What is blepharitis? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/blepharitis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A condition where your eyelids and eyelid margins become inflamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition is usually chronic, meaning that it tends to recur. It&rsquo;s treatable, though, with at-home remedies and medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although having blepharitis can be irritating and uncomfortable, it rarely leads to serious complications, especially if you treat the condition promptly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-blepharitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes blepharitis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The causes of blepharitis depend on which type of blepharitis you have,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trytwentytwenty.com\/pages\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diane Hilal-Campo, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ophthalmologist and founder of Twenty\/Twenty Beauty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoa.org\/healthy-eyes\/eye-and-vision-conditions\/blepharitis?sso=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Optometric Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are two main types of blepharitis: anterior and posterior:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anterior blepharitis affects the area of your eyes where your eyelashes are located (eyelid margins).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posterior blepharitis affects the part of the eyelid that touches your eyeball.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The causes of blepharitis depend on which type of blepharitis you have,&rdquo; says Dr. Hilal-Campo. &ldquo;For example, anterior blepharitis is usually caused by bacterial overgrowth and seborrheic blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), whereas posterior blepharitis is usually caused by clogging of the meibomian glands.&rdquo; Those are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/anatomy\/meibomian-glands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oil glands along the eyelids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the eyelashes are located.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bacterial-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial infection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common infectious cause of blepharitis is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459305\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overgrowth of staphylococcal bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but infection with Herpes simplex and Varicella zoster may also occur. &ldquo;Bacteria produce toxins,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which leads to eyelid inflammation,&rdquo; explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylaservision.com\/about\/dr-giyaur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Giyaur, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ophthalmologist and founding director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylaservision.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Laser Vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seborrheic-dermatitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seborrheic dermatitis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with anterior blepharitis often have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/seborrheic-dermatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seborrheic dermatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;Just like any other skin, eyelids can be affected by seborrhea, a common skin condition that affects skin&#8217;s oil-producing sebaceous glands, leading to oily, flaky skin,&rdquo; Dr. Giyaur says. The condition is similar to dandruff on the scalp, where flakes accumulate on your eyelashes and cause irritation, she describes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"allergic-reactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common cause of blepharitis is an allergic reaction, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.midwestern.edu\/academics\/our-faculty\/parres-wright-od-faao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parres Wright, OD, FAAO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, optometrist and full-time associate professor at Midwestern University-Chicago College of Optometry. &ldquo;These types of reactions to substances like makeup, contact lens solutions, or airborne allergens cause redness, swelling, and flaking of skin on the eyelids,&rdquo; says Dr. Wright. If you are having blepharitis symptoms after using certain items, you should avoid them going forward, Dr. Wright recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"meibomian-gland-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meibomian gland dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meibomian glands are responsible for secreting oil to prevent dry eyes and tear evaporation. When they become dysfunctional and get blocked, they stop releasing oil, causing irritation. &ldquo;This leads to increased evaporation, dry eye, and irritation because of lack of eye lubrication,&rdquo; Dr. Giyaur says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"demodex-mites\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demodex mites<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anterior and posterior blepharitis can both be caused by Demodex mites. These cases are called Demodex blepharitis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Demodex are tiny mites that can infect the eyelids,&rdquo; says Dr. Giyaur. &ldquo;The mites live in the follicles at the base of the eyelashes and cause inflammation, which leads to blepharitis and lash loss.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s not entirely clear the role that these mites play in the development of blepharitis because people with and without symptoms seem to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/092865805910057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demodex mites at equal rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of blepharitis vary from person to person. Additionally, they depend on the type of blepharitis and how well-controlled it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/blepharitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Eye Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common symptoms of blepharitis are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen eyes or eyelids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessively watery eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sensation that there&rsquo;s a foreign object in your eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eye-itch-relief\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy eyes<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light sensitivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual tearing that may be described as foamy or containing tiny bubbles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased crust or flakes on your eyelids when you wake up in the morning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;It&rsquo;s also possible to lose your eyelashes if you have blepharitis,&rdquo; says Dr. Giyaur. &ldquo;This typically occurs late in the progress of the disease and is irreversible.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s caused by &ldquo;persistent inflammation of the eyelids, which leads to permanent loss of eyelash follicles,&rdquo; Dr. Giyaur explains.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"complications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, blepharitis isn&rsquo;t serious and rarely causes complications like vision loss. &ldquo;Still, it can cause other uncomfortable side effects,&rdquo; says Dr. Giyaur.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"styes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Styes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common complications of blepharitis is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/stye-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">styes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are small, tender red bumps that appear on your eyelid. They, too, can be located on the anterior or posterior aspect of the lid. &ldquo;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/stye-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Styes occur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a result of the inflammation of blocked oil glands, leading to the development of a painful lump on the eyelids,&rdquo; Dr. Wright explains.