Your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fatty-liver-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet can play a large role in liver health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both negatively and positively, according to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Kovalchik<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a doctor of chiropractic, nutritionist, and educator at Sonoran University of Health Sciences School of Nutrition in Tempe, Arizona. Consuming high-fat, high-sugar foods can decrease liver function and even lead to liver disease, Kovalchik says, as can drinking excess amounts of alcohol. Meanwhile, a diet high in fruits, leafy green vegetables, and complex carbs can help keep your liver in tip-top shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many different foods that can improve your liver health, but some stand out as the best of the best. Here are 7 foods that help create a balanced diet for a healthy liver.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-foods-that-are-good-for-your-liver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 foods that are good for your liver<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The liver has a special ability that no other organ has: It can repair itself, or regenerate. But there\u2019s a catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no medicine or procedure to repair damage to the liver\u2014your only option is diet,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mngi.com\/provider\/ibrahim-hanouneh-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibrahim Hanouneh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a gastroenterologist at MNGI Digestive Health in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and co-author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regenerative Health<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have any metabolic risk factors, Dr. Hanouneh continues, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sleep-apnea-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s especially important to pay attention to your diet, since what you eat and drink can make the difference between liver health and liver disease. If you\u2019re looking to repair your liver, start with these seven foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-extra-virgin-olive-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Extra virgin olive oil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra virgin olive oil is one of the most beneficial healthy fats for the liver, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristinkirkpatrick.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristin Kirkpatrick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RD, dietitian at Cleveland Clinic and co-author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regenerative Health<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1756464623004152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she explains, extra virgin olive oil helped to reduce fat in the liver and lower liver enzymes in study participants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve liver health, you can cook with extra virgin olive oil, add it to sauces and dressings, and even enjoy olives in meals or snacks, says Kirkpatrick.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-cruciferous-vegetables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Cruciferous vegetables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All vegetables are beneficial to the liver, says Kirkpatrick, because they have fiber, antioxidants, and an abundance of liver-protective vitamins and minerals. In general, cruciferous vegetables are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/food\/food-groups\/vegetables\/the-beginners-guide-to-cruciferous-vegetables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extra high in fiber, folate, and vitamin K<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though one stands out above the rest when it comes to your liver: broccoli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Hanouneh, broccoli is high in vitamin E, which has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5789322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown in studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to decrease liver inflammation in non-diabetic patients with fatty liver disease. However, those studies also raise concerns about the large, prolonged doses of vitamin E needed to lower inflammation and the subsequent side effects, says Hanouneh, which include increased risk of heart attack and stroke. With those concerns in mind, many providers are cautious about using vitamin E supplementation for their patients with liver disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike high-dose supplementation, broccoli provides a just-right amount of vitamin E, making it easier to benefit from the nutrient (and its anti-inflammatory effects) without overdoing it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-oatmeal-and-other-whole-grains\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Oatmeal and other whole grains<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hanouneh says the liver is like your body\u2019s security gate, filtering out everything that goes into your body, and eating fiber\u2014which helps you move your bowels on a regular basis\u2014makes it easier for the liver to quickly and efficiently perform these filtering duties without getting overwhelmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can choose to eat pretty much any type of whole grain for liver health, but oatmeal is a superstar choice: Not only does one cup contain four grams of fiber, but it\u2019s also packed with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2022\/09\/01\/take-a-fresh-look-at-oatmeal-its-not-as-simple-as-you-think\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy nutrients like vitamin B1 and manganese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8625765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown to improve cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and can help with weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-coffee-and-green-tea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Coffee and green tea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your liver is responsible for processing the nutrients from the food and beverages you consume every day, and believe it or not, says Dr. Hanouneh, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coffee-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee is one of the most beneficial things you can drink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for liver health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudies have repeatedly shown that coffee is beneficial to the liver, decreasing inflammation and [possibly] reversing scarring in the liver,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt also counteracts the negative impact of drinking alcohol on the liver.