{"id":62543,"date":"2024-01-18T09:03:22","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T14:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=62543"},"modified":"2025-10-07T13:25:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T17:25:34","slug":"eliquis-interactions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-interactions\/","title":{"rendered":"Eliquis interactions to avoid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the branded version of the drug apixaban, is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people who have irregular heart rhythms, a condition known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/atrial-fibrillation-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation or Afib<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reduce the risk of forming a blood clot in the legs and lungs following hip replacement or knee replacement surgery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To treat and prevent blood clots forming in the veins of the legs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/deep-vein-thrombosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep vein thrombosis or DVT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or lungs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pulmonary-embolism-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulmonary embolism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis, a member of a group of drugs called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factor Xa inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, works by blocking proteins that cause blood to clot. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Eliquis can be an effective treatment option for many people, there are potential drug interactions that may occur. Because Eliquis is a blood thinner medicine that reduces blood clotting, it may cause bleeding, which can be serious and, rarely, fatal. Other medicines that also increase the risk of bleeding may cause an additional risk of serious bleeding if taken at the same time as Eliquis. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin or aspirin-containing products<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other medications used to help prevent or treat blood clots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals are known as inhibitors of CYP3A4 (an enzyme that allows the body to remove drugs or toxins)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antituberculosis and anticonvulsant medicines, which are known as inducers of CYP3A4<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to be aware of how Eliquis may affect the action of other drugs and how other drugs (and foods) may affect Eliquis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"eliquis-drug-interactions\">Eliquis drug interactions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that can interact with Eliquis. Some may increase the risk of serious bleeding, which is an adverse effect associated with Eliquis. Conversely, when Eliquis is combined with certain medicines, notably other anticoagulants, it may increase the risk of the side effects of these other drugs. Drug interactions may also adversely affect the blood levels of Eliquis and reduce its effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid drug-drug interactions, be sure to discuss all of the prescription and OTC medications you take with your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"aspirin-and-aspirin-containing-products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin and aspirin-containing products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because one of the effects of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to stop blood from clotting, it alone may result in bleeding more easily. Because of this, using Eliquis combined with aspirin may increase the risk of bleeding even more, including the possibility of severe and sometimes fatal bleeding. However, many multi-symptom medicines that contain aspirin are more apparent when reading the fine print. These include multi-ingredient medicines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/coricidin-hbp\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coricidin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alka-seltzer-plus-cold\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alka Seltzer Plus Cold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/excedrin-pm\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excedrin PM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is important to examine the list of ingredients to avoid aspirin-containing products when taking Eliquis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs-nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like aspirin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are pain relievers and can affect the blood&#8217;s ability to clot, particularly when taken over a longer time. NSAIDs may increase the risk of bleeding, particularly in the digestive tract, and this risk is greatly increased when NSAIDs are taken with Eliquis. It is important to talk to your healthcare provider before taking any of these drugs in combination with Eliquis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-anti-clotting-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other anti-clotting medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different classes of anti-clotting medications, and none are recommended to be used with Eliquis because they share the same adverse effect of increased risk of bleeding. Anticoagulants, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/heparin-sodium-porcine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heparin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Coumadin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jantoven\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jantoven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), slow down the body&#8217;s process of making clots. Antiplatelet drugs, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clopidogrel-bisulfate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clopidogrel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/plavix\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), ticagrelor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/brilinta\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brilinta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prasugrel-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prasugrel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/effient\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cilostazol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cilostazol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Pletal), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dipyridamole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dipyridamole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prevent blood cells called platelets from clumping together to form a clot. Factor Xa inhibitors (a class which includes Eliquis) work by blocking proteins that cause blood to clot. Other members of this class include edoxaban (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/savaysa\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savaysa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fondaparinux-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fondaparinux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/arixtra\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arixtra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and rivaroxaban (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xarelto\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before taking Eliquis, tell your healthcare provider if you\u2019re already taking an anti-clotting medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitors-ssris-or-serotonin-norepinephrine-reuptake-inhibitors-snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can prevent platelets from grouping to form clots in the blood, which can increase the risk of bleeding. Drugs that are CYP3A4 inhibitors can increase the risk of bleeding by increasing the blood levels of Eliquis. In contrast, drugs that are CYP3A4 inducers can speed up the elimination of Eliquis and reduce its effectiveness, thereby increasing the risk of stroke or blood clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that are CYP3A4 inhibitors include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antifungals<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ketoconazole (Nizoral, Xolegel and Extina)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/itraconazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itraconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">
