By the early 80s, it had already earned epidemic status in the public health sphere. It also collected a host of misconceptions about its symptoms and transmission. Today, while the number of people living with HIV is higher than ever, public perceptions surrounding HIV infections have shifted drastically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As HIV prevention, testing, and treatment have improved, AIDS-related deaths have decreased, and people with HIV can live long, healthy lives. The virus is still widespread, but by studying the statistics around HIV prevalence, transmission, treatment, and risk factors, we can better understand the disease and eliminate stigmas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-hiv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is HIV?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that attacks and destroys the immune system\u2019s CD4 cells, heightening a person\u2019s susceptibility to other diseases. It spreads through contact with an infected person\u2019s bodily fluids, most commonly via unprotected sexual contact, intravenous drug use, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually come in three stages. The first, called acute HIV Infection, occurs 2\u20136 weeks after transmission and manifests as a fever, sore throat, body aches, chills, headaches, or rash. The next, clinical latency, is typically asymptomatic, even though the virus continues multiplying. During this stage, people who take medication and keep a low viral load can prevent further transmission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Left untreated during clinical latency, HIV can become acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Symptoms of this late-stage infection may include persistent fatigue, weakness, oral lesions, chronic diarrhea, swollen lymph nodes, chills, fever, and weight loss. Not every person who has HIV will develop AIDS, especially if they take medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-hiv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is HIV?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, 40.8 million people worldwide were living with HIV. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hiv-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the world, an estimated 4,000 people become infected with HIV every day, including 1,100 people ages 15\u201324 years. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media_asset\/2022-global-aids-update_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNAIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 5.3 million people worldwide did not know that they were living with HIV\/AIDS in 2024. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amfar.org\/about-hiv-aids\/statistics-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amFAR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the start of the HIV epidemic in 1981, 91.4 million people have become infected. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/resources\/fact-sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNAIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"global-hiv-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global HIV statistics<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa is the most severely affected region, with an estimated 25.6 million cases, followed by Southeast Asia with 3.9 million, South and North America with 3.8 million, Europe with 3.0 million, and the Western Pacific with 2.2 million. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.who.int\/media\/docs\/default-source\/hq-hiv-hepatitis-and-stis-library\/hiv-estimates-ppt-2023-final.pdf?sfvrsn=51c4d01c_9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, there were an estimated 1.3 million new HIV infections worldwide, the lowest in decades, with the strongest decline in sub-Saharan Africa. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/resources\/fact-sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNAIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of 2024, around 77% of people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy and 73% had suppressed viral loads. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hiv-aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1996 to 2022, HIV treatment has prevented almost 21 million AIDS-related deaths around the world. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media_asset\/2023-unaids-global-aids-update-summary_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNAIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were 630,000 AIDS-related deaths around the world in 2024, down 54% from 2010. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/data\/gho\/data\/indicators\/indicator-details\/GHO\/number-of-deaths-due-to-hiv-aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"hiv-statistics-in-the-u-s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV statistics in the U.S.<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 2023, there were an estimated 1,132,031 U.S. residents living with HIV. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aidsvu.org\/local-data\/united-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDSvu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were 39,182 new cases of HIV in the U.S. and its dependent areas in 2023. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aidsvu.org\/local-data\/united-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDSvu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among U.S. regions, the South had the highest rate of HIV incidence due to male-to-male sexual contact, affecting 51% of this population., followed by the West (21%), Northeast (14%), and Midwest (14%). (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv-data\/nhss\/hiv-diagnoses-deaths-and-prevalence-2025.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, 76.3% of those living with HIV received care and 67.2% were virally suppressed. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aidsvu.org\/local-data\/united-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDSvu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, the death rate for HIV was 1.3 deaths per 100,000, down from 2.6 per 100,000 in 2010. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv-data\/media\/pdfs\/nhss\/nhss-surveillance-slideset-mortality.