The truth about the flu is much more serious. Typical flu symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle and body aches, cough, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, stuffy nose, sore throat, and sometimes stomach symptoms. But many don\u2019t realize that the flu can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-complications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause serious complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as pneumonia, worsening of existing health conditions\u2014like heart disease and lung disease, hospitalization, and even death. (And that\u2019s not even taking into consideration the fact that the 2020-2021 flu season will run concurrently with the COVID-19 pandemic.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring the 2018-2019 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick, 647,000 people were hospitalized, and 36,400-61,200 died,\u201d says Kumar Dharmarajan, MD, the chief scientific officer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloverhealth.com\/en\/members\/find-provider\/3e105c36-4d6b-54cc-b98b-b294fd5d8d26?returnLink=\/find-by-name&amp;provider_type=practitioner&amp;offset=0&amp;general_name=Kumar%20Dharmarajan&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clover Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Preventing the flu is paramount both to the individual and the overall population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu shot is the most effective way to prevent both catching and spreading the flu; but cleanliness practices like handwashing, sanitizing surfaces, and overall healthy choices can go a long way to curb the spread of the flu.<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"transmission\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>How is the flu spread?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, people infected with the flu are contagious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-is-the-flu-contagious\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one day before they feel sick until five to seven days after getting sick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but this can vary. \u201cAccording to [studies], in some cases, only half of the people infected will actually have symptoms,\u201d Dr. Dharmarajan says. \u201cThat means you can be totally unaware that you have the flu, but still have the virus in your body and be able to transmit it to others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-you-get-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus is spread through droplets of bodily fluids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which someone may come into close contact with through coughs, sneezes, or by touching contaminated surfaces like doorknobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because more than one strain of flu virus circulates each flu season, and those strains change from year to year, you are still vulnerable to catching the flu if you have already had the flu, even recently.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"flu-vaccine\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>The flu vaccine is the best defense<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The single most important thing individuals can do to fight the spread of the flu, and to protect themselves, is to get the flu vaccine (via flu shot or nasal spray vaccine) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each and every<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> year. The flu shot is the only precaution that creates an immune response that is specific to the flu virus itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe CDC recommends the flu shot for everyone aged 6 months and over,\u201d Dr. Dharmarajan says. \u201cThe vaccine is particularly important for populations at higher risk of severe infection, such as young children under the age of 5, adults over 50, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are even egg-free versions now for those afraid an egg allergy precludes their receiving protection,\u201d says Joshua Septimus, MD, internal medicine and associate professor of clinical medicine at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/faculty\/joshua-septimus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Methodist Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Septimus stresses the importance of flu shots for people who are pregnant. \u201cPregnant women are at a very high risk of deadly complications of the flu,\u201d says Dr. Septimus. \u201cAll pregnant women and their loved ones should make flu vaccination a priority.\u201d Getting the flu vaccine while pregnant can even protect babies in the months after they are born, when they are too young to be vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-while-pregnant\/\"><b>Everything you should know about getting the flu shot while pregnant<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu shot can vary in effectiveness from year to year and from person to person, but the overall effectiveness of the shot is between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccines-work\/vaccineeffect.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% and 60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when most circulating flu viruses are well-matched to the vaccine. Even though the shot is not 100% effective, it\u2019s still very important to get the flu shot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu shot not only prevents many individuals from getting the flu, but it also prevents anyone that person would have infected from becoming ill, and so on. The fewer people that get sick, the less it spreads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine also helps to protect against the serious complications of the flu, even if a vaccinated person does become infected. During the flu season of 2018-2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-statistics-infographic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the flu shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is estimated to have prevented 4.4 million flu illnesses, 2.3 million influenza-associated medical visits, and 58,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations. The flu vaccine saves children\u2019s lives and has been shown to reduce flu-related PICU stays for children by 74%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many ways to categorize flu shots, one of which is whether they are a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trivalent (three component)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flublok-quadrivalent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quadrivalent (four component)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formulation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/keyfacts.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exist under each category, and can be selected depending on the age and\/or other needs of the patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should get your flu shot by the end of October each year, but because it takes two weeks to become effective after the injection, earlier is better. \u201cIf you wait until others in your community start coming down with the flu, you\u2019ll leave yourself vulnerable during the window between the time you get the shot and the time the protection kicks in,\u201d Dr. Dharmarajan explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you missed the October \u201cdeadline,\u201d it\u2019s not too late to get vaccinated. The flu season runs into May, so it\u2019s better late than never.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is a lot of misinformation out there about the flu shot, the truth is that it is a safe and effective way to prevent the flu and the complications of the flu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/reasons-not-to-get-the-flu-shot\/\"><b>7 common myths about the flu shot debunked<\/b><\/a><br \/>\n<a id=\"prevention\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to prevent the flu (9 steps after getting a flu shot)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the flu shot is the number one defense, there are other measures we can take to slow or prevent the spread of the flu.