These small skin growths known as acrochordons are like tiny flaps of skin that don\u2019t belong. At first glance, you may fear it\u2019s a symptom of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/psoriasis-vs-eczema\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psoriasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eczema-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, HPV warts, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/skin-cancer-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014but skin tags are common, noncancerous, and essentially harmless. In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/dw\/dw-insights-and-inquiries\/archive\/2022\/tag-youre-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% of American adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience skin tags at some point in their lives. They affect people of all genders and races.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSkin tags are benign growths that love areas where there&#8217;s lots of friction,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantadermsurgery.com\/about\/dr-mary-alice-mina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Alice Mina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dermatologist in Atlanta and host of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theskinreal.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Skin Real<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d podcast. \u201cWe often see them around the neck, under the breasts, and along the groin and armpits. We don&#8217;t fully understand why some people get more than others, but they&#8217;re fairly universal as we age.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to age and parts of the body, certain health conditions can be a contributing factor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people are genetically predisposed,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sutterhealth.org\/find-doctor\/dr-faranak-kamangar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faranak Kamangar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a Silicon Valley-based dermatologist, who adds that obesity, diabetes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20464083\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pregnancy make someone more likely to have skin tags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While skin tags don\u2019t cause harm, many people want to get rid of them for cosmetic reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"13-home-remedies-for-skin-tags\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 home remedies for skin tags<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a skin tag pops up out of nowhere, it may be tempting to try to remove it on your own. They aren\u2019t a medical issue\u2014and don\u2019t actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be removed\u2014but healthcare providers do recommend you have a professional remove them rather than trying to DIY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re determined to do it yourself, there are options that could work, but there are risks. Read on to see what experts say about the following 13 home remedies for skin tags.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-cut-it-off\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Cut it off<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you find a skin tag, it can be tempting to snip it off with scissors. In fact, you can go down a lengthy Reddit rabbit hole about things people have used to cut off their skin tags at home\u2014nail clippers, tweezers, hair scissors\u2014you name it. But just because you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cut off a skin tag at home doesn\u2019t mean you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don&#8217;t recommend people cut things off their skin by themselves at home,\u201d Dr. Mina says. Your scissors are likely not sterile or sharp enough. Plus, Dr. Mina explains that skin tags often have a central blood supply. If you cut it off, it could bleed and leave an open wound that\u2019s vulnerable to infection and scarring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-tie-it-off\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Tie it off<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A popular skin tag removal method is tying them off. The idea is that you tie a piece of string around the stalk of the skin tag tightly and leave it there until the skin tag falls off. Will it work? Probably, says Dr. Mina. Is it a good idea? Probably not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a skin tag is big enough that you can tie a string around it with relative ease, you should probably have your healthcare provider look at it. \u201cYou want to make sure it&#8217;s not actually a mole or something else\u2026 like neurofibromas, which can resemble skin tags,\u201d Dr. Mina says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When getting a concerning-looking skin tag removed in a healthcare setting, your provider will send it to the lab for a pathologist to look at it under the microscope to confirm it\u2019s not cancer\u2014something you can\u2019t do at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-use-a-cryotherapy-kit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Use a cryotherapy kit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several brands make at-home cryotherapy kits that claim they\u2019ll get rid of skin tags\u2014which is similar to a procedure that\u2019s done in a dermatologist&#8217;s office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe use liquid nitrogen to freeze skin tags,\u201d Dr. Mina says. \u201cYou really need about negative 25 degrees Celsius to remove these benign skin lesions.\u201d The over-the-counter (OTC) kits, which you can purchase at the drugstore, might not get cold enough to effectively remove skin tags\u2014plus, this method has the potential to scar or discolor the skin around the skin tag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s really difficult to limit the freezing to the skin tag alone,\u201d Dr. Mina says. \u201cYou can actually destroy the little melanocytes in the skin and leave people with white marks on the skin.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-apply-removal-cream\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Apply removal cream<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the cryotherapy kits, there are OTC creams on the market that claim to remove skin tags. Some use chemicals, such as salicylic acid, and some use natural ingredients like essential oils. There\u2019s no research indicating that they might be effective, and they likely haven\u2019t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evidence that some of these creams may be dangerous, though. In a study from 2023, researchers found 38 cases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36743972\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious skin conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that likely resulted from skin tag removal creams bought online. In other words, use them with caution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-try-patches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Try patches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin tag removal patches are generally small, adhesive patches that contain salicylic acid or essential oils. The problem, again, is that most skin tag removal patches are larger than the skin tag so the active ingredients that remove the skin tag will also affect the surrounding skin. As of this writing, none of the skin tag removal patches available over the counter have been approved by the FDA, and they have issued a statement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/products-marketed-removing-moles-and-other-skin-lesions-can-cause-injuries-scarring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warning consumers against