Human papillomavirus (HPV) is no longer relegated to sex ed class\u2014it\u2019s a part of our public discourse. And while comedian Ali Wong might\u2019ve exaggerated when she joked, \u201cEverybody has HPV,\u201d she wasn\u2019t far off. HPV is incredibly common, infecting an estimated 90% of sexually active men and 80% of sexually active women sometime in their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most often, HPV clears up completely on its own. However, specific strains may cause genital warts and certain types of cancer, so awareness is key. Here, you\u2019ll find all the facts, figures, and information you need in order to form a thorough understanding of HPV prevalence, costs, complications, and treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-hpv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is HPV?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that spreads via genital and oral skin-to-skin contact. It\u2019s not just one virus. There are over 200 different types of HPV, and they manifest in different ways. Some types are asymptomatic, while others can cause genital warts or common warts on other parts of the body. These are often called low-risk HPV. By comparison, the types of HPV that might cause cancer, particularly HPV 16 and HPV 18, are considered to be high-risk HPV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe disease disproportionately affects those who were assigned female at birth, specifically of the uterine cervix,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alex-juusela-md-mph-facog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Alexander Juusela, MD, MPH, FACOG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a maternal-fetal medicine fellow at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.med.wayne.edu\/fellowships\/mfm-fellows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wayne State University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In these cases, \u201cHPV can lead to genital warts, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, anorectal cancer, and even oropharyngeal cancer. [&#8230;] In those who were assigned male sex at birth, HPV infection can lead to genital warts, penile cancer, anorectal cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That might have you squirming, but very few cases of HPV reach that point. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/pubs\/surv-manual\/chpt05-hpv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) showed that 9 out of 10 HPV infections resolve on their own within two years without causing serious health issues. More persistent cases, however, may require medical care. Doctors can typically diagnose cases that cause warts with a simple visual examination. In women, they may also use a pap test (also known as a pap smear) to test cervical cells for the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-hpv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is HPV?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 85% of people will get an HPV infection in their lifetime. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hpv\/parents\/vaccine\/six-reasons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are about 13 million people infected with HPV each year in the U.S., including teens. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hpv\/parents\/vaccine\/six-reasons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, nearly 1 out of 3 men have at least one genital HPV strain, and nearly 1 out of 5 men have one or more of the high-risk HPV strains. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/langlo\/article\/PIIS2214-109X(23)00305-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"hpv-statistics-worldwide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV statistics worldwide<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical HPV rates are highest among women in Sub-Saharan Africa (24%), Latin America and the Caribbean (16%), Eastern Europe (14%), and Southeast Asia (14%). (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36907737\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the HPV-associated estimated costs between 2014 and 2018, approximately 55% went toward routine cervical cancer screening and follow-up, 44% went toward treatment of HPV-attributable cancer, and less than 2% went toward treating anogenital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchhstp\/newsroom\/2021\/2018-STI-incidence-prevalence-estimates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lifetime costs for HPV-related cervical cancer are estimated to be approximately $24,208 per patient for carcinoma in situ (cancer that has not spread yet), $19,562 per patient for local metastasis, and $17,599 per patient for distant metastasis cervical cancer. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8629412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Translational Internal Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"causes-of-hpv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of HPV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is a sexually transmitted infection, so the most common causes are pretty clear: vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It doesn\u2019t, however, spread through an exchange of bodily fluids like some other STIs. Instead, it\u2019s transmitted via skin-to-skin contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most often, that means that it affects the vulva, vagina, cervix, rectum, anus, penis, and scrotum, but it can also spread to the mouth and throat. Although a vast majority of cases come from sexual contact,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33101476\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies suggest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that people can also contract it through close contact with infected skin, and mothers can pass it to their children during birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hpv-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV prevention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is widespread, so it might seem tough to avoid for anyone who\u2019s already sexually active, but there are ways to decrease the chances of contracting it. \u201cThe single best method for preventing HPV is by becoming vaccinated at a young age and prior to initiation of sexual activity,\u201d says Dr. Juusela. \u201cThe HPV vaccines prevent exposure to new HPV strains, but do not treat previous infections, precancer, or cancer due to HPV infection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gardasil-9\/what-is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardasil 9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an HPV vaccine that has proven to be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/infectious-agents\/hpv-vaccine-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost 100% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in preventing infections from all seven cancer-causing HPV strains if administered pre-exposure. The CDC recommends receiving two immunization doses between the ages of 11 and 12 years, but it\u2019s approved for children as young as nine years of age. Teenagers and adults ages 15 to 26 years can get three doses, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hpv-vaccine-older-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adults ages 27 to 45 years can also get vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0but should speak with their doctor first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing safe sex helps, too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/monte-swarup-10b17352\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Monte Swarup, MD, FACOG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB\/GYN and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hpvhub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV HUB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, second the vaccination recommendation and also suggests monogamous sexual relations, limiting the number of different sexual partners, and using condoms or dental dams, which help prevent transmission. \u201cWhile the use of condoms and dental dams may decrease HPV transmission, the virus can still be transmitted by skin not covered by condoms and dental dams,\u201d says Dr. Juusela.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throwing out the cigarettes may also be a good move. Dr. Swarup says, \u201cSmoking cessation is known to play a critical role in the prevention of HPV.\u201d Dr. Juusela agrees, saying, \u201cJust another reason to quit or never begin smoking!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-hpv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating HPV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most cases of HPV clear up on their own without health problems. In fact, many people won\u2019t even realize that they\u2019ve had it. While there\u2019s no cure for the virus itself, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hpv-treatment-and-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ways to treat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the genital warts and abnormal cells that it might cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn young, healthy persons assigned female at birth, current recommendations are to begin pap smear testing at age 21, and testing via both pap smear and HPV testing starting age 30,\u201d says Dr. Juusela. \u201cThe need for treatment arises when cervical HPV is persistent and\/or causes identifiable precancerous or cancerous changes. While uncomfortable, fortunately, pap smears can detect these changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with HPV who develop abnormal, precancerous cells, doctors may choose to remove them with cryotherapy, conization, laser treatment, or a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). No matter the method, Dr. Juusela says that the most important thing is to remove precancerous lesions before they turn into cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genital warts might disappear without treatment, but it could take up to two years, and many people don\u2019t want to wait that long. Plus, treating the warts can relieve irritation and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to sexual partners. Dermatologists may prescribe topical medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imiquimod\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imiquimod<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/podofilox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Podofilox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to control them, or they might choose to freeze the warts with liquid nitrogen, remove them with a scalpel, or remove them with lasers or electric currents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hpv-questions-and-answers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV questions and answers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>What is the cancer rate of HPV?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, the CDC estimates<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hpv\/parents\/vaccine\/six-reasons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 million new cases of HPV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only roughly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/hpv\/statistics\/cases.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">46,711 new cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of vaginal, vulval, penile, anal, rectal, and oropharyngeal cancer. Not all of these cancer cases stem from HPV, but a majority of them do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who is most at risk for HPV?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who engage in sexual activity at an early age and have numerous sexual partners are more likely to get HPV. People with weakened immune systems, people who use tobacco, and people with HIV infections have a higher risk as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How long does it take HPV to turn into cancer?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it can take 5\u201310 years for HPV to develop into precancerous cells and up to 20 years to turn into cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a punchline on standup specials.
