As an EC pill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/?drugLabelId=573\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the way Plan B works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is by delaying or preventing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ovulation-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ovulation is the time in your menstrual cycle, which is generally midcycle, when an egg is released from the ovary, travels down the fallopian tube, and is prepared to be fertilized and start a pregnancy. Plan B only works if you have not yet ovulated. It does not work if you have already ovulated or if you are already pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan B is a very effective type of EC. However, Plan B can still work up to five days, or 120 hours, after unprotected sex or birth control failure\u2014but it is not as effective as if you take it sooner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There can be some confusion about what Plan B is and is not. Although it can be used as an EC to prevent pregnancy, it is important to know the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan B is not an abortion pill.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan B does not work if you are pregnant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan B does not offer protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan B is not intended for use as a regular form of birth control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-normal-to-bleed-after-taking-plan-b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it normal to bleed after taking Plan B?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it is normal for Plan B to possibly cause some spotting or breakthrough bleeding. It may also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/morning-after-pill-emergency-contraception\/whats-plan-b-morning-after-pill\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect your next period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which may be earlier or delayed. When you get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-plan-b-affect-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your next period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the length and type of bleeding may differ from normal. For example, your period may be shorter or longer, more spotty, or heavier or lighter. Certain drugs affect how Plan B is processed in the body, which could cause breakthrough bleeding or even result in Plan B being less effective, which could lead to unintended pregnancy. Many forms of birth control are more effective when used consistently and correctly. Talk to your healthcare professional about which type of birth control is right for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-plan-b-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Plan B side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to bleeding and temporary menstrual cycle irregularities, you may notice some other mild common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/plan-b-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Plan B, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness or lightheadedness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast tenderness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting (If you vomit within two hours of taking Plan B, ask your healthcare provider if you should take another dose.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t any serious side effects associated with Plan B.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-can-i-get-plan-b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where can I get Plan B?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, anyone can get Plan B. You do not need a prescription, and you do not have to present identification. People of any age or gender can purchase Plan B over the counter at a pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist if you don\u2019t see it on the shelf, since some pharmacies keep it behind the counter. You can also ask your pharmacist any questions you may have about taking Plan B.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other places you may find Plan B include your local health department, family planning clinic, and Planned Parenthood locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-plan-b-bleeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for Plan B bleeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007496.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check in with a healthcare provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for medical advice if your period is irregular after one month or if you have long-lasting or heavy bleeding, other symptoms like dizziness or weakness, or any other severe or concerning symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, if you have symptoms of severe abdominal pain three to five weeks after taking Plan B, this could be a sign of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube).