using<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these patches. They can cause skin irritation or other skin conditions such as dermatitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-soak-with-apple-cider-vinegar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Soak with apple cider vinegar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea behind using apple cider vinegar to remove skin tags is that the acidity of the vinegar will irritate the skin tag into falling off. To do this, you\u2019re meant to apply a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar to your skin tag and then cover it with a bandage. You should leave for a few days or until the skin tag falls off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no research supporting this method and it\u2019s possible the ACV could cause contact dermatitis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/apple-cider-vinegar\/\"><b>Health benefits of apple cider vinegar<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-cover-in-nail-polish\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Cover in nail polish<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One alleged natural remedy for removing skin tags is using nail polish. You are meant to coat the skin tag in nail polish, wait for the polish to harden, and then pull it off. There is no evidence that this is a safe or effective method\u2014but there is a risk of bleeding or scarring if you rip the skin tag off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-soak-with-nail-polish-remover\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Soak with nail polish remover<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people believe nail polish will help a skin tag fall off. Similar to ACV, they say to apply a cotton ball soaked with nail polish remover to the area and cover with a Band-Aid; it\u2019s meant to be done daily until the skin tag falls off. However, this is not advised as the active ingredient in nail polish remover is acetone, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/ToxProfiles\/tp21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which can be toxic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when applied directly to the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-apply-raw-garlic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Apply raw garlic<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the internet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/garlic-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garlic is great for just about everything<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including skin tag removal. Some sources say that if you cut a clove of garlic, press it to the skin tag, and then cover it with a Band-Aid, the skin tag will fall right off. Sounds like magic, right? Try a banana peel<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using banana peels to heal skin tags seems to be one of the gentlest home remedies. Similar to the other treatments, you are meant to apply a piece of banana peel to the skin tag and cover it with a bandage nightly until the tag falls off. Unfortunately, doctors have no reason to believe this method will do anything to skin tags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re better off just eating the banana and getting the nutrients from that,\u201d Dr. Mina says, adding that this DIY attempt won\u2019t hurt you, so if you want to give it a go, it\u2019s low risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"11-treat-with-tea-tree-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. Treat with tea tree oil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tea-tree-oil\">tea tree oil<\/a> to skin tags is another natural approach to removing them. With a lot of home remedies, you&#8217;re trying to irritate the skin to exfoliate or rub them off. In other words, you&#8217;re trying to traumatize the skin to get them to fall off, Dr. Mina explains. \u201cI&#8217;m not sure how tea tree oil would work,\u201d she says, given that tea tree oil has been shown to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/ToxProfiles\/tp21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good news is that it isn\u2019t likely to hurt your skin or the surrounding skin. The bad news is that putting tea tree oil on skin tags probably just won\u2019t do anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"12-apply-vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12. Apply vitamin E<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The logic behind putting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-e\">vitamin E<\/a> on skin tags is a bit confusing. Some people claim that vitamin E will soften aging skin and therefore reduce skin tags and others say it will dry them up. In any case, applying vitamin E to skin tags is not a clinically proven removal strategy, but it\u2019s also not likely to hurt you. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-vitamin-e\/art-20364144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin E can be toxic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for some people, that\u2019s only when it\u2019s taken orally as a supplement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"13-use-iodine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13. Use iodine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another treatment for skin tags involves applying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/iodine-tincture\">iodine<\/a> to them daily until they drop off. Unfortunately, this method isn\u2019t just ineffective\u2014it can also be harmful. Iodine side effects are rare but possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-skin-tags-when-natural-remedies-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat skin tags when natural remedies don\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If home remedies don\u2019t work and you still want to remove your skin tags, it\u2019s time to see your healthcare provider. When you go to your family healthcare provider or dermatologist, the treatment will depend on the size of the skin tag and any other conditions you may have. Dr. Mina says she generally uses excision (cuts them off) and then sends the skin tag to a lab to be tested. Some providers will use cryotherapy\u2014freezing them off with liquid nitrogen\u2014but some dermatologists avoid cryotherapy due to the potential for scarring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other healthcare providers may use hyfrecation, which burns them off with electrical energy, or ligation, which is a method of strangulating the blood vessel with a suture. All of these methods are safe and effective in a clinical environment. If the area is bleeding after skin tag removal, healthcare providers will cauterize the area to stop the bleeding. Some healthcare providers use injected anesthesia at the base of the skin tag. Complications are rare during and after these minor procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-skin-tags\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for skin tags<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, skin tags aren\u2019t a problem. That being said if you suddenly have a lot of skin tags, you should have them examined by a medical professional. \u201cThere are some conditions where people are covered in skin tags,\u201d Dr. Mina says. \u201cIt&#8217;s not so much that the skin tags are a problem. They just may help us identify an underlying skin condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are getting skin tags all of a sudden, it could be related to weight gain or hormonal issues. Pregnant women often get skin tags, although researchers aren\u2019t exactly sure why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other factor to consider is size. What you think is a skin tag could be a mole or something else that needs investigating. Dr. Mina recommends seeing a provider if you have a skin tag that is more than a centimeter to verify it\u2019s benign.
