{"id":6185,"date":"2019-10-09T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T13:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=6185"},"modified":"2024-04-24T11:39:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T15:39:20","slug":"adhd-medication-for-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-medication-for-teens\/","title":{"rendered":"The benefits of ADHD medication for teens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 11% of American children ages 4-17 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/news\/2016\/07\/18\/adhd-medication-reduces-risky-behavior-children-teens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnosed with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), almost 70% of them are taking medication to manage their symptoms. Many people think of ADHD as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/for-parents\/managing-medication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">childhood condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but nearly 60% of children with the condition continue to experience symptoms and difficulties into their teens and adulthood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were sure of our decision to put our young son on ADHD medication. But, when he entered adolescence, and his symptoms and the possible dangers were different, we re-evaluated whether to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> him on medication. In the process, here\u2019s what we found.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do ADHD symptoms in teens look like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visible hyperactivity commonly associated with ADHD tends to diminish as kids grow older, which can make it seem like the condition is becoming less severe. But, in adolescence, academic pressures and social expectations increase. This can be especially difficult to manage for adolescents with ADHD who grapple with invisible symptoms, like executive function and working memory deficits. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/article\/adhd-in-teenagers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Child Mind Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outlines the main areas where teens with ADHD often struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens with ADHD often have difficulties with getting organized and staying focused in class or on homework. This can take a toll on their work and their academic success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer relationships<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making and keeping friends can be difficult for teens with ADHD. They may miss social cues, act impulsively, or struggle with appropriate communication. They are more likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/cyberbullying-statistics\/\">to be bullied or to bully<\/a> others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional functioning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor emotion-regulation can make the typical mood swings of adolescence more pronounced in teens with ADHD. They are often easily frustrated and find it difficult to control their emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risky behavior<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens with ADHD are more likely to engage in risky behavior like smoking, drinking, and other substance experimentation or abuse, and having sex (particularly unsafe sex). They often start this behavior earlier than their neurotypical peers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impulsivity and inattention tendencies put teens with ADHD at a higher risk of traffic tickets and accidents, particularly serious accidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is ADHD in teens treated?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appropriate treatment can help ameliorate these risks, and make an already challenging period a little easier for tweens and teens with ADHD. The decision to put my then-7-year-old son on medication after his ADHD diagnosis was not difficult. We had done the research, we knew the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/when-medication-wears-off-adhd-rebound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits of ADHD medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and the potential risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had a lengthy discussion with his pediatrician, and we knew it was the right choice, without hesitation. Within days, we saw positive changes, and within months we had found the optimal dosage of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/concerta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was having a much easier time in school, and most importantly, he felt better. His story is far from unique.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/for-parents\/managing-medication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most effective and reliable way to manage ADHD in adolescence. \u201cThere are several (medications),\u201d says Dr. Joseph Shrand, Lecturer in Psychology at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hms.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Medical School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and founder of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugstorytheater.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug Story Theater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cbut basically two main categories of stimulants: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methylphenidate-hcl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methylphenidates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/concerta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/focalin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc.) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amphetamine-dextroamphetamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphetamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> derivatives (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vyvanse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc.).\u201d These medications calm teens with ADHD, but have a \u201crevving up\u201d effect on people who do not have ADHD. Dr. Shrand mentions that there are other medications that may help, such as the stimulant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dexedrine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dexedrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the non-stimulant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/strattera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strattera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRegular exercise is the most effective non-medicinal treatment for ADHD,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlemisslionheart.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tia Cantrell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, therapist and ADHD specialist in North Carolina. \u201cMost people will still need medication intervention but exercise can drastically improve the \u2018gaps\u2019 in medication effectiveness,\u201d for example, in between doses or when your teen first wakes up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cantrell stresses the importance of a good night\u2019s sleep for managing symptoms in teens with ADHD. \u201cWhile a good night\u2019s rest won\u2019t cure your ADHD symptoms, it will help your other ADHD strategies be more effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screening for dietary intolerances<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un-managed gluten intolerance and celiac disease can mimic ADHD symptoms. Cantrell emphasizes that current research doesn\u2019t support a link between a gluten-free diet and ADHD management, but that, \u201c\u2026children and teens whose ADHD symptoms did improve on a gluten-free diet were found to have undiagnosed celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.\u201d It\u2019s not a treatment per se, but it\u2019s worth bringing up with your child\u2019s doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the benefits of ADHD medication for teens?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKids who are appropriately treated will face no more or less challenges than any teen faces,\u201d says Dr. Shrand. \u201cBut kids who are not treated appropriately are at higher risk for substance use, dropping out of school, and feeling constantly inadequate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cantrell agrees: \u201cMany of the risks are reduced when teens are properly medicated for ADHD. They are less likely to get into a serious accident; less likely to become addicted to substances of any kind; less likely to self-harm, commit suicide, or end up in jail later on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Cantrell and Dr. Shrand recommend keeping teens on medication if they are struggling with ADHD symptoms. Dr. Shrand does not consider staying on ADHD medication to carry any significant risks. But if teens want to see if they can get by without medication, he suggests taking medication breaks occasionally, especially during school vacations. Stimulants leave the body quickly, so it doesn\u2019t take long to assess how teens feel when off of medication versus how they feel on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shrand recommends continuing medication into adulthood if it is helping. \u201cI have had adult patients who should have been treated as kids, but never were, start on medication and change their lives around.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlemisslionheart.com\/7-ways-adhd-actually-gets-worse-when-youre-an-adult\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cantrell experienced this personally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For our family, the benefits of ADHD medication far outweigh the risks. We decided to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romper.com\/p\/im-keeping-my-son-on-adhd-medication-until-he-can-decide-for-himself-12106079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep our son on his medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for as long as he needs it, or until he is old enough to make a different choice. We are happy to challenge the medication stigma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedicating (children with ADHD) gives them the level playing field they need to live up to their potential,\u201d says Cantrell, who likens ADHD medication to giving a child a bag in which to hold his over-spilling marbles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shrand compares ADHD medication to mountain-climbing equipment. \u201cI will ask a kid this: If you have a mountain to climb are you going to do it in your bare feet?\u00a0 What would happen if you tried? To climb your mountain you need the right equipment. And I don\u2019t care how much equipment they need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We explained to our son that, for him, taking ADHD medication is like wearing glasses\u2014something some people need in order to make the world clearer and easier to navigate.
