STIs affect about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/statistics\/prevalence-2020-at-a-glance.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 5 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States. There are over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/stds\/conditioninfo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 different STIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that women can contract, and the symptoms they experience depend partly on the type of STI they have, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/stds\/conditioninfo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health (NIH)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some symptoms of STIs in females are very mild, and some STIs don&rsquo;t have symptoms at all. Other times, especially as the weeks and months go on, STIs can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/sexuallytransmitteddiseases.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noticeable symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as unusual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/vaginitis-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal discharge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pain during sex or when urinating, itching, redness, and sores or warts in the genital area. Sometimes, severe pelvic pain, rashes, and fever accompany these symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the STI symptoms in women resemble other conditions, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/uti-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/yeast-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yeast infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bacterial-vaginosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s important to visit a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-early-signs-of-an-sti-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the early signs of an STI in females?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The early signs of STIs in women are usually vaginal or urinary, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/dr-michael-a-savino-md-11308105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Savino, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of quality for the department of urology at Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Vaginal symptoms include malodorous vaginal discharge that can be of yellow or green color, which may suggest gonorrhea,&rdquo; Dr. Savino says. It may be associated with feelings of pressure in your vagina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early signs of infections like human papillomavirus (HPV) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/herpes-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herpes simplex virus (HSV)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include a cervical or vaginal growth, such as a wart of a clear papule, according to Dr. Savino. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/hiv-basics\/overview\/about-hiv-and-aids\/symptoms-of-hiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early HIV symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include flu-like symptoms and mouth ulcers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The timeline of STI symptoms depends on the infection that you have. Most STIs start with few symptoms or no symptoms at all. Some take weeks or months to present themselves. Other STIs take years to show symptoms or never show symptoms at all, even though you may be a carrier of the infection and can pass it on to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/yellowbook\/2024\/posttravel-evaluation\/sexually-transmitted-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, different STIs have varying incubation periods, which is the time between when you become infected and when you show symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chlamydia: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven to 21 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gonorrhea:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One to 14 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/std-symptoms\"><b>Syphilis<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 to 90 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/herpes-statistics\/\"><b>HSV<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Two to seven days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hpv-treatment-and-medications\"><b>HPV<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Four to 240 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/trichomoniasis-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Trichomoniasis<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Five to 28 days<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"other-sti-symptoms-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other STI symptoms in females&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, STI symptoms in women are more subtle. &ldquo;Some less obvious signs of STIs may include mild symptoms or those that mimic other conditions, making diagnosis challenging, including fatigue, flu-like symptoms, or general discomfort,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bywinona.com\/authors\/dr-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Green, MD, OB-GYN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and co-founder at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bywinona.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/dr-mitchell-scott-kramer-md-11312030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitchell Kramer, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gynecology at Huntington Hospital in Huntington, New York, more subtle STI signs can be a slight discomfort in the vaginal or vulvar area, pelvic pressure or discomfort, changes in bladder or bowel habits, and anal itching.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sexually-transmitted-disease-vs-sti-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexually transmitted disease vs. STI symptoms&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/general\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, STIs describe the state of being infected with a sexually transmitted pathogen, whereas STIs describe the disease that develops as a result of the infection. However, the two terms are often used interchangeably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/sti-vs-std\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, STI and STI are umbrella terms used to describe viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can be transmitted through sexual relations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"types-and-stages-of-an-sti-how-can-i-tell-which-one-i-have\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types and stages of an STI: How can I tell which one I have?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;STIs often progress through different stages, but not all infections follow the same pattern,&rdquo; says Dr. Green. &ldquo;Stages may include initial infection, latency, and reactivation.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One well-known STI that presents in stages is genital herpes. In its primary stage, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK560808\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genital herpes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has severe symptoms that include painful lesions, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and fever. But in the reactivation stage, the disease has milder symptoms (genital ulcers) that last for a shorter period of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syphilis is the most well-known STI to go through a series of distinct stages, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/syphilis\/stdfact-syphilis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the primary stage, syphilis is characterized by sores of your vagina, anus, rectum, or mouth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the secondary stages, you may notice rashes on your body, including your genital, anal, or mouth area, but also on your palms, hands, and bottom of your feet. You may also have a fever, sore throat, hair loss, swollen glands, and fatigue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latent stage, you will have no symptoms, but the STI will remain in your body, especially if you aren&rsquo;t treated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the tertiary stage, syphilis is very serious and can damage internal organs. Tertiary syphilis is very serious and occurs 10&ndash;30 years after being infected.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-sti-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for STI symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have any STI symptoms, you should make an appointment with a healthcare provider right away. &ldquo;Usually, you&rsquo;ll want to see your OB-GYN, but you can also go to your primary care provider or to urgent care,&rdquo; Dr. Kramer says. Most of the time, you don&rsquo;t need to visit an emergency room for STI symptoms, but if you have a fever, vomiting, dizziness, or extreme fatigue, you should seek emergency care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to getting tested when symptoms are obvious, you should also get tested and screened for STIs if you have had experiences that put you at increased risk. &ldquo;Risk factors such as unprotected sexual activity with multiple sexual partners associated with any of the aforementioned symptoms should raise the risk and suspicion of STI and therefore prompt immediate evaluation,&rdquo; Dr. Savino says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs are diagnosed in the following ways, according to Mayo Clinic:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examination, either external or internal (for herpes ulcers, syphilis or chancroid ulcers, warts, and molluscum)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood tests for STIs like HIV, Hepatitis B or C, or syphilis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/urinalysis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urine tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomonas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testing of fluid samples from infection sites, such as sores or blisters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal or cervical samples (for human papillomavirus, gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas, candida,&nbsp; or bacterial vaginosis)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"complications-of-stis-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complications of STIs in women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s important to treat STIs in females, not only to relieve uncomfortable symptoms but also to prevent possible complications that can arise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaid.nih.gov\/diseases-conditions\/sexually-transmitted-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, possible complications of untreated STIs depend on which STI you are infected with but may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic inflammatory disease&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pelvic pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abscesses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sepsis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ectopic pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pregnant-with-cervical-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical cancer<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infertility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neonatal infections (passed from mothers to their babies during pregnancy and childbirth)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-female-sti-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat female STI symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs in females need to be treated to reduce symptoms, decrease the risk of transmission, and reduce the risk of serious complications. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/stds\/conditioninfo\/treatments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs caused by bacteria need to be treated with oral or injectable antibiotics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite or yeast are treated with oral or topical medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viral STIs are treated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/acyclovir-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antivirals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which don&rsquo;t completely eliminate the virus but can reduce symptoms and the risk of transmitting the virus to others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical destruction treatment (acid application or cryotherapy) for warts or molluscum contagiosum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People infected with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to take antiretroviral drugs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"living-with-an-sti\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with an STI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, getting treatment for STIs means that they can live full and healthy lives. Some STIs can be cured by treatment, including those caused by bacteria or parasites. STIs caused by viruses, such as HIV, genital herpes, hepatitis, and HPV, can&rsquo;t be cured, according to the NIH. Still, treatments for these infections can decrease symptoms significantly and also decrease your risk of infecting others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, see a provider right away if you know you&rsquo;ve been exposed to HIV or if you have symptoms such as vaginal or pelvic pain, unusual discharge, genital sores, or a new rash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although STI symptoms in women can resemble other conditions, like UTIs and yeast infections, STI symptoms require a proper diagnosis and treatment. Only your healthcare provider can rule out infection or other serious health conditions.