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Stay home while sick.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Staying away from other people won\u2019t do much for your own illness, but it\u2019s hugely important for flu prevention. Even if you feel well enough to work or run errands, you could infect someone who is at a higher risk of serious flu complications. The same goes for keeping kids home from school while sick.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wash your hands.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWash your hands, more than you think you need to,\u201d Dr. Dharmarajan advises. Use soap and warm water, rub vigorously for at least 20 seconds (try singing a children\u2019s song like \u201cMary Had a Little Lamb\u201d or \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d\u2014twice) and dry your hands. If possible, use a paper towel to turn off the tap. Frequent handwashing is important whether or not you are sick. Carry alcohol-based hand sanitizer for times in which handwashing is not possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Cover coughs and sneezes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coughs and sneezes can cause droplets to travel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/the-human-body\/how-far-do-coughs-and-sneezes-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 20 feet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the droplets can stay suspended in the air for up to 10 minutes. Anyone in the \u201cline of fire,\u201d or who touches anything that is, will be exposed to flu germs. Instead of covering your mouth with your hands, use the inside of your elbow or your upper sleeve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid touching your face.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can\u2019t wash your hands every five seconds, so prevent any germs you may have on your hand from getting inside your body by keeping your hands away from your face. It\u2019s a hard habit to break, but worth it!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wear a mask. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re in public places outside your family or quarantine pod, be sure to wear a face covering. This will help protect you from COVID-19 as well as the flu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Keep communal areas clean.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Phones, doorknobs, and anything multiple people in your area use should be cleaned with disinfectant regularly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Get enough sleep. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this won\u2019t directly prevent the flu, getting enough sleep is important to your overall good health, which in turn helps your immune system fight off the flu virus. Aim for eight hours of quality sleep per night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Drink plenty of fluids, eat well, and stay active.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As with sleep, this is not a direct defense against the flu, but rather helps keep your body healthy overall and better able to handle viruses it comes across.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stay away from smoking.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cSmoking not only makes you more likely to catch the flu, it makes it harder to fight off the virus once you\u2019re sick,\u201d Dr. Dharmarajan says. \u201cEven secondhand smoke can worsen your congestion and cough during the flu.\u201d And the same is true if you contract COVID-19.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to prevent the flu from spreading in your house<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying home while sick is crucial\u2014but what happens if someone in your house is sick, and you aren\u2019t (and don\u2019t want to be)? It\u2019s time to set some house rules for sickness.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Keep the sick person as isolated as possible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If they can have a room, and even a bathroom, to themselves, that reduces the risk to others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wear a mask.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Either the person who is sick can wear a mask, or the rest of the household can. Or both, if you want to be extra cautious!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Have single-use tissues and towels.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No sharing! Have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/dts\/guidance\/flu\/protectyourself_nonhealthcare.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no-touch trash can<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for used tissues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Disinfect surfaces.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make sure to disinfect surfaces\u2014don\u2019t just \u201cclean.\u201d Cleaning will take care of dirt, but only disinfecting will kill viruses. Use a solution that specifies on the label that it kills influenza viruses. Alternatively, you can mix \u00bc cup of chlorine bleach into one gallon of hot water. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/publications\/7114.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some places to pay close attention to include:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doorknobs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light switches<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handles<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cellphones<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toys<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabletops<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counters<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chair backs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any other surfaces people frequently touch<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to prevent the flu naturally\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, vitamin C and other natural remedies haven\u2019t been definitively shown to prevent the flu,\u201d Dr. Dharmarajan says. \u201cEating nutritious and whole foods, exercising, avoiding smoking, and staying generally healthy is always important, but make sure to get a flu shot as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Septimus is more direct: \u201cI recommend against them,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be wary of places advertising \u201cflu shot alternatives\u201d or other products that claim to directly prevent the flu. While keeping your body in good shape might help you fight off illnesses in general, these products are usually not effective enough immune boosters, and none of them fight the flu specifically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some natural remedies, such as honey for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-sore-throat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or ginger tea for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upset stomach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can help with symptoms of the flu, but the best way to prevent the flu is still the flu shot, practicing proper hygiene, and adopting an overall healthy lifestyle.<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"medications\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Medications that help fight the flu<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are no cures for the flu, Nodar Janas, MD, medical director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uesrnc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York, says there are a couple of antiviral medications that could help. \u201cIf administered in a timely manner, [they] can help decrease the severity and shorten the length of flu symptoms,\u201d he says. They\u2019re available by prescription only so you\u2019ll have to make a trip to your doctor\u2019s office.
