We&rsquo;ll detail the potential health benefits of lion&rsquo;s mane supplements, the forms in which they&rsquo;re available, and what to consider before taking them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-lions-mane-benefits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 lion&#8217;s mane benefits&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane is reported to have a number of health benefits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-regulates-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Regulates blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane may help people with diabetes keep better control of their blood sugar levels. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2221169117310390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that extract of Hericium erinaceus has been shown to lower blood glucose levels in animals with diabetes. The protective effect did seem to depend on the dose, however.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-regulates-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Regulates cholesterol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom extract may be useful in helping regulate cholesterol levels. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20622452\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that it may help lipid metabolism, which could help reduce cholesterol levels.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-helps-protect-brain-function\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Helps protect brain function<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane might help with brain function and possibly ward off cognitive decline. &ldquo;In fact, this seems to be one of the most popular reasons for embracing lion&rsquo;s mane,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tod-cooperman-aaa441a6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tod Cooperman, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of Consumer Lab, which conducts independent testing of supplements.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-3921\/8\/8\/261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antioxidants<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extracts of the Hericium erinaceus mushroom have neuroprotective effects, which raises hopes that it could be helpful for thwarting neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson&rsquo;s disease and Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease. Much more research is needed to confirm that, however. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ptr.2634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychotherapy Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people with mild cognitive impairment who took four 250 mg tablets three times per day for 16 weeks showed more improvement in scores on a cognitive function test than participants who only took a placebo. Those results suggest that lion&rsquo;s mane might be helpful in treating mild cognitive impairment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-reduces-inflammation-and-inflammatory-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Reduces inflammation and inflammatory diseases<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom also has anti-inflammatory effects. It may even be capable of fighting off damage to the liver caused by heavy alcohol use, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2015\/418023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study that examined the effects on mice with liver injury from alcohol exposure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other studies in animals have found that extract of Hericium erinaceus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26933886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">products containing lion&rsquo;s mane extract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced the inflammatory activity of some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29156761\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammatory bowel diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27481156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ulcerative colitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-combats-symptoms-of-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Combats symptoms of depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research also suggests that taking lion&rsquo;s mane supplements might reduce some of the debilitating symptoms of depression, like fatigue, persistent sadness, hopelessness, difficulty concentrating, and loss of interest in daily activities. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/21\/1\/163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> review in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Journal of Molecular Sciences<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that although more research is needed into the specific mechanisms, lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom could have some therapeutic effects in relieving depression and helping people feel better.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-helps-treat-digestive-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Helps treat digestive diseases<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have relied on edible mushrooms like the lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom for centuries to treat certain digestive diseases. For example, a bacterial infection known as Helicobacter pylori<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/h-pylori-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H. pylori<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause stomach pain, weight loss, and even bloody vomit. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30806251\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies in animals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hericium erinaceus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extracts may be able to inhibit the growth of that bacteria, which could also reduce <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26853960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastric ulcers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-supports-the-immune-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Supports the immune system<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boosting the immune system is a popular reason for consuming lion&rsquo;s mane mushrooms. A study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fimmu.2017.00666\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in Immunology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the use of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hericium erinaceus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in mice with tumors showed promising results for the use of this extract in modulating the immune system.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-promotes-recovery-from-injuries-to-nerves\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Promotes recovery from injuries to nerves<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane may have the potential to help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21941586\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat nerve injuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and regain some function. A group of researchers studied extract of the fruiting body of Hericium erinaceus in rats with nerve injuries. They found that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2011\/580752\/#discussion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injured rats who took the lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom extract seemed to regenerate some nerve cells (axons)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the injured rats recovered some function in their affected limbs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"myths-about-lions-mane-health-benefits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myths about lion&#8217;s mane health benefits<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane is not a &ldquo;magic mushroom.&rdquo; It does not contain the psychoactive ingredient psilocybin, which can cause hallucinations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-lions-mane\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take lion&#8217;s mane&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a variety of ways to take lion&rsquo;s mane supplements, including capsules and tablets, tinctures, and powder. Lion&rsquo;s mane mushrooms are also available in dried and raw forms, which can be cooked and eaten.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&rsquo;s no universally recommended dosage amount, so recommended dosage amounts depend on the form of the supplement, the purpose, and the consumer&rsquo;s age and health.