Khan, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified gastroenterologist with VHC Health in Fairfax, Virginia. \u201cIt can happen sometimes in conjunction with other viral symptoms, like an upper respiratory infection, or it can just be GI symptoms alone.\u201d Most often, you can thank a virus known as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/stomach-flu-treatment-and-medications\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norovirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the bug. In fact, norovirus is responsible for upward of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 million cases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of stomach flu a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/food-poisoning-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also a form of gastroenteritis, \u201ccaused most commonly by bacteria, but it can be caused by viruses such as norovirus too,\u201d explains Dr. Khan. Either way, the symptoms\u2014like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea\u2014are often identical. The most common remedies, like getting plenty of fluids and rest, are also very similar among the different causes, he says.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"6-remedies-for-the-stomach-flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 remedies for the stomach flu<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stomach flu will usually get better within just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/stomach-flu-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, when you are in the throes of it, there are some things you can do to help feel better and boost your immune system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-stay-hydrated\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Stay hydrated<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn terms of remedies for the stomach flu, the best thing to do is absolutely to stay hydrated,\u201d says Dr. Khan. Not only can dehydration worsen symptoms, but it can cause issues in and of itself, like a fast heartbeat or lightheadedness, he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gold standard for hydration is water. You can also turn to other liquids to help replenish electrolytes, like sports drinks, Pedialyte, juices, or broths, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vhchealth.org\/find-a-doctor\/profile\/ali-khan\/\">Dr. Khan<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/jon-simon-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Simon, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a board-certified internist and pediatrician with Mercy Personal Physicians at Hunt Valley in Baltimore, Maryland, also recommends an oral rehydration solution\u2014a mixture of water, salt, potassium, sugar, and bicarbonate\u2014which you can buy or make at home. \u201cThat increases the chances that you\u2019ll absorb enough water and not get dehydrated,\u201d he notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popsicles or Italian ice are another way to get fluids in, especially for kids. \u201cItalian ice is really good,\u201d Dr. Simon says. \u201cThat\u2019s a nice way to get tiny amounts of water very frequently.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, when drinking, \u201cit\u2019s key to use small amounts very frequently as opposed to guzzling large amounts at a time,\u201d he advises. And to ensure you\u2019re getting enough fluids, the goal should be to see clear urine when using the bathroom, says Dr. Khan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all fluids are created equal, though. You want to steer clear of:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alcohol:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This can worsen dehydration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Caffeine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI would avoid caffeine because that is actually a diuretic and it can also interfere with sleep,\u201d Dr. Khan says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dairy products:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This includes milk, milkshakes, and creamers, as these can cause GI distress and upset.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flat soda:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI would not recommend flat soda as it would not provide adequate fluid or electrolyte replacement,\u201d says Dr. Khan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-stick-to-a-more-bland-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Stick to a more bland diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your diet on the bland side is one way to get some nutrition without upsetting your stomach further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Khan explains, \u201cWith the stomach flu, people don\u2019t have much of an appetite and it\u2019s easy to lay in bed and not eat and that makes people weaker and feel worse. So trying to get something simple in their diet is better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saltine crackers, boiled vegetables, and boiled starches\u2014like potatoes, rice, and oats can be a good choice. Sticking to smaller meals throughout the day can be helpful, too.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while you can go for the easy-to-digest foods on the oft-cited BRAT diet\u2014bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast\u2014especially if they\u2019re already part of your routine, sticking solely to these choices<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2012\/0601\/p1066.html#afp20120601p1066-b3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be restrictive, particularly for children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, note experts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few eats you want to keep <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your plate when you have the stomach flu, including spicy, fried, and fatty foods, says Dr. Khan. Along with dairy drinks, it\u2019s also a good idea to limit the dairy food group in general. \u201cIt\u2019s not that it causes the problem, but it can prolong the illness a little bit,\u201d Dr. Simon says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-get-your-rest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Get your rest<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there was ever a time you could focus on your next TV binge, it\u2019s when you are sick. Getting plenty of rest is very important when you\u2019re trying to recover from the stomach flu, says Dr. Khan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people are going to be somewhat fatigued, notes Dr. Simon, and they should rest as much as they need to. As always, it\u2019s important to listen to your body. \u201cIf your body says you need a nap, then you need a nap,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-use-ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Use ginger<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGinger can help with nausea,\u201d says Dr. Khan. Research has shown that it can be useful in dealing with nausea and vomiting, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/morning-sickness-nausea-and-vomiting-of-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially if you\u2019re pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8252074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of kids with viral gastroenteritis, for instance, ginger helped lessen vomiting, as compared to a placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider adding ginger to your tea or soups, recommends Dr. Khan. \u201cBroth and soups are great ways to replete fluid and electrolytes,\u201d he says.