Ovulation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovulation pain, also referred to as mittelschmerz, is one of the potential causes that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shandra Scruggs, RN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a licensed labor and delivery nurse, registered doula, and founder of Simply Birthed, shares. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ovulation-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when your ovaries release an egg, which happens about two weeks after the first day of menstruation. The abdominal cramping is usually lower down and one-sided. Other common symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower back pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tender breasts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher libido<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-implantation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Implantation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/pregnancy-week-by-week\/in-depth\/prenatal-care\/art-20045302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implantation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another possible cause of cramping, <a href=\"https:\/\/simplybirthed.com\/about\">Scruggs<\/a> shares. It may be a sign of early pregnancy. She notes you may feel pain near the ovary and tube on the side of the ectopic, as well as in the lower abdomen or pelvis area. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9687-ectopic-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other common symptoms include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoulder pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure in your rectum or bowel problems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"7-appendicitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Appendicitis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Dr. Jacobson says this most commonly causes abdominal cramping in the lower right area. You\u2019ll likely also notice <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/appendicitis-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other common symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain around the belly button<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and\/or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urination or more of an urge to go<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"8-kidney-stone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Kidney stone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/kidney-stone-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney stones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, different from urinary tract infections, are hard deposits in your urine. Dr. Jacobson says they cause pain in your back, on one side of your lower abdomen or pelvic area, and central pelvic colicky pain, depending on where the stone is located. Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/kidney-stones\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of a kidney stone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe, sharp pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain that fluctuates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A burning sensation when you pee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloudy urine or urine that\u2019s red, pink, or brown<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and\/or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needing to pee more often<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peeing smaller amounts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"9-irritable-bowel-syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Irritable bowel syndrome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a gastrointestinal condition, \u201ccan cause cramping along the course of the intestines, most commonly the colon in the left abdominal\/pelvic area,\u201d Dr. Jacobson says. You may also notice the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibd-vs-ibs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of IBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> listed below, especially after eating certain foods:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea and\/or constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"10-inflammatory-bowel-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Inflammatory bowel disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/inflammatory-bowel-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory bowel disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IBD) is the umbrella term covering both Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD can cause abdominal cramping, and the other common symptoms are listed below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood in your stool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"should-i-be-worried-about-period-cramps-but-no-period\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I be worried about period cramps but no period?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is typically normal, according to Scruggs, especially when it\u2019s related to ovulation, implantation, stress, weight changes, or lifestyle. Less common causes that might require more aid, she adds, include conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycystic ovarian syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PCOS) and endometriosis, as well as infections like PID.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsulting a healthcare provider is recommended if cramps are severe, persistent, or accompanied by concerning symptoms, particularly for individuals with a history of reproductive health issues,\u201d Scruggs continues. \u201cWhile occasional cramping is common, significant deviations from the typical cycle or severe pain should prompt professional evaluation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jacobson agrees that it\u2019s important to pay close attention to pain. \u201cFor acute onset of pain that starts suddenly and is unrelenting, or when in doubt, patients should seek medical advice from a healthcare professional,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, she encourages taking a urine pregnancy test if needed. If it\u2019s positive, contact your clinician \u201cor seek in-person care with cramps but no period due to concern of an ectopic pregnancy, which is an emergency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the cramps are left unaddressed or untreated, there could be complications. Primarily, they deal with fertility, but that\u2019s not all. And, of course, the cause matters, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if the cause is endometriosis, Scruggs says, there\u2019s \u201ca risk of progression, causing pain and potential fertility issues.\u201d Conditions affecting ovulation or the uterine lining, she continues, can also lead to fertility challenges. Untreated infections not only increase the risk of infertility but can also cause long-term damage to reproductive organs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are serious risks with an ectopic pregnancy, Dr. Jacobson adds, such as blood transfusion and even death. Ignoring appendix pain could lead to a rupture, sepsis (the spread of infection), and death, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More generally, if stress is at play, Scruggs says it can impact your menstrual cycles and period cramps, affecting your overall health and well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of those concerns emphasize the importance of having a healthcare provider give you medical attention and check everything out. But at what point is that necessary?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf cramps persist without the onset of a period for an extended period, or if there are additional concerning symptoms, like abnormal bleeding, fever, or signs of infection, or if the cramping is severe and not relieved by over-the-counter medication, it\u2019s advisable to seek the guidance of a healthcare provider,\u201d Scruggs says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of provider will depend on whether you\u2019ve talked to a doctor about this before and what piece of it all concerns you. \u201cA general practitioner can be a good starting point for an initial evaluation, assessing general health, taking a medical history, and performing preliminary tests,\u201d Scruggs says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, that professional may encourage you to meet with a more specialized professional. \u201cFor issues related to the reproductive system, a gynecologist can provide a more in-depth evaluation, performing pelvic exams and ordering relevant tests.\u201d (More on those tests in a bit.)