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"hiv-statistics-by-transmission-category\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV statistics by transmission category<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male-to-male sexual contact is the most common cause for HIV diagnoses in the U.S. It accounted for 66% of new diagnoses in 2023. Heterosexual contact accounted for 22%, and intravenous drug use accounted for 6%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv-data\/nhss\/hiv-diagnoses-deaths-and-prevalence-2025.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, people who inject drugs have 35 times the risk of acquiring HIV of the general population, female sex workers have 30 times the risk, gay men have 28 times the risk, and transgender women have 14 times the risk. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media_asset\/2022-global-aids-update_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNAIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the globe, an estimated 1.3 million women and girls living with HIV become pregnant each year. Without intervention, the rate of transmission during pregnancy, labor, delivery, or breastfeeding ranges from 15% to 45%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/global-hiv-hepatitis-and-stis-programmes\/hiv\/prevention\/mother-to-child-transmission-of-hiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S. and Europe, however, HIV medicines and other healthcare interventions have helped lower the rate of perinatal transmission of HIV to 1% or less. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hivinfo.nih.gov\/understanding-hiv\/fact-sheets\/preventing-perinatal-transmission-hiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"hiv-statistics-by-race-and-ethnicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV statistics by race and ethnicity<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, Black\/African American people accounted for 38% of new HIV infections of those ages 13 years and older in the U.S., followed by Hispanic\/Latino people at 32%, White people at 24%, multiracial people at 3%, and Asian people at 2%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/data-research\/facts-stats\/race-ethnicity.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black men are 3 times more likely to die from HIV than the total U.S. male population, and Black women are 3.84 times more likely than all females. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/minorityhealth.hhs.gov\/hivaids-and-african-americans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While 78% of White people who could benefit from PrEP received the medication in 2022, only 11% of Black people and 21% of Hispanic\/Latino people who could benefit received it. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.hiv.uw.edu\/pdf\/prevention\/preexposure-prophylaxis-prep\/core-concept\/all\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National HIV Curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"hiv-statistics-by-sex-and-gender\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV statistics by sex and gender<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2022, 7% were among men who reported heterosexual contact, and 70%\u00a0 were men who have sex with men (MSM). (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/group\/gender\/men\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, 45% of all new HIV infections were among women and girls in 2024. In sub-Saharan Africa, young women and girls accounted for 28% of all new HIV infections. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/global-hiv-hepatitis-and-stis-programmes\/populations\/transgender-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"hiv-statistics-by-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV statistics by age<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, 42.4% of people living with HIV were 55 years of age and older in the U.S., 20.6% were ages 45-54 years, 19.7% were ages 35-44 years, 14.8% were ages 25-34 years and 2.5% were ages 13-24 years. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/01-02-2023-african-leaders-unite-in-pledge-to-end-aids-in-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"common-hiv-complications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common HIV complications<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, an estimated 30% of the 690,000 AIDS-related deaths worldwide were due to tuberculosis, the leading cause of death among those with HIV. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/global-hiv-hepatitis-and-stis-programmes\/hiv\/treatment\/tuberculosis-hiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have HIV are 16 times more likely to contract tuberculosis. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/federal-response\/funding\/budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The estimated average cost of antiretroviral therapy in 2018 ranged from $36,000 to $48,000 per patient per year. (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 )<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"causes-of-hiv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of HIV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV is a sexually transmitted disease (STD), but while unprotected sex is the most common cause, it\u2019s not the only one. The transmission of HIV also comes from exchanges of blood, semen, breast milk, and vaginal or rectal fluids. So, unclean needles, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and other exposures to bodily fluids can also lead to infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHIV can be contracted by anyone, regardless of your age, race, sexual orientation, religion, or lifestyle,\u201d says Jill Fuller, Ph.D., CRNP, who is a representative for <a href=\"https:\/\/takecontrolhiv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Take Control HIV<\/a>. \u201cIf you have sex, you are at risk. If you utilize used street drug equipment, you are at risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theoretically, an organ transplant or blood transfusion could spread HIV as well but donated blood and tissues go through rigorous screenings, so this is exceptionally rare. The virus cannot spread through saliva, sweat, tears, sharing utensils, toilet seats, swimming pools, or bug bites.