When taking sildenafil, it is important to be aware of various drug interactions and other factors, such as certain foods, that can cause or worsen adverse effects or affect how effective this medicine is. Continue reading to learn more about sildenafil interactions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sildenafil-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil-drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you take sildenafil for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-guide-symptoms-causes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or PAH, the interactions are the same. This could result in dangerously low blood pressure. If you take medication for high blood pressure, consult your healthcare provider for professional medical advice before taking sildenafil. Certain drugs inhibit CYP3A4, slowing the processing of sildenafil. This results in a higher level of sildenafil in the body, which could lead to worsened or more serious side effects, including headache, indigestion, flushing, nosebleeds, dizziness, muscle pain, insomnia, vision or hearing loss, and low blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=f158fe10-d5dc-4432-b2c9-fc665401291b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information for Revatio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for PAH) recommends that CYP3A4 inhibitors should not be used while taking Revatio.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for ED) recommends using a low dose of sildenafil if a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor must be taken. Always consult your healthcare provider for medical advice because every individual is different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, it may be safer to avoid a CYP3A4 inhibitor altogether. Examples of CYP3A4 inhibitor drugs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antifungal medicines like Nizoral (ketoconazole) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sporanox\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sporanox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (itraconazole)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrolide antibiotics such as Biaxin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clarithromycin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/erythromycin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erythromycin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antivirals such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/norvir\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norvir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ritonavir) and other drugs that contain ritonavir (People who take ritonavir should not take more than one 25 mg dose of sildenafil in 48 hours)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"enzyme-inducers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enzyme inducers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the enzyme inhibitors mentioned above slow sildenafil processing, enzyme inducers have the opposite effect. They speed up how fast sildenafil is processed in the body. This means that sildenafil may be less effective, and a higher dose may be required. The patient will be monitored carefully if an enzyme inducer is combined with sildenafil. In some cases, the healthcare provider may recommend a different medication. Examples of these enzyme inducers include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dilantin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilantin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (phenytoin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rifampin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John&rsquo;s wort (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diet-supplements-can-interact-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dietary supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tegretol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tegretol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (carbamazepine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"guanylate-cyclase-stimulators\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guanylate cyclase stimulators<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adempas\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adempas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (riociguat) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/verquvo\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verquvo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (vericiguat) are part of a drug class called guanylate cyclase stimulators. Adempas is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, and Verquvo is used to treat heart problems such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">congestive heart failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Neither of these drugs can be taken with sildenafil. Combining one of these drugs with sildenafil can cause additive effects on lowering blood pressure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-sildenafil-products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other sildenafil products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who take sildenafil should not take more than one sildenafil product. For example, someone who takes sildenafil for PAH would not be prescribed Viagra (sildenafil)&mdash;or any other PDE5 inhibitor such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cialis-generic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tadalafil) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/levitra-vs-viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levitra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (vardenafil)&mdash;for erectile dysfunction.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sildenafil-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil-food interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"sildenafil-and-high-fat-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil and high-fat foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take sildenafil with or without food. However, if you take sildenafil after a meal high in fat (for example, pizza and ice cream), the medicine may take longer to begin working.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sildenafil-and-grapefruit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil and grapefruit&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit, as well as grapefruit juice products (including any type of mixed fruit juice that contains grapefruit), acts as an enzyme inhibitor, which may increase sildenafil levels in the body. Ask your healthcare provider how much, if any, grapefruit you can consume while taking sildenafil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-sildenafil-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other sildenafil interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the interactions noted above, there are some other sildenafil interactions to be aware of.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sildenafil-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil and alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sildenafil and alcohol do not have a defined chemical interaction, it is best to avoid alcohol while taking sildenafil for several reasons. Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to sexual issues, particularly when using sildenafil for erectile dysfunction (ED). Combining alcohol with sildenafil may exacerbate a decrease in sexual activity, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2917074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also, when drinking alcohol, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8130994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure can initially drop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and later increase). Since sildenafil can lower blood pressure, this combination could cause dangerously low blood pressure. It&rsquo;s best to ask your healthcare provider how much, if any, is a safe amount of alcohol to consume while taking sildenafil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sildenafil-and-allergies-medical-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil and allergies\/medical conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have had an allergic reaction to sildenafil (symptoms include hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) should never take sildenafil in the form of Viagra or Revatio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also certain health conditions where the healthcare provider will weigh the benefits vs risks of prescribing sildenafil. If the medication is prescribed, the patient will be closely monitored.
