But of all the usual aches and pains associated with menstruation, period cramps may be the most common: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/dysmenorrhea-painful-periods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of all menstruating women have cramps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> right before or during the first few days of their period. When period pain is severe enough to interfere with your life, that&rsquo;s known as dysmenorrhea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menstrual cramps are caused by the same muscle contractions that prompt the uterus to shed its lining and initiate your period. Those muscle cramps can vary from mild to severe, however, and many women find it hard to go about their daily lives without taking something to relieve their symptoms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, taking over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen are the most effective way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/period-cramp-relief\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat painful periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But there are other remedies, too, including herbal teas and supplements. Here are some of the things you can try to relieve cramps during your period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"over-the-counter-otc-medicine-for-period-cramps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter (OTC) medicine for period cramps<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two types of OTC pain relievers work well to relieve symptoms of period cramps: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hpvhub.com\/doctor\/monte-swarup-m-d-facog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monte Swarup, MD, FACOG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an Arizona gynecologist and founder of HPV Hub. Naproxen is usually sold as brand-name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while ibuprofen is sold as either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil?q=Advil%20(Ibuprofen)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib?q=Motrin%20Ib%20(Ibuprofen)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both of these medications are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with relatively low-risk profiles, meaning they&rsquo;re safe for most people to take as directed. People with certain GI disorders, people with kidney or liver disease, and people with a history of heart disease <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/11086-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-medicines-nsaids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may not be able to safely take NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who can&rsquo;t take NSAIDs may also find some relief from menstrual pain by taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-extra-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-tylenol-an-nsaid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain reliever and fever reducer but not an NSAID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, NSAIDs are generally considered the more effective option. According to a comprehensive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD001751.pub3\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of studies and clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, NSAIDs were better for period pain relief than a placebo and also more effective than acetaminophen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to that same review, the reason NSAIDs work better for period pain is because they target that pain at its source. Women with more severe menstrual cramps usually have higher levels of hormones called prostaglandins, which are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourhormones.info\/hormones\/prostaglandins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsible for causing uterine cramping during your period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. NSAIDs block prostaglandin production, leading to less cramping.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"herbal-remedies-for-period-cramps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herbal remedies for period cramps<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be some benefit to treating period cramps with certain herbal remedies added to your diet. Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4177637\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herbal medicine may be an effective way to relieve menstrual cramps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, quality research is lacking, so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8854496\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence is limited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone considering supplements should discuss their plans with their primary care provider to make sure they are safe. If you&rsquo;re considering using herbal remedies to treat your period cramps, here are some of the more common ones you might want to ask your provider about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chamomile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journal-jop.org\/journal\/view.html?doi=10.3831\/KPI.2019.22.028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study on the efficacy of chamomile tea for treating premenstrual syndrome (PMS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that chamomile tea has antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects that may reduce cramps. However, it&rsquo;s been difficult for researchers to pinpoint precisely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8242407\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how much chamomile is needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in what form it should be (i.e., capsule versus tea) in order for it to be effective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ginger: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/casa-natal.com\/meet-the-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Dean<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a licensed midwife and founder of Casa Natal Birth and Wellness Center in San Francisco, California, supplementing with ginger capsules may be a reliable way to relieve cramps. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/painmedicine\/article\/16\/12\/2243\/2460294?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent systematic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicated that taking 75 to 2,000 milligrams of ginger daily at the beginning of each menstrual cycle effectively reduced painful periods.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cinnamon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Research suggests that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1744388118303475?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cinnamon is a safe and effective way to treat period pain.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It may be even more beneficial when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0300060520936179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined with fennel and ginger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Similar to chamomile, however, it&rsquo;s unclear how much cinnamon is needed to reap the benefits and whether capsules are better than tea.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vitamin D:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dean also says taking 2,000 to 3,000 IU of vitamin D daily may reduce cramps. When taken at recommended doses, Vitamin D <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcwomenshealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12905-023-02284-5#:~:text=In%20reviewing%20the%20above%20studies,the%20severity%20of%20primary%20dysmenorrhea.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn&rsquo;t associated with any notable side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chaste tree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Finally, Dean says that chaste tree, or vitex, can be taken daily to regulate hormones and reduce monthly period pain. Chaste tree has a history of use within traditional medicine and likely doesn&rsquo;t have many adverse side effects, but it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK588847\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hasn&rsquo;t been well-studied in research settings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It may not be safe for women with liver disease or who take hormonal birth control or hormone replacement therapy. The recommended dosage for treating period pain is between 20 and 100 milligrams per day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"best-foods-for-period-cramps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best foods for period cramps<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&rsquo;s no evidence that any specific foods can relieve period cramps on their own, but Dr. Swarup says that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diets high in foods that reduce inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in general, may lead to fewer cramps. In other words, if you regularly eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and legumes, you may have less inflammation overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Melissa Dean, this is because inflammatory prostaglandins are at the root of period cramps. Disrupting that inflammation can help to reduce period pain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do this most easily by eating an anti-inflammatory Mediterranean diet, Dean says, as well as consuming foods that contain linolenic acid, such as salmon, pumpkin flax, sesame, and sunflower seeds. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3033240\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linolenic acid is a fatty acid shown in some studies to reduce symptoms of PMS cramps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"birth-control-for-period-cramps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control for period cramps<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many women, period cramps can be managed with OTC pain relievers, dietary changes, and home remedies like herbal treatments. However, some women still don&rsquo;t find relief with these strategies and experience menstrual cramps severe enough to interfere with their quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, there are other treatments available, including the use of hormonal birth control. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/painful-menstrual-periods-dysmenorrhea-beyond-the-basics\/print#:~:text=Using%20hormonal%20birth%20control%20usually,contribute%20to%20pain%20and%20cramping.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal birth control thins the uterine lining and decreases prostaglandin levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading to fewer uterine contractions and less painful cramping during periods. Dean says severe cramps that affect someone&rsquo;s quality of life are often treated with an estrogen-progestin hormonal contraceptive, such as combined estrogen-progestin oral pills, transdermal patches, or vaginal rings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dean advises that treating cramps is usually only a temporary solution for an underlying problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal menstrual cramps shouldn&rsquo;t be so severe you can&rsquo;t go to work or school. According to Dean, you should see a healthcare provider to discuss your period cramps any time that you feel your quality of life is impacted by the pain. You should also let your provider know if your menstrual periods come with heavy or intense <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/period-blood-color\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstrual bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially if you&rsquo;re frequently soaking through pads or tampons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, if you&rsquo;re experiencing menstrual-like pain in your pelvis, abdomen, or lower back even when you don&rsquo;t have your period, you should also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/periodpain.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make an appointment to be evaluated by a healthcare provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You could be pregnant or have an infection, an abnormality like a polyp or uterine fibroid, or a chronic health condition such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-endometriosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endometriosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many women experience some kind of pain or discomfort when they menstruate, whether it&rsquo;s in the form of headaches, lower back pain, or an upset stomach.
