It typically originates in the esophagus <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach), and it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heartburn\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most often after eating or at night. There are many causes of heartburn, from medications like calcium channel blockers to health conditions such as obesity. Other triggers of heartburn are eating a big meal, citrus, acidic foods, tobacco, and mint. Alcohol can be a powerful potent heartburn trigger, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sean-ormond-443073169\">Dr. Ormond<\/a>, alcohol contributes to heartburn in these three ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32491384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The lower esophageal sphincter (LES)<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a ring of muscle called a sphincter that acts as a valve between the esophagus and stomach. The LES stays closed most of the time and protects the esophagus from acidic stomach contents by sealing the path from the stomach to the esophagus. Alcohol has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2880354\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relaxant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effect on this valve, allowing stomach acid to splash up into the lower esophagus (acid reflux), explains Dr. Ormond. \u201cThis acidic invasion is the hallmark of heartburn,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acid overload <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more likely to occur after alcohol consumption. Licorice<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, we\u2019re not talking about Red Vines. Licorice root, which is used to flavor black licorice and Sambuca, may also help relieve heartburn. One small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3123991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that taking a 75 mg licorice tablet twice daily significantly improved symptoms of indigestion, including heartburn.
