About<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK525997\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% to 15%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of sore throats in adults and 20% to 30% of sore throats in kids are caused by a strep infection, which is caused by group A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">streptococcus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or your child has strep throat, you may rush to the doctor to request an antibiotic\u2014but do you actually need <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat strep? Are natural treatments for strep throat just as good as a prescription? The short answer is no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here we speak with healthcare providers about when medication is needed, some natural ways to soothe your symptoms, and what to know about the risks of antibiotics for strep throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-get-over-strep-throat-without-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you get over strep throat without antibiotics?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can definitely recover from strep throat without antibiotics,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/children\/doctors\/17153\/marc-grella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc J. Grella, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pediatrician at Massachusetts General Hospital. Typically, recovery occurs about eight to 10 days after the symptoms of strep throat\u2014sore throat, fever, headache\u2014first appear. \u201cIn fact, most people who get strep throat probably never find out they have it because the pain goes away and they move on,\u201d Dr. Grella says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that for a small number of people, untreated episodes of strep throat can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/groupastrep\/diseases-public\/strep-throat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abscesses that form in the tonsils<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen lymph nodes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-ear-infection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear infections<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (a kidney disease) that can lead to kidney failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarlet fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rheumatic fever, which can affect your heart, skin, brain, and joints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/groupastrep\/diseases-public\/streptococcal-toxic-shock-syndrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These infections occur when the strep bacteria migrates to other parts of your body. Antibiotics treat Group A strep and markedly decrease the risk of complications. While complications are rare, these conditions can be serious. For example, rheumatic fever \u201cis a severe and life-threatening heart condition, which can lead to lifelong disability or death,\u201d Dr. Grella explains. Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, when the infection spreads to your body\u2019s tissues, can result in hospitalization, and usually requires ICU-level care, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/marc-kai-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc Kai, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary care provider with Mercy Family Care Physicians in Baltimore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe right antibiotics effectively kill the strep bacteria (GABS, or group A beta-hemolytic strep) and very effectively prevent rheumatic fever,\u201d Dr. Grella says. The same goes for other complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most strep infections go away on their own, most healthcare providers prescribe antibiotics to help decrease the chance of serious complications. Using antibiotics can also reduce the number of days that you are sick so that you can get back to work and other activities sooner without worrying about spreading strep to others, explains Dr. Kai. Antibiotics also decrease the amount of time that you are contagious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"strep-throat-treatment-without-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strep throat treatment without antibiotics\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no natural method that can protect you from complications from strep. \u201cAntibiotics are really the best and only effective medicine for avoiding complications, as the infection is caused by a bacteria and there aren\u2019t really any natural remedies for this type of throat infection,\u201d Dr. Kai says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, there are some natural ways to relieve some of your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sore-throat-no-other-symptoms-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms until you recover.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"natural-remedies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Kai and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepadvisor.org\/dr-rajkumar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a board-certified physician in pulmonology, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you can minimize the discomfort from a sore throat with home remedies and dietary changes by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating cool or cold foods, like popsicles to numb the throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swallowing a spoonful of honey<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking purees or smoothies to avoid irritation from hard or crunchy foods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying well-hydrated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gargling with saltwater<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding irritants <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as smoke, pollution, and common allergens<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vicks-cool-mist-humidifier\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humidifier<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it won\u2019t help your throat, getting plenty of rest can help you bounce back from an infection more quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"over-the-counter-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your sore throat is causing a lot of pain, try throat lozenges from the pharmacy or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-otc-anti-inflammatory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OTC) pain relievers. \u201cIf you don\u2019t mind taking additional medicines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also effective at reducing pain so you can keep giving your body the energy and hydration through food and drink that it needs to recover,\u201d Dr. Kai says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-know-when-antibiotics-are-necessary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to know when antibiotics are necessary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to figure out if antibiotics are necessary is to see a healthcare professional for an exam and a strep test. You should visit your provider if you have any of the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe sore throat pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty swallowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/swollen-lymph-node-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen lymph nodes<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red spots on the roof of your mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow or white patches on the back of the throat or on your tonsils<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these signs of strep throat are not enough for a diagnosis, it\u2019s a good indicator you should be seen by a professional for a throat swab or rapid strep test. Getting a strep throat culture helps confirm if your sore throat is caused by strep, which is a bacterial infection.\u00a0 If it is negative, chances are your symptoms are from a virus like the common cold. Sore throats caused by viruses do not require antibiotics because antibiotics do not treat viruses, only bacteria. If your throat swab comes back positive for Group A strep, then have a discussion with your healthcare provider about whether antibiotics are appropriate for your situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/penicillins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the two main antibiotics used to treat strep throat, according to the National Library of Medicine. One of the common causes of antibiotic resistance is the overprescription of antibiotics, such as when people are prescribed antibiotics for a viral infection like the common cold or flu. However, these days healthcare providers tend to weigh the risk of antibiotic use more carefully than in the past. Most physicians would agree that the risks of antibiotic resistance are small and antibiotics should be given for strep-positive sore throat.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should also only take antibiotics when they are necessary and prescribed by a healthcare professional,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta says. When they are prescribed, be sure to use antibiotics as directed\u2014finish the complete prescription, even if you start to feel better before the course is finished.