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"chalazions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chalazions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A chalazion is another type of lump on your eye, but it&rsquo;s less <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eye-pain-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than a stye and typically harder, according to the National Eye Institute. Chalazions are also caused by blockages in your oil gland and often occur when you have a stye that doesn&rsquo;t resolve. Thankfully, chalazions usually go away on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pink-eye-conjunctivitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink eye (conjunctivitis)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Common complications of blepharitis include blepharoconjunctivitis, which mimics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pink-eye-vs-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pink eye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but is treated differently,&rdquo; explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yuna-rapoport-a3653a94\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yuna Rapoport, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ophthalmologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattaneyenyc.com\/lasik\/laser-corrective-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhattan Eye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK558902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Treatments for blepharoconjunctivitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are usually the same as general blepharitis treatment, including keeping the eye area clean and using medication typically prescribed for blepharitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dry-eyes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry eyes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the National Eye Institute, blepharitis is a frequent trigger for dry eyes since blepharitis causes oil and crust to block your tear ducts. &ldquo;Patients with posterior blepharitis affecting the meibomian glands can get severe and painful dry eyes, which can also affect vision,&rdquo; Dr Hilal-Campo explains. Blepharitis can also cause your eyes to feel more watery because your tears aren&rsquo;t functioning normally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"corneal-ulcers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corneal ulcers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Though less common, the most serious complication of blepharitis is corneal ulcers,&rdquo; says Dr. Rapoport. &ldquo;These are sterile marginal ulcers, meaning they are not infectious, but when there is an epithelial defect (the top layer is eroded from the corneal surface), this invites bacteria in to create an overlying infection. When not treated, corneal ulcers can lead to permanent scarring and vision loss,&rdquo; Dr. Rapoport warns.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Optometric Society, most cases of blepharitis are diagnosed during a routine eye exam. But you should visit your optometrist or ophthalmologist if you experience any blepharitis symptoms (e.g., redness, crusting, burning, and itching) for the first time or if your current symptoms aren&rsquo;t improving after adopting an eyelid hygiene routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, blepharitis can be diagnosed on sight, without additional testing. Your provider may also ask you questions about the nature of your symptoms, including when they started, how they progressed, and if you are experiencing any other health-related issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main treatment for blepharitis involves keeping the eye and eyelid area clean so bacteria don&rsquo;t proliferate, and this is something you&rsquo;ll need to do on a long-term basis. &ldquo;Because blepharitis is a chronic disease, eyelid hygiene continues after an acute exacerbation to prevent recurrence of symptoms,&rdquo; explains Dr. Hilal-Campo. In some cases, especially if blepharitis complications emerge, medication may also be necessary to manage the condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"blepharitis-self-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blepharitis self-care<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning debris from your eyes and practicing eye hygiene on a regular basis is the mainstay of blepharitis treatment. This may involve:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply warm compresses to the eyelids to soften eye crust and loosen oil from the gland, improving meibomian gland function.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lid scrubs are gentle cleansers used to remove bacteria and debris from your eyelids and lashes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/what-is-blepharitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends washing your eyelashes with diluted baby shampoo on a daily basis. It also suggests washing your eyebrows, along with your hair and scalp, with antibacterial shampoo as a way to combat blepharitis. The AAO also mentions fish oil supplements, which are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids that might help combat blepharitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"blepharitis-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blepharitis medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, medication may be required for blepharitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the National Library of Medicine explains, both topical (applied to skin) and oral antibiotics can be used. Topical blepharitis antibiotic creams such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bacitracin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacitracin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/erythromycin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erythromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be prescribed for acute cases of blepharitis and anterior blepharitis. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrolide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotics or oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tetracyclines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tetracyclines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be prescribed for posterior blepharitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cases of severe blepharitis, a healthcare provider may prescribe a topical corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory) or immunosuppressant as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blepharitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blepharitis treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both reduce inflammation and swelling. Examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lotemax?utm_medium=paid-search&amp;utm_source=google-sc&amp;utm_campaign=8494876986&amp;utm_adgroup=90359556630&amp;utm_term=lotemax%20eye%20drops&amp;utm_content=405201346241&amp;matchtype=b&amp;pos=&amp;device=c&amp;mkwid=s%7Cdc_pcrid_405201346241_pkw_lotemax%20eye%20drops_pmt_b&amp;segments=&amp;gad=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw1OmoBhDXARIsAAAYGSF4ULyv_-pbfRoY5eDjSTvQGn7ZHFkp-w3lZt0vPDtYsQrkV77K8OkaAtYBEALw_wcB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loteprednol etabonate<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blephamide, which contains a steroid as well as an antibiotic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclosporine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclosporine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tacrolimus\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tacrolimus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are immunosuppressants<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, eye drops like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/systane-complete\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Systane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help alleviate some of the symptoms of dryness and discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Wright shares the following tips to prevent blepharitis&mdash;or at least minimize its recurrence:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice good eyelid hygiene, which involves regularly cleaning your eyelids and lashes to remove make-up, lid debris, and excess oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid wearing make-up when your blepharitis is flaring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always remove contact lenses when sleeping.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage conditions that may exacerbate blepharitis, such as seborrheic dermatitis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;While not all cases of blepharitis can be prevented, practicing proper lid hygiene is essential,&rdquo; says Dr. Giyaur. In many cases, it will help delay or prevent the onset of blepharitis. Don&rsquo;t hesitate to consult a healthcare provider at the first sign of symptoms.
