Low testosterone, also known as &ldquo;low T&rdquo; or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/male-hypogonadism\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male hypogonadism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is the cause of delayed puberty in males. The deficiency can be caused by a genetic disorder of testosterone production by the testes, damage after birth to the testes, or a pituitary gland disorder since the gland produces hormones that stimulate testosterone production by the testes. These conditions can be permanent. A temporary low testosterone level may also result from an underlying inflammatory disease or poor nutrition since the body lacks the energy and resources to support pubertal development.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s a look at the factors associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-testosterone-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low testosterone levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during puberty and how teens can increase their levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"normal-testosterone-levels-during-puberty\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal testosterone levels during puberty<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the normal range of total testosterone for young men can make it easier to detect male hypogonadism and help teens achieve higher testosterone levels. For adolescents assigned male at birth, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15603-low-testosterone-male-hypogonadism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effects of low testosterone before or during puberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowed growth in height with disproportionate arm and leg growth&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced development of pubic hair, penis, and testicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less deepening of the voice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low strength and endurance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because hypogonadism is often associated with older adults, it&rsquo;s not uncommon for teens dealing with low testosterone production to be misdiagnosed. The following measures will not resolve adolescent testosterone deficiency due to congenital abnormal testicular or pituitary function, but they may help an individual with slow pubertal progression:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maintaining a healthy weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Research shows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25982085\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a relationship between obesity and low testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Maintaining a healthy weight throughout childhood and adolescence may help with producing age-appropriate testosterone levels.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Engaging in regular exercise: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that exercise has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7739287\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can cause an increase in testosterone levels in adult men. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adolescents engage in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/physicalactivity\/guidelines.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 minutes or more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Do not overdo it, though, because excessive exercise can actually contribute to delayed puberty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Getting enough sleep:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4445839\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of sleep can affect testosterone levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to a study of the effect of sleep restriction on testosterone levels in young, healthy men. Magnesium has also been used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20352370\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&mdash;especially among athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it seems that dietary supplements may be beneficial in increasing low testosterone, &ldquo;it&#8217;s generally not recommended for teenagers to take supplements to increase testosterone without medical supervision,&rdquo; Dr. Houman says. &ldquo;Unregulated supplements can be risky and may have unpredictable effects on hormonal balance and overall health.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens and their parents or guardians should be weary of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jsm\/article-abstract\/16\/2\/203\/6980564?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone-boosting supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known as &ldquo;T-boosters, &#8221; sold at retailers like Amazon. These supplements have few human studies to prove their effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;It&#8217;s always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using any supplements,&rdquo; Dr. Houman adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medications-for-low-testosterone-during-puberty\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications for low testosterone during puberty<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If necessary, a teen&rsquo;s healthcare provider may recommend testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) medications to treat adolescent low testosterone so pubertal changes can proceed. Medications can be one of the most effective ways to boost testosterone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The age at which TRT can be initiated depends on the individual&#8217;s specific circumstances and should be determined by a specialist,&rdquo; Dr. Houman says. It&rsquo;s advisable to consult the expertise of an endocrinologist&mdash;a doctor specializing in treating health conditions caused by problems with the body&rsquo;s hormones.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of hypogonadism prescription medications approved for pediatric use in the United States: synthetic testosterone injections and implantable pellets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"synthetic-testosterone-injection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthetic testosterone injection&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This testosterone therapy is used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7705876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulate delayed puberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in male teens who don&rsquo;t naturally produce enough testosterone.
