Sugary foods and drinks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/our-team\/jared-braunstein-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jared Braunstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, an internist with Medical Offices of Manhattan and contributor to LabFinder, says he advises patients not to eat high-sugar foods and drinks while taking Ozempic for two reasons: It can cause nausea and vomiting, and it can also contribute to weight gain, which can lead to diabetes complications for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/professionals\/diabetes-discoveries-practice\/achieving-type-2-diabetes-remission-through-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, though, that sugar doesn\u2019t only come from cakes, cookies, candy, and sweetened beverages like soda and juice. Items like breakfast cereals, white bread, white rice, and regular pasta are simple carbohydrates, which means they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/carbohydrates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broken down very quickly into sugar and cause your blood glucose to spike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as opposed to complex carbohydrates, which take longer and offer a slower, smoother rise in glucose).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re tracking your carb intake each day, Dr. Braunstein recommends consuming no more than 50 to 60 grams of carbs per meal and no more than 15 to 20 grams of carbs per snack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-processed-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Processed foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, all the experts agreed that processed foods should be limited or, better yet, eliminated when taking Ozempic. Frozen prepared meals, packaged crackers and snack bars, bottled salad dressings, canned pasta sauces, and many other processed foods tend to contain higher-than-necessary amounts of sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only can these types of foods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/care\/article\/46\/7\/1335\/148548\/Ultra-Processed-Food-Consumption-and-Risk-of-Type\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but they can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/diabeticdiet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exacerbate diabetes symptoms and side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people already diagnosed with the condition. As much as possible, make a weekly meal plan and prepare your foods yourself at home with nutritious, whole ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-cruciferous-vegetables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Cruciferous vegetables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, vegetables are good for you, but some types of vegetables, especially the cruciferous, gas-producing kinds, can aggravate any GI side effects you may be having.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVegetables like asparagus, Brussels sprouts, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage can cause excessive gas and bloating while taking Ozempic,\u201d Dr. Braunstein says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean you have to eliminate them, but like so many other foods, moderation is key; if you have broccoli with lunch, maybe opt for a less-cruciferous vegetable with dinner. (Of course, if any of these specific foods cause you distress, it\u2019s okay to cut them out while you\u2019re taking Ozempic.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s no drug-alcohol interaction between alcohol and Ozempic, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can intensify side effects by impacting liver function and blood sugar levels. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2022\/209637Orig1s009lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 4% of individuals taking Ozempic experienced hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
