You might turn to Tylenol for a fever and Advil or Aleve for arthritis pain. But what about when a headache strikes? Is one of these painkillers superior to the other?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value='{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}' data-sheets-userformat='{\"2\":6849,\"3\":{\"1\":0},\"9\":1,\"10\":2,\"12\":0,\"14\":{\"1\":2,\"2\":0},\"15\":\"Arial\"}' data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Even though Advil and Tylenol are two of the most common OTC [over-the-counter] pain medications, many people don&rsquo;t know that they work differently and have different safety concerns,&rdquo; explains Ashley Wong, Pharm.D., a member of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/author\/ashley-wong-pharm-d\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare Medical Review Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol and Advil have different mechanisms of action to induce pain relief. &ldquo;Tylenol works as an analgesic, meaning it relieves pain felt attributed to the nervous system,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/clanderson1277\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calvin Anderson, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a therapy care pharmacist for Soleo Health in Tempe, Arizona. &ldquo;It has both pain relieving and heat relieving [or fever-reducing] properties.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen and naproxen, however, are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. &ldquo;Advil works to reduce inflammation throughout the body, which in turn minimizes aches and pains associated with swelling or inflammation,&rdquo; Dr. Anderson says. So, which one is best for headaches?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-tylenol-or-advil-better-for-headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Tylenol or Advil better for headaches?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When managing headaches, Tylenol <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27306653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stands out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the pain reliever of choice for its efficacy and safety profile, particularly for tension headaches, the most common type of headache. Studies have demonstrated acetaminophen&#8217;s ability to effectively reduce pain, highlighting that a big advantage it holds lies in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7438775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of gastrointestinal side effects compared to NSAIDs like ibuprofen. This makes acetaminophen (known as paracetamol outside the U.S.) a preferred choice for individuals with stomach sensitivities or a history of ulcers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil, on the other hand, exerts certain anti-inflammatory effects, which come in handy when treating sinus headaches where inflammation is the primary concern. Ibuprofen, when taken at a high dose of 400 mg every eight hours, has also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25530283\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consistently shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to trump acetaminophen in the management of different pain conditions, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9013368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle contraction headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Choosing between Tylenol or Advil is often a personal choice for those who have headaches,&rdquo; Dr. Wong says. &ldquo;Both can help with headache pain, so you may want to choose based on your medical history.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to learn more about the potential risks of each medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"risks-of-taking-tylenol-or-advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks of taking Tylenol or Advil<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like any other medicine, ibuprofen and acetaminophen come with their own list of potential risks, particularly for individuals who have pre-existing medical conditions and pregnant women. It is vital to follow your healthcare provider&rsquo;s medical advice when it comes to taking these medicines and make sure you take only the recommended dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tylenol-risks-and-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol risks and side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol is generally considered safe for most people when taken as directed, even during pregnancy. &ldquo;Tylenol is typically well tolerated and doesn&rsquo;t cause many side effects,&rdquo; Dr. Wong says. However, the active ingredient of this drug is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK548162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolized in the liver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means that taking exceedingly high doses can lead to liver damage. And due to acetaminophen&rsquo;s relative safety, it is often within many different OTC and prescription products used for pain relief as well as cough and cold\/flu products. So if you&rsquo;re taking one product for a headache and another for a cold, check to see if both contain acetaminophen and keep overall doses below the daily limits discussed below to avoid liver damage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;When taken in large quantities (greater than 4,000 mg in 24 hours), Tylenol is dangerous and will overwhelm your liver&rsquo;s ability to break down the medication,&rdquo; Dr. Anderson says. Individuals with pre-existing liver conditions or those who are taking medicines with a narrow effective dose range that are also metabolized in the liver should err on the side of caution when taking acetaminophen, particularly for chronic pain conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"advil-risks-and-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil risks and side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an NSAID, Advil is known to have side effects on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8002800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is not considered safe for use during pregnancy as it may affect fetal organ development. &ldquo;Advil may cause stomach upset, so it&rsquo;s best to take it with food,&rdquo; Dr. Wong says. Using Advil regularly or for prolonged periods of time can lead to inflammation, ulcers, and even bleeding in the stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Advil can also affect your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8727534\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidneys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In individuals with pre-existing kidney disease or those taking other medicines that can also affect the kidneys, taking Advil can aggravate problems and lead to severe kidney damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, all NSAIDs have the potential to increase the risk of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heart-attack\/expert-answers\/nsaids-heart-attack-stroke\/faq-20147557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as a heart attack. This occurs because of the way NSAIDs work. Advil belongs to a group of medicines that exert pain relief by blocking the production of cyclo-oxygenase 2, an enzyme that plays an important role in the synthesis of prostaglandins (hormone-like substances). If necessary, this can be increased to two tablets every six hours, but not exceeding six tablets (1,200 mg) in 24 hours. &ldquo;People with heart disease, bleeding disorders, and kidney problems should take Advil with caution,&rdquo; Dr. Wong explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, watch out for combination treatments&mdash;like cold and flu formulations. &ldquo;There are many many products containing either acetaminophen or ibuprofen, so individuals are urged to read each label carefully to ensure they&rsquo;re not taking more than they need to,&rdquo; Dr. Anderson says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-if-tylenol-or-advil-does-not-relieve-headache\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if Tylenol or Advil does not relieve headache?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Tylenol or Advil doesn&#8217;t alleviate your headache, there are other strategies and treatments you can consider.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Alternate Tylenol and Advil. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Since each drug works differently, individuals could take both together or alternate between the two drugs,&#8221; Dr. Anderson says.