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee has also been shown to help decrease liver enzymes and reduce the risk of chronic liver disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonoran.edu\/faculty\/jessica-kovalchik\/\">Kovalchik<\/a> says, as demonstrated in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4862107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the impact of coffee on liver health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers don\u2019t exactly know why yet, but Dr. Hanouneh says it&#8217;s the caffeine in coffee that gives it these beneficial effects on the liver; decaf coffee hasn\u2019t been shown to have the same effects. With that in mind, caffeinated teas like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4538013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green tea have also been shown to have some liver-protective benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and when you consider all of the other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/food-features\/tea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advantages to drinking green tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant benefits, just to name a few), it\u2019s reasonable to speculate that green tea could help keep your liver healthy just as well as coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-lean-protein\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Lean protein<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Hanouneh, the liver plays a crucial role in the metabolism of proteins, and people with liver disease often experience muscle loss as a result of changes in the liver\u2019s ability to make and store adequate amounts of protein. He asks all his patients with liver disease to eat an adequate amount of protein each day to prevent this muscle loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-protein-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-protein foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are healthier than others. Animal protein is usually considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/what-should-you-eat\/protein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a more complete source of protein than what comes from plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it should be lean (think poultry, some seafood, and eggs versus red meat). And while other types of fruit aren\u2019t \u201cbad\u201d for you, he notes that some are higher in carbohydrates than others and may not be quite as beneficial, like bananas, pineapples, and grapes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what type of fruit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you freely eat? Well, Dr. Hanouneh says watermelon probably has the lowest amount of carbs considering its high water content, but any and all types of berries are good choices, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/benefits-of-blueberries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blueberries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and strawberries to cranberries and goji berries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berries are chock full of polyphenol antioxidants, and some specific berries have been studied for their beneficial liver effects. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9314000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blueberry extract has been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve liver function in animal studies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8603491\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cranberry supplementation may aid liver health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and similar to coffee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9309278\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goji berries may be able to offset some of the liver damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> done by excessive alcohol consumption.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-omega-3-fatty-acids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you\u2019re adding plant-based proteins and lean seafood to your diet for their liver benefits, know this: You\u2019ll also be increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to help prevent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9023843\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Kirkpatrick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2023.1192099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she continues, omega-3s assisted in preventing the liver from storing too much fat from food\u2014and another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jci.org\/articles\/view\/171267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that omega-3 supplementation assists in reducing inflammation as well as reducing the risk of progression associated with a severe form of fatty liver (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH). Omega-3s are commonly found in fatty fish like wild salmon, sardines, and tuna, says Kirkpatrick, as well as avocados, walnuts, flax, and chia seeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-makes-food-good-for-your-liver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes food good for your liver?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these are seven foods to start with if you\u2019re looking to improve your liver health, they certainly aren\u2019t the only foods to eat to repair your liver. In general, Kirkpatrick says prioritizing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mediterranean diet <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of the most beneficial patterns for good liver health; that means eating plenty of certain food groups such as lean protein, whole grains, and fruits and veggies, while limiting ultra-processed foods, fast food, foods high in added sugars, and refined grains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis will also assist with better blood sugar management, which is directly related to better liver health,\u201d Kirkpatrick says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For liver health benefits, it\u2019s also a good idea to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid excess sodium, per Dr. Hanouneh, to prevent fluid retention and leg swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opt for foods high in fiber, like low-glycemic fruits, vegetables, lentils, and beans, says Kovalchik<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink plenty of water each day, i.e., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umsystem.edu\/totalrewards\/wellness\/how-to-calculate-how-much-water-you-should-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half your body weight in ounces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-else-can-you-do-to-keep-your-liver-healthy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else can you do to keep your liver healthy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to eating healthy, there are a few other ways you can improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle with your liver in mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercise.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kovalchik says physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which will also improve liver health. As long as your healthcare provider approves, she recommends aiming for two to three days of resistance and strength training and at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Protect yourself against environmental toxins.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your liver is responsible for filtering out the toxins we come into contact with each day, so you can make your liver\u2019s job easier by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/resource-center\/blog\/13-ways-to-a-healthy-liver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limiting the amount of insecticides, chemicals, cigarette smoke, and aerosol products you\u2019re exposed to regularly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or by taking protective steps when exposed, like wearing a mask and gloves).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limit alcohol.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alcohol can cause a lot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/effects-of-alcohol-on-your-health-and-liver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">damage to the liver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when consumed in excess; it contributes to fat buildup in the liver, causes inflammation and destroys liver cells (alcoholic hepatitis), and can create scarring in the tissues of the liver over time (cirrhosis of the liver).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Protect yourself from hepatitis strains.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hepatitis means \u201cinflammation of the liver,\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hepatitis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some viral illnesses specifically target the liver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cause disease, like hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Vaccines to prevent hepatitis A and B exist, and hepatitis D can also be prevented through vaccination for hepatitis B.