\u201cGinger ale can be tried, however, keep in mind that the carbonation may cause further bloating and discomfort, thus potentially worsening GI symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-try-peppermint\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Try peppermint<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another helpful item is peppermint\u2014whether you go for peppermint tea or suck on a mint-flavored candy. \u201cPeppermint is another remedy that can be used for nausea and GI discomfort,\u201d Dr. Khan says. But don\u2019t go overboard: \u201cToo much of this, however, can trigger or worsen reflux,\u201d he advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-wash-your-hands-often\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Wash your hands\u2014often<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnother important part of stomach flu management is to make sure you practice good hand hygiene,\u201d says Dr. Khan\u2014this is key since, as anyone who has dealt with a home full of people with the stomach flu can attest, it can be quite contagious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s smart to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer often\u2014especially after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing foods\u2014as well as to use a separate bathroom from the infected person in your home if possible, says Dr. Khan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"stomach-flu-remedies-that-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach flu remedies that don\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it turns out, some remedies won\u2019t do much to help with the stomach flu. \u201cSome people, when they have these symptoms, they\u2019re looking for a medicine, like a prescription, but honestly, supportive care is really the best form of management for it,\u201d Dr. Khan says. Here is what won\u2019t work for the stomach flu.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antibiotics: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topping the list of things that won\u2019t help with viral gastroenteritis are antibiotics. That\u2019s because \u201cantibiotics are actually geared toward bacteria, whereas the stomach flu is actually a virus,\u201d Dr. Khan says. If you do have bacterial gastroenteritis\u00a0 from<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/food-poisoning-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, antibiotics might be used, but it\u2019s still not<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK513295\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always the case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain over-the-counter medications: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Simon explains, \u201cI usually tell people to avoid taking Imodium if you have diarrhea because, while it can give you temporary relief\u2014if you have to take a long car trip or something like that\u2014it sometimes can prolong the illness.\u201d This happens because the medication slows down the intestines, meaning the infectious source of the illness stays in your system a bit longer. If you do decide to use<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/loperamide-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (loperamide) or<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bismuth-subsalicylate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepto-Bismol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bismuth subsalicylate), be sure you don\u2019t have a fever or blood in your stool. \u201cIf those two symptoms are present, I wouldn\u2019t use those medications without approval from a healthcare provider,\u201d Dr. Khan says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Probiotic supplements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people may hear that having a probiotic is good during these times, but the research\u2014the data behind that\u2014doesn\u2019t fully show the benefit of that,\u201d Dr. Khan says. \u201cI think there\u2019s more research that needs to be done.\u201d And in particular, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gastrojournal.org\/article\/S0016-5085(20)34729-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Gastroenterological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t recommend probiotic supplements for children with the stomach flu.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-the-stomach-flu-when-natural-remedies-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat the stomach flu when natural remedies don\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies are really key, but there are some options you can turn to\u2014or ask your provider about\u2014if you\u2019re having a tough time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about symptom control with the stomach flu,\u201d Dr. Khan says. \u201cFor example, if the vomiting is really bothersome and is going on for an extended period of time, you could always ask your healthcare provider for an anti-nausea medication, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ondansetron-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zofran (ondansetron)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d He does caution against taking this type of medication for a long time, though, since it can have some potential side effects, like abnormalities in the heart rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter options like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or NSAIDs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are okay in small doses, says Dr. Khan. \u201cThis can help alleviate fever and muscle aches that can accompany the stomach flu,\u201d he explains. (Dr. Simon does note that Motrin and Advil can be irritating to the stomach, so be mindful when taking them and consider talking to your provider first.)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s not a whole lot that we can offer for stomach flu because it\u2019s a virus that has to run its course. This includes \u201cblood in the stool, blood in the vomit, fevers over 102 degrees Fahrenheit\u2014especially if that\u2019s going on for over 24 hours\u2014severe abdominal pain and any signs of dehydration, like having a fast heart rate over 100 beats per minute,\u201d advises Dr. Khan. You also want to keep an eye out for signs of severe dehydration, like feeling lightheaded, having dark-colored urine, or if you aren\u2019t able to keep anything down by mouth, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also be mindful of how often you\u2014or your child\u2014are using the bathroom to urinate, to look for signs of dehydration. \u201cFor babies, they wouldn\u2019t be wetting diapers. For adults, they should at least be urinating a couple of times a day and if not, that might signal more severe dehydration,\u201d says Dr. Simon.
