Men are more affected by this condition&mdash;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/androgenetic-alopecia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 million men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as opposed to 30 million women, according to the National Institutes of Health. This condition has also been linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/menopause-questions-and-answers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women and conditions like insulin resistance and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a common condition characterized by hormonal imbalance in women.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"testosterone-and-hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone and hair loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the relationship between hair loss and sex hormones is complex, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9788837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">androgen hormones like testosterone may play a role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the hair cycle and hair follicle structure. However, the impact of androgens on hair depends on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/21\/15\/5342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where the hair is located<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the body. For instance, androgens tend to have a stimulatory effect on hair found on the face, the armpit, the pubis, and the chest but exert an inhibitory effect on the hair follicles in the region of the scalp. Meaning, testosterone encourages hair growth in certain places while limiting it in others.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androgens are male hormones that regulate the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics but are also produced in small amounts in the female body. Testosterone is the most common androgen. Other forms of androgen in the body include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androstenedione<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/testosterone\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can contribute to hair loss, particularly through its more potent form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT),&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kopelmanhair.com\/about\/meet-our-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah Kopelman MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dermatologist at Kopelman Hair Restoration in New York, New York. DHT is a byproduct of testosterone. &ldquo;Testosterone is converted into DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase,&rdquo; Dr. Kopelman explains. &ldquo;This occurs in various tissues, including the scalp.&rdquo; DHT <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/prsgo\/fulltext\/2013\/10000\/cause_of_androgenic_alopecia__crux_of_the_matter.9.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plays a role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in regulating the hair growth cycle and, in some individuals, can contribute to the shortening of the anagen phase.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is an overview of the hair <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK499948\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follicle growth cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anagen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the growth phase when the hair follicles form the cells that give rise to hair. This phase can last for several years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Catagen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This phase signals a transition from the growth phase to the inactive phase. It is also a period when the follicles renew and can last for a few weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Telogen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the inactive or resting phase. During this phase, the hair shafts are not growing, and depending on the location of the hair, the phase can last from a few weeks to close to 12 months.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exogen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the phase where the existing hair is pushed out and shed. It is typical to shed up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430924\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 hairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"role-of-dihydrotestosterone-dht-in-hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During male fetal development, DHT <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK539904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plays a vital role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the development of male external genitalia. However, at puberty, it is involved in the development of the prostate and contributes to the male pattern of hair growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While testosterone is a primary androgen and can bind to androgen receptors in hair follicles, studies have indicated that DHT, which is its active metabolite, is more potent and has about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2218-273X\/11\/4\/594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to five times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more binding affinity to androgen receptors than testosterone. &ldquo;In individuals predisposed to male pattern baldness, this binding can cause hair follicles to miniaturize, shortening their growth phase and leading to hair thinning and loss,&rdquo; Dr. Kopelman notes, adding that there are other key factors that may predispose a person to this form of hair loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, a 1998 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joe.bioscientifica.com\/view\/journals\/joe\/156\/1\/59.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Endocrinology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that hair follicle cells in people with balding scalps have higher levels of androgen receptors than the follicle cells in people with non-balding scalps. This means the presence of receptors also plays a role in androgen effects on the hair. In people with fewer androgen receptors, a high testosterone or DHT level may not cause hair loss. This is also where genetic variation comes into play. Scientists believe that some people inherit a variant of the androgen receptor (AR) gene that is more susceptible to the effects of testosterone and DHT on their scalp hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a nutshell, people with higher levels of testosterone tend to have higher levels of DHT because more of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourhormones.info\/hormones\/dihydrotestosterone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone is converted to DHT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But this doesn&rsquo;t always result in hair loss. Hair loss will most likely occur if those people have a variant of receptors in their hair follicles that are highly sensitive to androgen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can a person tell that their hair loss is linked to testosterone or DHT? According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedtrichology.com\/pages\/william-gaunitz-trichologist-hair-loss-expert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Gaunitz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certified trichologist and founder of Advanced Trichology in Tempe, Arizona, signs of hormonally related hair loss due to dihydrotestosterone may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss directly on the top of the scalp more than on the sides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive oil on the top of the scalp<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miniaturization, or constriction, of the hair follicles on the top of the scalp<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spontaneous adult <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/acne-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acne<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaunitz adds that women may experience hair growth in non-typical areas of the body, such as the chin or chest. People should consider seeking medical advice if they experience these symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-factors-that-contribute-to-hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors that contribute to hair loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors that can contribute to thinning hair or hair loss include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inheriting genes that make the hair follicle susceptible to shrinking and thinning can contribute to hair loss. A family history of pattern hair loss on either side of the family, male or female, can predispose a person to hair loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Age:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As people get older, their hair growth tends to slow down. Many of the hair follicles stop producing new hair at that point. Alongside hair thinning and hair loss, some people may notice <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10075351\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the diameter of their hair fibers, hair density, and hair color.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nutrient deficiency:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aside from their effect on health and well-being, deficiency of micronutrients <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2079-9284\/10\/4\/106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> iron, zinc, biotin, and magnesium may contribute to hair loss or impact recovery from hair loss disorders.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alopecia areata:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a rare condition that occurs when the body&rsquo;s immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing loss of scalp hair or body hair.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pregnancy and childbirth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some people experience hair loss after childbirth, and according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/hair-loss\/insider\/new-moms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Dermatology Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAD), this is normal.
