This can result in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK499942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious adverse effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including low blood cell counts. Due to this risk, healthcare providers will likely prescribe a lower dosage of these medications. Taking thiazide diuretics with allopurinol can increase your risk of side effects of allopurinol. Examples include skin rash, diarrhea, nausea, and gout attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"certain-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antibiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to allopurinol&rsquo;s interaction with ACE inhibitors, taking certain antibiotics with allopurinol may increase the risk of a skin rash. Examples of antibiotics include Amoxil (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), ampicillin, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/augmentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augmentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (amoxicillin\/clavulanic acid). If you develop any signs of a serious skin condition, such as fever, blisters, or shedding, get emergency medical help right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"warfarin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warfarin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allopurinol can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3798168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the effects of Coumadin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is a blood thinner that&rsquo;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nctr-crs.fda.gov\/fdalabel\/services\/spl\/set-ids\/addaac3d-6fb5-484f-8535-04eb410d2bf0\/spl-doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the treatment and prevention of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-clot-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means taking these medications together can make bleeding more likely. Due to this risk, it&rsquo;s important to report any signs or symptoms of bleeding to your provider right away. Examples include unexplained bruising, black or bloody stool, and nosebleeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re taking allopurinol with warfarin, your healthcare professional will monitor you more closely, and they may need to adjust your warfarin dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"allopurinol-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allopurinol food interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, foods may interact with drugs. Fortunately, allopurinol doesn&rsquo;t have any known interactions with foods.
