For example, the medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zestoretic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zestoretic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a combination pill containing lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a diuretic. Or, some individuals may take lisinopril along with a separate diuretic pill (as two separate pills). In these cases, additional blood pressure-lowering effects are needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, people who already take a diuretic and then start taking lisinopril may have an excessive lowering of blood pressure, causing blood pressure to become too low. Too much potassium can lead to a heart attack, so if any of these symptoms arise, call 911 for emergency medical help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who take both lisinopril and a diuretic will require regular monitoring of their potassium levels and blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insulin-and-sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin and sulfonylureas<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who use insulin for diabetes or take oral diabetes medication in the sulfonylurea drug class should consult their healthcare provider about a potential lisinopril interaction. The combination could cause an increased blood sugar-lowering effect, resulting in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (low blood sugar). Healthcare providers will weigh the benefits and risks and consider other options that do not contain an NSAID, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-tylenol-an-nsaid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (acetaminophen). If the combination of lisinopril and an NSAID is recommended or prescribed, the patient will be monitored for kidney function. Some examples of NSAIDs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil, Motrin (ibuprofen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve (naproxen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex (celecoxib)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobic (meloxicam)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relafen (nabumetone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voltaren (diclofenac)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"angiotensin-receptor-blockers-arbs-and-aliskiren\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and aliskiren<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/angiotensin-ii-receptor-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angiotensin receptor blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or ARBs, are similar to ACE inhibitors (like lisinopril) in that they both work on a system called the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and lower the effects of a hormone called angiotensin-2 (AT-2). AT-2 narrows blood vessels, causing high blood pressure and potentially kidney damage, as well as worsening heart problems. ACE inhibitors and ARBs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/atoz\/content\/angiotensin-converting-enzyme-ace-inhibitors-angiotensin-receptor-blockers-arbs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work at different parts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. ACE inhibitors decrease the amount of AT-2 your body makes. ARBs work later in the process. Picture a lock and key. AT-2 is the key and needs to fit into the lock (receptor) to raise blood pressure. ARBs block the lock, so AT-2 can\u2019t fit into the lock. By blocking the receptors, AT-2 cannot narrow the blood vessels and increase blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aliskiren-fumarate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aliskiren<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a renin inhibitor that works on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system at an earlier stage than ACE inhibitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining an ACE inhibitor with an ARB or aliskiren can increase the risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-blood-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(low blood pressure), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-potassium-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high potassium levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and kidney problems (including kidney failure). In rare cases, the combination may be prescribed with close monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes. However, in most cases, an ACE inhibitor like lisinopril will not be combined with an ARB or aliskiren. People with diabetes or kidney problems (with a GFR less than 60 mL\/minute) should never take lisinopril with aliskiren.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of ARBs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avapro (irbesartan)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benicar (olmesartan)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cozaar (losartan)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diovan (valsartan)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This list also includes combination drugs that contain an ARB, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avalide (irbesartan\/HCTZ)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benicar HCT (olmesartan\/HCTZ)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diovan HCT (valsartan\/HCTZ)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyzaar (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/losartan-potassium-hctz\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan\/HCTZ)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aliskiren can be found as a generic drug, as well as under the brand name Tekturna.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"entresto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/entresto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sacubitril\/valsartan) is a combination drug classified as a neprilysin inhibitor\/ARB. It\u2019s used by people with heart failure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals who take an ACE inhibitor such as lisinopril should not take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/entresto-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If switching to or from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/entresto\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at least 36 hours should elapse between taking lisinopril and taking Entresto. The combination of lisinopril and Entresto could increase the risk of angioedema, a type of swelling. In this case, angioedema could involve swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, or extremities, which could cause difficulty breathing or swallowing. Some reactions have been life-threatening or fatal. Some individuals have experienced intestinal angioedema.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mtor-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mTOR inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs in a class called mTOR inhibitors have the same type of risk as Entresto. Combining lisinopril with an mTOR inhibitor can increase the risk of angioedema, and the combination should not be given.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of mTOR inhibitors include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afinitor (everolimus), used to treat certain types of cancers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zortress (everolimus), used to prevent kidney or liver transplant rejection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapamune (sirolimus), used to prevent kidney transplant rejection or treat a rare lung condition called lymphangioleiomyomatosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torisel (temsirolimus), used to treat advanced renal cell cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"lithium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium-carbonate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/mood-stabilizers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mood stabilizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/bipolar-1-vs-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Combining lisinopril with lithium could result in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lithium-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toxicity, which is generally reversible after the combination is stopped. Consult a healthcare provider for medical advice if taking lithium. The provider may want to avoid the combination or prescribe the combination but monitor lithium levels closely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lisinopril-interactions-with-food-and-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisinopril interactions with food and supplements<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because lisinopril can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hyperkalemia-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperkalemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s important to discuss potassium intake with a healthcare provider. Potassium supplements, a high-potassium diet, and salt substitutes that contain potassium can all increase potassium levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check with a provider about any suggested dietary changes that may help avoid hyperkalemia, such as avoiding a high-potassium diet and salt substitutes that contain potassium. Follow any other dietary recommendations from your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can affect blood pressure and certain heart conditions. Drinking alcohol with lisinopril can also cause or worsen side effects of this medicine, including dizziness and lightheadedness, which could lead to falls and fainting. If you drink alcohol, check with your healthcare provider before taking lisinopril.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-lisinopril-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other lisinopril interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to drug-drug interactions, there are some other interactions to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lisinopril-and-medical-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisinopril and medical conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisinopril is not safe for everyone. You should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482230\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not take this medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if any of the following apply to you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are allergic to (or have a history of angioedema with) lisinopril, any ACE inhibitor, or any ingredient in the medicine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a history of angioedema<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You take Entresto (sacubitril\/valsartan) or have taken it in the last 36 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You take aliskiren (and you also have diabetes)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have hyperkalemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a history of kidney problems with previous lisinopril use or certain other kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-minimize-lisinopril-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to minimize lisinopril interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although lisinopril has many potential interactions, it can still be taken safely in many cases, with some precautions in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always consult a healthcare provider before beginning a new medicine. Before starting lisinopril, make the provider aware of all medical conditions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/19162-lisinopril-tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially if<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any of the following apply to you:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding should never take lisinopril)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have blood vessel problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a history of angioedema (swelling)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have ever had an allergic reaction to an ACE inhibitor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inform the healthcare provider about any medications you take, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, vitamins, and supplements.
