If you\u2019ve ever felt the painful symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI), it\u2019s likely you want relief fast. You\u2019re not alone\u2014UTIs are common. They occur when bacteria <\/span>like Escherichia coli<\/span><\/a> (E. coli) infect the urinary tract organs, including the urethra (urethritis), bladder (cystitis), ureters, and kidneys (pyelonephritis).<\/span><\/p>\n

Most <\/span>urinary tract infections<\/span><\/a> are caused by bacteria and are treated with <\/span>antibiotics<\/span><\/a>. Because of that, it\u2019s easy to assume that <\/span>amoxicillin<\/span><\/a>\u2014a wide-spectrum antibiotic that primary care <\/span>providers commonly prescribe<\/span><\/a> for certain infections\u2014may be one of the first recommended treatment options for UTI. But it\u2019s not always the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

What medication a primary care provider will prescribe for a person with a UTI, depends on <\/span>factors like<\/span><\/a> the part of the urinary tract affected, whether it is a recurrent UTI, the bacteria suspected, the age of the patient, if the patient is pregnant, and the geographical area\u2019s drug resistance rate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can amoxicillin treat a UTI?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cAmoxicillin isn’t often a first-line treatment for urinary tract infections (UTIs),\u201d says <\/span>Jason Kovac<\/span><\/a>, MD, Ph.D., a reproductive urologist and regional medical director for Posterity Health in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic, which means it\u2019s in <\/span>the same class<\/span><\/a> as <\/span>penicillin<\/span><\/a>. \u201cIt helps fight bacterial infections by disrupting the formation of bacterial cell walls,\u201d says <\/span>Max Ruvinov<\/span><\/a>, Pharm.D., a clinical pharmacist at Mercy Health Care in Chesterfield, Missouri.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amoxicillin is effective for treating certain types of UTI, especially those related to <\/span>kidney and bladder infections<\/span><\/a>. However, first-line treatments for UTIs typically are antibiotics Bactrim (<\/span>trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole<\/span><\/a>) and Macrobid (<\/span>nitrofurantoin<\/span><\/a>). These <\/span>antibiotics<\/span><\/a> are more effective, have higher urinary concentrations, and have less impact on the normal gut bacterial flora.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One older <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> indicates that amoxicillin, especially when combined with clavulanic acid, may act against bacteria like E. coli and Klebsiella, which commonly cause UTIs. Another older <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> suggests that taking amoxicillin with clavulanic acid reduces antibiotic resistance by blocking the medication from being destroyed by a bacterial enzyme called beta-lactamase. This means that the combination medication <\/span>Augmentin<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>amoxicillin-clavulanic acid<\/span><\/a>) is useful in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to the beta-lactam class of drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t

Is amoxicillin good for treating UTIs?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Although amoxicillin can treat some UTIs, it\u2019s not always \u201cthe best\u201d choice. Amoxicillin works on some strains of bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, but there is a high <\/span>prevalence of resistance<\/span><\/a> associated with this drug, which is why it may not be the ideal antibiotic for treating certain cases of UTI. The rates of microbial resistance to amoxicillin <\/span>vary<\/span><\/a> from region to region, with a rate of up to <\/span>40%<\/span><\/a> in the United States. <\/span><\/p>\n

While healthcare professionals don\u2019t always recommend amoxicillin as the first line of treatment for UTI, there are cases where it can be prescribed instead of other antibiotics, e.g., when patients are allergic or sensitive to those other antibiotics or when they are taking medications that would interact with other antibiotics.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the primary reasons amoxicillin may be prescribed is for the treatment of kidney infections due to its effectiveness against the bacteria responsible for the infections,\u201d says Dr. Kovac. He adds that doctors may also prescribe amoxicillin as a means of \u201cearly intervention\u201d when a UTI is suspected but a urine culture has not resulted. Depending on the urine culture results, the antibiotic may <\/span>switch<\/span><\/a> from amoxicillin to a narrow-spectrum antibiotic,\u00a0 better targeting the microorganism causing the UTI.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no \u201cone size fits it all\u201d antibiotic treatment for urinary tract infections. No scientific evidence shows that one particular antibiotic is the best for all UTI cases. The ideal medicine will depend on the type of UTI, whether it\u2019s a recurring infection, if there is any co-existing health condition (like pre-existing kidney failure or pregnancy), and the overall health status of an individual.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amoxicillin dosage for UTI<\/span><\/h2>\n

For UTI treatment, adults are typically prescribed 250 to 500 mg of amoxicillin every eight hours, according to Dr. Ruvinov, while children are prescribed a dosage based on their body weight, commonly 20 to 40 mg\/kg\/day, divided into three doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Kovac adds that amoxicillin treatment typically lasts for two to three days\u2013however, the duration will vary. Some people may need to take antibiotics for <\/span>three to five days<\/span><\/a>, while others may require a <\/span>seven-day<\/span><\/a> treatment course <\/span>or more<\/span><\/a>. When on the proper medication and in the absence of complications, response to treatment is often evident within <\/span>24 to 48 hours<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Side effects of amoxicillin for UTI<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cWhile amoxicillin is generally safe, it can sometimes cause side effects,\u201d Dr. Ruvinov says, pointing out common side effects like nausea and diarrhea. Rarely, it can cause more severe side effects, <\/span>like<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n
