Being pregnant doesn&rsquo;t make you immune from allergies&mdash;and, in some cases, many find that their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/medblog\/allergies-asthma-during-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms actually get worse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during pregnancy. So it&rsquo;s understandable to wonder if you can take Zyrtec while expecting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s what you need to know about the safety of Zyrtec during pregnancy, along with other pregnancy-safe alternatives for treating allergy symptoms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-zyrtec-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Zyrtec while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered safe to take during all three trimesters of pregnancy, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hpvhub.com\/doctor\/monte-swarup-m-d-facog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monte Swarup, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN based in Arizona and founder of HPV Hub. There have been numerous studies showing no link to birth defects with antihistamines taken during pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2014\/1015\/p548.html#afp20141015p548-b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of studies released by the American Academy of Family Physicians <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(AAFP), at least four studies on Zyrtec during pregnancy have shown no evidence of increased risk to a developing fetus. Zyrtec is part of the second generation of over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines along with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (loratadine) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fexofenadine), which the AAFP says have all been shown to be relatively safe for use during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Zyrtec has been shown to be safe, Dr. Swarup says you should still take it only when necessary. In other words, limit your Zyrtec use to those times when you are experiencing symptoms of hay fever or are going to be near something you&rsquo;re allergic to, like cats or certain trees. You should also take the lowest effective dose (usually 10 milligrams).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-risks-of-taking-zyrtec-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the risks of taking Zyrtec while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) used to rely heavily on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chemm.hhs.gov\/pregnancycategories.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter-based rating system for drug safety during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with category A drugs being the safest to take, category X drugs being contraindicated because the risks outweigh the benefits, and category B, C, and D drugs varying in safety and adverse effects.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA is beginning to move away from that rating system, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/medical-advisory-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alyssa Dweck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an OB-GYN and medical adviser for INTIMINA. Zyrtec has always been a category B drug, which means it&rsquo;s been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK507858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proven safe in animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not enough adequate or well-controlled studies have been performed in humans for it to be a category A drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Swarup, there are no known risks for the fetus when a pregnant woman is taking Zyrtec, and the only potential risk for her is drowsiness. Drowsiness is a common side effect of many antihistamines, though it tends to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1110863015000452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less common among second-generation antihistamines like Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-i-take-instead-of-zyrtec-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take instead of Zyrtec during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need an antihistamine and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cetirizine-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can&rsquo;t take Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are thankfully several other types of allergy medications that are considered safe for pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin and Allegra, two other second-generation oral antihistamines, are the most obvious swaps, but if you prefer to stick with first-generation antihistamines, Dr. Dweck says OTCs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chlorpheniramine-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorpheniramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ryclora\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dexchlorpheniramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and prescription <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydroxyzine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydroxyzine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also safe, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/experts-and-stories\/ask-acog\/what-medicine-can-i-take-for-allergies-while-im-pregnant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">per the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, you should avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diphenhydramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) during pregnancy as it crosses the placenta and can have significant fetal effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re hoping to avoid oral antihistamines altogether, there are also alternative types of allergy medicines that can help treat and relieve allergic rhinitis symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Swarup, this includes intranasal steroid spray <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluticasone-propionate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluticasone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is available over the counter) and nasal saline rinses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several other OTC intranasal steroid sprays, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasonex\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasonex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mometasone-furoate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mometasone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rhinocort-vs-flonase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhinocort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/budesonide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">budesonide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), have also been shown to be safe for use during pregnancy, per a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29164323\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, it is best practice to speak with your healthcare provider before starting any new medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"natural-remedies-for-allergies-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies for allergies during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some pregnant women would prefer not to take any medication unless they have no other choice. If you&rsquo;re on the hunt for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/seasonal-allergies-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-pharmaceutical ways to treat your allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during pregnancy, there are a few strategies you can try.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Find your triggers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Dweck says one of the best ways to relieve allergy symptoms is by identifying and avoiding common allergens like pollen and dust, or&mdash;better yet&mdash;figuring out what exactly you&rsquo;re allergic to and taking steps to steer clear as much as possible. This might mean noting when your symptoms are the worst and doing a little detective work to figure out why and how to combat it (like putting dust mite covers on your bedding if your symptoms are worse after sleeping).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergy proof your home. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminate rugs and excess pillows (and carpet if possible), avoid scented candles, diffusers, and cleaners, and use allergy covers on pillows and mattresses. Clean your home weekly with wet cloths, a vacuum, and a mop and be sure to wash curtains and blinds. Use a high quality mask while cleaning. Do not allow pets to sleep on beds or furniture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Using saline nasal sprays.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/medblog\/pregnancy-stuffy-nose-rhinitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irrigating your nasal passages with a saline solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the safest ways to relieve allergy symptoms during pregnancy. You can use either a saline squeeze bottle, a sinus rinse bottle, or a neti pot, but be sure to always use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/rinsing-your-sinuses-neti-pots-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distilled or boiled and cooled water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/saline-sinus-rinse-recipe#:~:text=Saline%20Rinse%20Recipe&amp;text=In%20a%20clean%20container%2C%20mix,lukewarm%20distilled%20or%20boiled%20water.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saline solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to eliminate the risk of water-borne parasites. Always use warm water to avoid vertigo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Trying immunotherapy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Swarup says sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/allergy-treatments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy treatments given under the tongue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a potential option for treating allergies during pregnancy. Previously, the recommendation was to avoid beginning this type of allergy treatment during pregnancy (though women already utilizing it when they got pregnant could safely continue), but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4641390\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newer research suggests that it&rsquo;s likely also safe to begin SLIT during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Getting acupuncture.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Swarup also notes that acupuncture has been studied for the treatment of allergies, though the evidence is inconclusive. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4479426\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> summarizes this uncertainty, noting that some studies suggest it can help while others have been unable to confirm a link. In general, though, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4112450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acupuncture is considered safe during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as long as it&#8217;s performed correctly by a licensed acupuncturist.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Using a humidifier.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Humidifiers add extra water to the air, which can keep your sinuses from feeling dried out and stuffy. This can be especially helpful to do overnight, while you sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use an air purifier <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to filter out dust, pollen, and micro allergens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercising regularly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some studies have suggested that moderate physical activity can have protective effects against seasonal allergies and asthma like this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6603979\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study showing that winter exercise reduced allergic airway inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use an air conditioner and change the filter regularly. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On warm days, it is beneficial to use an air conditioner instead of having windows open to reduce allergens indoors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Making dietary changes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is some research that foods like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2020.599080\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local honey can help relieve allergy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as some research suggesting that supplements like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/isrn\/2013\/938751\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stinging nettle and butterbur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be beneficial.
