This technology is effective, but expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The national average cost of an MRI in the United States is $1,325, but you could pay much less or much more depending on various factors. We\u2019ll give you an idea of what you can expect to pay and how to lower your out-of-pocket cost for an MRI.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-an-mri-cost-without-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does an MRI cost without insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a wide price range for an MRI scan because many factors can impact the cost. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meyudelevich\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Yudelevich, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an independent patient advocate at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/getmypha.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Personal Health Advocate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York City, an MRI can range from $400\u2013$12,000 without insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-an-mri-cost-with-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does an MRI cost with insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance coverage varies by plan, but most health insurance policies cover at least part of the cost of an MRI if it\u2019s medically necessary. However, you may need to meet your deductible first. A deductible is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/glossary\/deductible\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you pay for covered health services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before your insurance provider starts to pay.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve paid your deductible, you\u2019ll only be responsible for paying coinsurance or a copay. If you\u2019re unsure, contact your health insurance provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"do-medicaid-and-medicare-cover-mris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do Medicaid and Medicare cover MRIs?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Medicaid and Medicare provide partial or complete coverage for MRI costs. \u201cMedicaid, which is state medical insurance for those with low income, covers all medical services, including MRIs, without cost to patients,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drvirgie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virgie Bright Ellington, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical billing expert based in New York City and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crushmedicaldebt.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Your Doctor Wants You Know to Crush Medical Debt<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, Medicaid coverage varies since states can establish their own eligibility rules and requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/coverage\/diagnostic-non-laboratory-tests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covers diagnostic non-laboratory tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including MRI procedures. After meeting your deductible, you will need to pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Medicare beneficiaries <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/procedure-price-lookup\/cost\/70553\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spend an average<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of $60 for MRIs at ambulatory surgical centers and $94 at hospital outpatient departments.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only time I see Medicaid and Medicare not covering an MRI is because they believe that it is not required,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/adriagross?trk=author_mini-profile_title\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adria Goldman Gross<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical bill advocate and CEO and president of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalinsuranceadvocacy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MedWise Insurance Advocacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Monroe, New York. \u201cMany times, they recommend other avenues before they will agree to pay for an MRI.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-that-affect-the-cost-of-an-mri\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that affect the cost of an MRI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary factors that can affect the cost of an MRI include insurance coverage, type of facility (inpatient or outpatient), location of the MRI (area of the body), and geographic location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these factors, Dr. Ellington shares that features such as radio-opaque contrast agents, which are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/radiopaque-agent--diagnostic-injection-ureteral-injection-intracervical\/description\/drg-20070225\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to diagnose certain medical conditions, can impact MRI costs. They contain gadolinium, an element to help increase the effect of the MRI\u2019s magnetic field.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insurance-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance coverage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have insurance coverage, your out-of-pocket expenses for an MRI will vary depending on what your health plan or policy covers. Your insurance deductibles, coinsurance, and copays all can contribute to the costs of an MRI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another factor that impacts your MRI cost with insurance is whether you visit an in-network facility. Check your health insurance policy\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/marketplace\/outreach-and-education\/what-you-should-know-provider-networks.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provider network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find an in-network facility. You can also call the phone number on the back of your health insurance card for assistance choosing a provider in your network.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that your insurance company has the right to determine whether your MRI is medically necessary, and if they don\u2019t, they can refuse to cover your costs. When this occurs, you may need to request a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/content.naic.org\/sites\/default\/files\/consumer-health-insurance-what-is-medical-necessity.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter of medical necessity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d from your healthcare provider, who can send it to your insurance company as part of their certification or utilization review process. After submitting documentation, your insurance provider will review your requested medical services to determine if they\u2019ll help cover your MRI&#8217;s partial or total costs or if you\u2019ll be responsible for out-of-pocket costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrior authorizations may be necessary both with Medicare and Medicaid, which are usually submitted by the ordering physician prior to the diagnostic imaging study,\u201d Dr. Yudelevich says. \u201cEach insurance plan will have specific requirements for these authorizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"type-of-mri\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type of MRI<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several types of MRIs are administered for various medical reasons and on certain parts of the body. There are two main types of MRI machines: closed-bore and open-bore.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aimseducation.edu\/blog\/wide-bore-versus-traditional-mri-imagers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closed-bore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or simply closed MRI machine has a 60-centimeter ring of magnets\u2014a \u201cbore\u201d\u2014where you\u2019d lie during the procedure to have your images taken. Because of its size and the fact that it\u2019s closed on all sides, it\u2019s common for people to feel a bit cramped or claustrophobic, but it does deliver more detailed images.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An open-bore or open MRI machine provides a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/4876-magnetic-resonance-imaging-mri\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more comfortable experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people who are claustrophobic, as it has a larger space between the magnets than a closed-bore machine. However, the distance between the patient and the magnets lowers the imaging quality. Open-bore MRIs tend to cost less than closed-bore MRIs because closed-bore MRIs tend to be a more complex type of machine and have pricier maintenance needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"type-of-hospital-or-outpatient-facility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type of hospital or outpatient facility<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One factor that affects the cost of an MRI is whether it\u2019s performed in an outpatient or inpatient setting. Inpatient care facilities typically cost more than outpatient care facilities because of the additional facility costs on top of the procedure costs and physician fees. However, that\u2019s not always the case. \u201c\u200bRadiology and other outpatient departments affiliated with hospitals are always the most expensive settings to get medical services,\u201d Dr. Ellington adds. \u201cA knee MRI, for example, can cost as little as $268 at an independent outpatient facility and go up to $3,227 at an outpatient facility affiliated with a hospital or medical center.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared among inpatient facilities, nonprofit and government hospitals charge more for brain MRIs than for-profit hospitals, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2802683\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a research article published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Network Open<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The article reveals that the health system\u2019s characteristics account for 36% of the variation in prices for brain scans. Also, higher-priced facilities tend to be in more affluent areas, have fewer Medicare patients, and employ physicians in their MRI departments. To help calm patients, your radiologist may prescribe medication before administering an MRI.