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hiv-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV prevention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that anyone who\u2019s aware of HIV\u2019s risk factors can take measures to avoid or mitigate them. Since it often spreads via unprotected sexual contact, wearing a condom during sex\u2014particularly for MSM and sex workers\u2014can be especially effective. Limiting the number of sexual partners and getting tested for other sexually transmitted diseases helps, too, since having an STD can make it easier to contract and spread HIV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people who inject drugs, avoiding shared needles is essential to prevention. \u201cWhile the transmission of HIV through heterosexual and homosexual intercourse remains significant due to the higher numbers, it&#8217;s important to note that sharing needles from multiple people can be more common than engaging in sexual activities with multiple partners,\u201d says Chief Clinical Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.symetriarecovery.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Symetria Recovery<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-lea-mcmahon-ed-d-lpc-870b6819\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Lea McMahon, LPC, EdD<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best to avoid injecting drugs entirely\u2014or at least use clean, new equipment every time. However, Dr. McMahon says that mental health treatment is just as important for prevention because \u201cindividuals with mental health challenges or substance use disorders often engage in high-risk behaviors, increasing their vulnerability to HIV transmission.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who engage in risky activities can also take PrEP, a drug regimen that reduces the chances of contracting HIV via sex by around 99%, and via injecting drugs by at least 74%, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/hivinfo.nih.gov\/understanding-hiv\/fact-sheets\/pre-exposure-prophylaxis-prep\">HIVinfo.<\/a> If you take part in these activities, Dr. Fuller says, \u201cFind a medical provider you can be honest with, so you can properly protect yourself from HIV.\u201d. She also suggests \u201cutilizing local resources, such as sites for free condoms, needle exchange programs, and education programs so you can learn more about HIV prevention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular HIV testing and locating nearby HIV prevention services is also important for anyone who thinks they have been exposed to the virus or may be exposed in the future. Dr. Fuller says that anyone engaging in risk-taking behavior should get tested at least two to three times per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-hiv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating HIV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effective treatment for HIV is antiretroviral therapy (ART), a combination of several medications that reduce a person\u2019s viral load. When taken as prescribed, these medications can reduce it so much that the virus is undetectable by lab tests. People who can maintain this undetectable viral load also won\u2019t transmit HIV sexually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiretroviral medicines that healthcare providers often prescribe for HIV treatment include nucleoside\/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ziagen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ziagen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (abacavir), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sustiva\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustiva<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (efavirenz), protease inhibitors like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reyataz<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (atazanavir), entry inhibitors like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fuzeon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fuzeon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (enfuvirtide), and integrase inhibitors like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/isentress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isentress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (raltegravir). Typically, a course of ART will include two or three drugs from different classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people with HIV can benefit substantially from mental health treatment as well. \u201cTreating addiction and mental health alongside HIV is crucial because improving mental health positively impacts treatment adherence, quality of life, and coping mechanisms during challenging phases,\u201d says Dr. McMahon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though there is currently no cure for HIV\/AIDS, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help people with HIV live long, healthy lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hiv-questions-and-answers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV questions and answers<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"what-percentage-of-the-u-s-has-hiv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What percentage of the U.S. has HIV?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 0.3% of the U.S. population has HIV\u2014around 1.2 million people, according to the CDC.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-is-the-survival-rate-of-people-with-hiv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the survival rate of people with HIV?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv-data\/media\/pdfs\/nhss\/nhss-surveillance-slideset-mortality.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the death rate for HIV was 1.3 deaths per 100,000 in 2022, around half of what it was in 2010\u2014 2.6 deaths per 100,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-many-people-receive-an-hiv-diagnosis-each-year-in-the-u-s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people receive an HIV diagnosis each year in the U.S.?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 39,182 U.S. adults received an HIV diagnosis in 2023.
