The extended-release version of venlafaxine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nctr-crs.fda.gov\/fdalabel\/services\/spl\/set-ids\/86860916-f0a5-4bf1-938c-a2b6a0c82c6e\/spl-doc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat social anxiety disorder. Also known by its brand-name counterpart, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/effexor-xr\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effexor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, venlafaxine belongs to a group of antidepressants called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and works by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain that help regulate mood and behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"venlafaxine-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venlafaxine drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venlafaxine can interact with many drugs. Most of these interactions increase the risk of side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"monoamine-oxidase-inhibitors-maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a type of antidepressant that is used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/depression-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/parkinsons-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, doctors don\u2019t commonly prescribe MAOIs because they can interact with medications and foods and cause an increased risk of common side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both venlafaxine and MAOIs can increase the levels of serotonin in the body. Taking them together can increase serotonin to toxic levels, and in rare cases, this can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/serotonin-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Symptoms of serotonin toxicity include high blood pressure, fast heart rate, sweating, muscle rigidity, changes in mental status, and seizures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this risk, do not combine venlafaxine with an MAOI. Use caution when switching from an MAOI to venlafaxine or vice versa. Wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI to start venlafaxine treatment. Wait at least seven days after stopping venlafaxine to start an MAOI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of MAOIs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azilect<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(rasagiline)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eldepryl<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(selegiline)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marplan<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(isocarboxazid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nardil (phenelzine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parnate (tranylcypromine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProvayBlue (methylene blue)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyvox (linezolid)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"medications-that-increase-serotonin-levels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that increase serotonin levels<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several drugs increase serotonin levels in the body. Examples include certain antidepressants, migraine medications, and pain relievers. Taking venlafaxine with any of these medications can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. If your healthcare provider prescribes these medications together, report any signs and symptoms of serotonin syndrome immediately. When first starting treatment and when your dosage is increased, the risk of serotonin syndrome is highest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of drugs that can increase serotonin include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithobid (lithium)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultram (tramadol)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/triptans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triptans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Imitrex<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(sumatriptan) and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Zomig <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(zolmitriptan)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amitriptyline<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fentanyl<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dexedrine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Prozac (fluoxetine) and Paxil (paroxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tryptophan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"metoprolol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metoprolol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its own, venlafaxine can increase blood pressure. When taken with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metoprolol-tartrate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metoprolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drug used for heart conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, venlafaxine can reduce its blood pressure-lowering effect. So, taking them together puts you at a higher risk of abnormal bleeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of NSAIDs include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil (ibuprofen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve (naproxen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indocin (indomethacin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"metabolism-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolism interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain drugs may slow the breakdown of venlafaxine in the body. Because alcohol causes similar effects, it\u2019s best to avoid alcohol while taking venlafaxine.
