A whopping 75% of Americans are coffee drinkers, and almost 50% of us drink it daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because coffee is so widely consumed you likely take time to think about how it affects your body in the long-term. It\u2019s easy to forget that drinking coffee can affect your health. High cholesterol is a dietary concern that can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/depression-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it\u2019s crucial to understand how and whether coffee can affect your cholesterol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-coffee-cause-high-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can coffee cause high cholesterol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be wondering what coffee and cholesterol have to do with each other. Well, that\u2019s a great question. Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in many foods. It\u2019s also produced by our liver in two forms: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). While everyone has cholesterol in their body, having too much can adversely affect heart health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee itself doesn\u2019t contain any cholesterol, but its natural oils contain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1295997\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kahweol and cafestol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17456796\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chemical compounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have the potential to raise cholesterol levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most experts agree that quitting a moderate amount of coffee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-you-should-know-about-cholesterol-and-coffee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably won\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014but could drinking lots of coffee or certain types of coffee <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels? The truth is that it\u2019s very difficult to generalize how coffee impacts cholesterol levels in the average person. \u201cThis is very hard to track and correlate in real life,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/manhattancardiology.com\/midtown-east-team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Greene, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Dr. Greene points out that many of the studies conducted linking coffee to higher cholesterol levels were small, and the elevations of patients&#8217; cholesterol values in the blood work observed in the studies were modest. In other words, yes, the chemical compounds in coffee can raise cholesterol, but the effect coffee has on your cholesterol depends on individual factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, who should be thinking about how their morning cup of joe impacts cholesterol? Well, firstly, if you\u2019ve already been told to watch your cholesterol or that you have cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, you might want to monitor your coffee intake. Recent studies suggest that daily consumption of unfiltered coffee\u2014coffee that doesn\u2019t pass through a paper filter, such as French press or cold brew\u2014can lead to a marginal increase in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/article\/153\/4\/353\/129046\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lipid levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.topnutritioncoaching.com\/nutritionists\/catalina-ruz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catalina Ruz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS, a registered dietitian with Top Nutrition Coaching in North Carolina. This effect is more pronounced in individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22713771\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing high cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe rise in cholesterol levels is typically marginal in individuals with previously normal lipid profiles,\u201d Ruz adds. Marginal in this context means that the slightly higher levels of cholesterol in otherwise healthy individuals correlated with coffee isn\u2019t enough to make a difference in your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there could be other reasons you should avoid coffee\u2014and that\u2019s its caffeine content. \u201cCaffeine, for some people, can worsen blood pressure and risk factors for arrhythmias,\u201d Dr. Greene says. \u201cThose people should avoid all forms of caffeine or stimulants, not limited to coffee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-caffeine-raise-blood-pressure\/\"><b>Does caffeine raise your blood pressure?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, coffee could impact your cholesterol levels, but it\u2019s not the only factor. \u201cA diet rich in saturated fats has a much more significant and substantial impact on cholesterol levels than coffee consumption does,\u201d Ruz says. When you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, it\u2019s important to speak with your cardiologist or healthcare provider about the best diet for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-that-affect-coffee-and-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that affect coffee and cholesterol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If coffee doesn\u2019t have any cholesterol in it, you may be wondering how it has any impact on cholesterol at all. Here\u2019s how it works: Kahweol and cafestol, which are diterpenes (active compounds) can raise the serum cholesterol levels and triglycerides found in the blood. In plain English, serum cholesterol is a way of measuring the amount of lipids (fats) in the body, and triglycerides are fats bundled with cholesterol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, these active ingredients in coffee change your body\u2019s chemistry in a way that increases the amount of fat that is measurable in the blood and serum. But how you make your coffee doesn\u2019t just affect how it tastes, it also impacts how healthy it is for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cross-sectional studies suggest that brewing methods that use a paper filter, such as regular coffee pots, Chemex, or v60 coffee drippers, can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22713771\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce compounds linked to higher cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Ruz. That\u2019s because they essentially filter out kahweol and cafestol. Conversely, methods without a paper filter, like French press coffee, espresso, Turkish coffee, or Moka pots, tend to retain higher concentrations of kahweol and cafestol, thereby having a more significant impact on cholesterol levels. Instant coffee, which is a powder you mix with hot water and don\u2019t have to brew, has lower levels of diterpenes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudies also suggest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22713771\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differences between decaffeinated and caffeinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coffee, with caffeinated coffee affecting LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, while decaffeinated coffee does not show these effects,\u201d Ruz says while noting that more research is needed, as some studies report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8194502\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimal differences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"amount-consumed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amount consumed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne or two cups of coffee per day is generally safe for most people,\u201d Dr. Green says. She says this is true for general cardiovascular health, and people shouldn\u2019t have much more than that\u2014regardless of their lipid profile. More than this could have an impact on your cholesterol levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"preparation-method\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparation method<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you put in your coffee makes a big difference in how healthy it is. \u201cThe milk, milk alternatives, sugars, and syrups people add to their coffee are generally more damaging to health than the brewed coffee itself,\u201d Dr. Green says. She says the rule of thumb she gives patients is: \u201cDon\u2019t drink your calories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these additions can impact your cholesterol levels, even more so than the coffee alone. Opt for low-fat milk with a dash of cinnamon for a little extra flavor. Cinnamon has been shown to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6425402\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in healthy adults, so you\u2019ll be adding a little health boost, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"coffee-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee alternatives<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of health benefits of coffee. \u201cCoffee contains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24967266\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounds known for their health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and protection against chronic illnesses,\u201d Ruz says. These healthy compounds include antioxidants like flavonoids, polyphenols, along with traces of carbohydrates, lipids, nitrogen compounds, potassium, and magnesium. These antioxidants have been linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32706535\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protective effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke, says Ruz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coffee-benefits\/\"><b>10 health benefits of coffee<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you and your provider decide eliminating or reducing coffee would be beneficial for your cholesterol levels, there are alternatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you crave caffeine, tea is a great substitute for coffee. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8366653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7216725\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/yerba-mate-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yerba mate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have caffeine and are beneficial for your cholesterol. Like coffee, though, it can be easy to fill your mug up with additives, so mind your milk and sugar if you switch to tea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re open to experimenting with herbal teas with no caffeine, dandelion tea is a great option for coffee lovers.
