myths about treating a headache after drinking alcohol is that it can be treated by drinking more alcohol. This is often called taking the \u201chair of the dog that bit you.\u201d But it\u2019s a bad idea, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/saya-nagori-md-9a273639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saya Nagori<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, who is Chief Medical Officer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyefacts.com\/dr-saya-nagori\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EyeFacts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis inhibits your body\u2019s natural healing process and sucks you into a harmful cycle of non-recovery: you will have to face symptoms sooner or later.\u201d It&#8217;s one of the worst things a hangover sufferer can do and often leads to an even worse hangover or may contribute to alcohol addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-exercise-help-hangover-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does exercise help hangover headaches?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise may have positive effects on hangover headaches, but it\u2019s not for every case. \u201dExercise can help release endorphins, which can ease headaches,\u201d Dr. Nagori says. \u201dBut some may feel extremely nauseated.\u201d Exercise may exacerbate their symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-drinking-coffee-help-hangover-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does drinking coffee help hangover headaches?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to avoid caffeine withdrawal, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sean-ormond-443073169\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sean Ormond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atlaspainspecialists.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas Pain Specialists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Glendale, AZ.\u201dIf you regularly consume caffeine and miss your usual dose because of drinking, you might be experiencing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-caffeine-headache\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caffeine withdrawal headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Dr. Ormond says that in these cases, having one\u2019s regular cup of coffee or tea might help a hangover headache. However, it\u2019s important to be cautious, as caffeine can also exacerbate dehydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Nagori said she recommends taking B vitamins and drinking black coffee for nutrients and caffeine. \u201cBoth help ease the pain of a hangover and make your body recover quicker.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"are-there-specific-foods-or-drinks-known-to-alleviate-hangover-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there specific foods or drinks known to alleviate hangover headaches?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-carb food and drinking a glass of water or sports drinks are other recommendations from Dr. Nagori. Sports drinks such as Gatorade contain electrolytes, which can help restore the salt and potassium that\u2019s lost from drinking alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bouillon soup can also help correct the electrolyte imbalance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFoods rich in vitamins and minerals, like fruits and whole grains, can help alleviate some hangover symptoms,\u201d Dr. Ormond says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myhealth.ucsd.edu\/RelatedItems\/6,757294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an herbal blend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Barbados cherry, prickly pear, ginkgo biloba, willow, and ginger root extracts seemed to lessen certain hangover symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"is-there-a-recommended-amount-of-rest-needed-to-effectively-get-rid-of-a-hangover-headache\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a recommended amount of rest needed to effectively get rid of a hangover headache?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone has a hangover, their body needs to recover their normal energy levels, says Dr. Ormond. \u201cIf possible, take it easy and get some extra sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of rest can matter as well. He recommends staying in \u201ca dark, quiet room until the headache subsides.\u201d Dr. Ormond says staying upright can help since lying flat can make headache symptoms worse. \u201cApplying a cold compress to your forehead can help constrict blood vessels and reduce inflammation, potentially alleviating the headache,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-can-i-take-for-a-headache-after-drinking-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take for a headache after drinking alcohol?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every doctor agrees on any universal hangover headache cure, but they have some suggestions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Nagori says alcohol hangover headache sufferers may want to take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen (Advil)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen (Tylenol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIbuprofen will treat inflammation without wreaking havoc on your liver.\u201d If you have a history of severe gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) or a previous gastrointestinal bleed, then consider only taking acetaminophen. If you have a history of liver dysfunction, consider only taking ibuprofen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also one of a class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) that may help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These pain relievers can also reduce the inflammation that contributes to hangover headaches, Dr. Ormond says. \u201cRemember, everyone&#8217;s body is different, and what works for one person might not work for another.\u201d The fact is there is no one best way to treat a hangover headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/over-the-counter-painkillers-with-alcohol\/\"><b>Is it safe to take over-the-counter painkillers with alcohol?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"preventing-hangover-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing hangover headaches<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only way to prevent a headache after drinking alcohol is to avoid drinking altogether. Other than that, there are no proven hangover remedies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone wants to consume alcohol without getting a headache, it\u2019s a good idea not to drink too much alcohol. Consider drinking on a full stomach, drinking plenty of water between alcoholic beverages to reduce dehydration, alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and drinking one alcoholic drink or less per hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smaller people and people who do not routinely drink alcohol should also keep in mind that alcohol generally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002041.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affects them more strongly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than it does bigger people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/headaches.org\/prevention-and-treatment-for-hangover-headaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Headache Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also recommends the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink mixed drinks with fruit or vegetable juices. The fructose in these juices helps restore the body\u2019s chemical balance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take two tablespoons of honey before drinking. As a result, alcohol consumption can lead to mild dehydration, which can contribute to headaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"acetaldehyde\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetaldehyde<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol metabolism, primarily by the liver, creates the compound acetaldehyde, a toxic short-lived byproduct that contributes to inflammation in vital organs, including the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vasodilation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasodilation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol also contains a chemical called ethanol, which is a vasodilator that enlarges blood vessels. \u201cThis vasodilation can cause headaches in many people, especially those who are already migraine patients,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/praveen-guntipalli-a6975011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Praveen Guntipalli, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the owner and medical director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sanjivamedspa.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjiva Medical Spa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Dallas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"wine-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wine headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Guntipalli noted that red wine also contains histamines, which can cause vascular headaches, and this might make a hangover headache worse. The scientific evidence suggests that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/hangovers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amount of alcohol consumed is the key factor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in how bad a hangover headache is and not the color or the order of alcoholic drinks ingested.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are also substances called congeners, which are produced during fermentation, that could make hangover headaches worse. Congeners contribute to the taste and smell of alcoholic beverages. Darker beverages such as whiskey may have more cogeners than vodka or gin and potentially result in worse hangovers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-if-your-headache-won-t-go-away\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if your headache won\u2019t go away<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hangovers aren\u2019t just unpleasant, they can be dangerous. They can impair one\u2019s attention, coordination, and decision-making ability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to remember that alcohol increases the risk of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels.