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6500611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 1,200 mg per day for eight weeks helped study participants who were obese or overweight realize improvements in sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/biomedres\/40\/4\/40_125\/_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a different study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that cognitive function was improved among people who consumed about 3 grams of lion&rsquo;s mane per day for 12 weeks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"capsules-and-tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capsules and tablets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane capsules and tablets are available in a variety of amounts. Universal dosing recommendations have not been established, since research is limited and potency varies by mushroom.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tinctures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinctures&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom tinctures are also available. A tincture is essentially a concentrated herbal extract that&rsquo;s taken orally, usually with a dropper, to deposit the liquid on the tongue.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mushroom-powder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mushroom powder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom powder can be purchased online or in stores. It can be mixed into hot water, tea, or other beverages such as smoothies or coffee.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychonutritionist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctalbott.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shawn Talbott, PhD, CNS, LDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, notes that it&rsquo;s also possible to take a tea made of dried mushroom powder and dry it back down to a more concentrated powder. &ldquo;With this approach, you would only need to take about 100 mg of the concentrate, but with the original whole mushroom powder, you would need to take at least ten times more (1000 mg),&rdquo; Dr. Talbott says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-consider-before-you-choose-a-lions-mane-supplement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to consider before you choose a lion&rsquo;s mane supplement<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As to the best way to take lion&rsquo;s mane supplements, that may be up for debate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;This is always a tough one with mushroom supplements because a lot of the products on the market are simply powders of the fruiting bodies&mdash;the above-ground part of the mushroom that is simply dried, ground, and placed into capsules and powder blends,&rdquo; Dr. Talbott says. &ldquo;In this form, you generally get a very low-potency product that may or may not work.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A supplement package may claim it contains lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom, but it may not specify what part of the mushroom it&rsquo;s made from. Dr. Cooperman explains. It could be made from the fruiting body on top, or it could be made from the mycelium, the bottom structure of the mushroom that resembles roots. Dr. Cooperman warns consumers not to place too much trust in lion&rsquo;s mane supplement labels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sergio-alvarez-bb3b79aa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sergio Alvarez, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CEO and medical director of Mia Aesthetics, agrees. &ldquo;These supplements may actually be made from any of three different but related mushroom species.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Talbott adds, &ldquo;Mushrooms are notorious for their ability to take up anything from their soil, so they can often be contaminated with heavy metals. Consumers should ensure that the products they choose are tested to be free of heavy metal contamination.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lions-mane-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion&#8217;s mane side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a general rule, most people tolerate lion&rsquo;s mane pretty well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2005290109600327?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies of Hericium erinaceum<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in rats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also haven&rsquo;t revealed any adverse effects.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Lion&rsquo;s mane can cause some abdominal discomfort in some people, but it seems to be a fairly safe thing to consume,&rdquo; Dr. Cooperman says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are a few groups of people who might want to embrace some caution:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking blood-thinning medication: Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S094471131000173X?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that extract of Hericium erinaceus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can inhibit or slow the clotting mechanism of blood. &ldquo;Lion&rsquo;s mane is generally safe but can thin your blood, so it&rsquo;s important to tell your surgeon if you take it and then stop doing so about two weeks before any planned surgery,&rdquo; Dr. Alvarez adds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with diabetes, especially if they are taking medication to help lower their blood sugar levels: Lion&rsquo;s mane is purported to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2221169117310390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidiabetic effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When multiple drugs or supplements with blood sugar-lowering effects are taken, glucose levels could go too low.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with allergies: A mushroom allergy is another reason to steer clear of lion&rsquo;s mane mushrooms or supplements, according to Dr. Cooperman. However, he says he is not aware of any potential interactions with other supplements that people should watch out for.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"making-lions-mane-part-of-your-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making lion&#8217;s mane part of your diet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Although supplements are acceptable, you will likely get more from eating the mushrooms directly if you can find them at your local grocer,&rdquo; Dr. Alvarez says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few simple ways to incorporate lion&rsquo;s mane into your diet include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a cup of tea with lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom powder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stir lion&rsquo;s mane mushroom powder into smoothies or milkshakes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add lion&rsquo;s mane mushrooms to broth or stock.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sautee or roast the mushrooms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add the mushrooms to stir-fry dishes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cook as you&rsquo;d cook a portobello mushroom and serve as a main dish.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make the mushrooms last longer before cooking or preparing them, store them in a paper bag and put them in the refrigerator. They should last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realmushrooms.com\/cooking-lions-mane-mushroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about a week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Before cooking them, brush the dirt off, wash them thoroughly, and allow them to dry so excess water can evaporate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s also possible to dry the mushrooms and store them in jars. Another option is to cook them and then store them in an air-tight container in the freezer, where they should keep for up to a year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before choosing a lion&rsquo;s mane supplement, it may be helpful to talk to your doctor about what you hope to achieve by using lion&rsquo;s mane. Lion&rsquo;s mane seems to promise a lot of benefits and appears to be safe for many people, although people with mushroom allergies may want to steer clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s important to have realistic expectations about the benefits of lion&rsquo;s mane. Although some research&mdash;largely in animal studies&mdash;has proven the benefits of taking lion&rsquo;s mane, more research is needed on human use. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/dietary-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not regulate nutritional supplements in the same way that it regulates medications.
