It may cause pain in the lower left abdomen, but it can also cause lower back pain, pain during urination, and fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"acute-urinary-retention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute urinary retention\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inability to urinate causes some rather serious discomfort. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK538499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary retention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tends to occur more often in men than in women, often as a side effect of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"inguinal-hernia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inguinal hernia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/16266-inguinal-hernia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inguinal hernias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which occur in the groin, are the most common type of hernia. \u201cA hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles,\u201d says Dr. Brown. \u201cHernias can cause discomfort or sharp pain, particularly when coughing, bending over, or lifting heavy objects.\u201d They can also cause serious complications if not addressed, including small bowel obstruction or tissue death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"testicular-torsion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testicular torsion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The testicles can rotate or twist around when they are not well connected to the surrounding scrotum. When a testicle twists around the spermatic cord, it can cut off the flow of blood to the testicle, causing intense pain. It\u2019s relatively rare, affecting about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15382-testicular-torsion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 4,000 men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But when it does occur, it\u2019s serious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-possible-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other possible causes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also possible to feel pain in the lower left abdomen from causes that affect the entire abdomen or start on the right side. For example, pain that\u2019s associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/appendicitis-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appendicitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is inflammation in the appendix, will start on the right side, but if the appendix bursts, it could affect the whole abdomen, including the left side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/creakyjoints.org\/education\/crohns-disease\/symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), often causes cramps or crampy pain in the lower right side of the abdomen. Ulcerative colitis, another variety of IBD, can also cause pain in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibilities in this location also include abdominal wall strains. \u201cThese can be surprisingly painful and can go unrecognized,\u201d Dr. Brown says. \u201cSince the abdominal wall is a core muscle, it can be hard to heal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"should-men-be-worried-about-pain-in-the-lower-left-abdomen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should men be worried about pain in the lower left abdomen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the pain is mild, it might not warrant any immediate action. However, severe or persistent pain is a reason to seek medical care right away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why the urgency? Some causes of abdominal pain, including pain in the lower left quadrant, require immediate medical treatment. For example, \u201cTesticular torsion requires urgent surgery or manual detorsion of the testicle,\u201d says Dr. Raheem. According to the Cleveland Clinic, men who get treated within four to six hours usually keep their affected testicle, but only about one-half of the people who get treated after 12 hours keep their testicle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example of male left-side pain that requires immediate medical attention is diverticulitis. \u201cIf you have sharp pain that is localized and accompanied by fever, this could be diverticulitis, an infection in your colon, or colitis. You should see a doctor immediately if this is the case,\u201d Dr. Raheem says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men with pain in their lower left abdomen should consult a doctor. They should get immediate medical attention for certain coinciding symptoms, including the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of dehydration, such as extreme thirst, little-to-no urination, or dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe tenderness in the abdominal area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in bowel movements or urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood in stool or urine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrotal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men who know they have a history of certain medical conditions like heart disease\u2014or reason to believe that the heart may be involved\u2014should also not wait to see a doctor if they develop lower left abdominal pain. Additionally, men who have experienced a recent injury to their abdomen or undergone surgery or a medical procedure should also seek medical attention right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-is-the-cause-of-pain-in-the-lower-abdomen-in-men-diagnosed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is the cause of pain in the lower abdomen in men diagnosed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis will typically include several key elements, including a patient history, an exam, and possibly also some imaging tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo understand what\u2019s happening, we\u2019ll start by conducting a comprehensive history and physical examination,\u201d Dr. Brown says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the key questions that Dr. Brown says he would ask include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When did the pain begin?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where is your pain located?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the pain radiate?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does it worsen or come and go?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do certain movements exacerbate it?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you noticed any relief after having a bowel movement?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you experiencing diarrhea or constipation?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you had any fever or chills?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you noticed any blood in the urine?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patient\u2019s responses will determine the appropriate diagnostic tests. If the condition requires a doctor&#8217;s attention or a visit to the emergency room, the usual tests may include a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis, a complete blood panel, and possibly a urine analysis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a urologist who suspects that the cause of lower left abdominal pain in a male patient could be the result of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/testicular-torsion\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20378274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testicular torsion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely start with a physical examination of the scrotum.
