Ciprofloxacin is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat various types of bacterial infections, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pneumonia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ciprofloxacin-for-uti\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UTIs), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gonorrhea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anthrax, infectious diarrhea, skin structure infections, and infections of the bone, joint, stomach, and prostate, among others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value='{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}' data-sheets-userformat='{\"2\":6849,\"3\":{\"1\":0},\"9\":1,\"10\":2,\"12\":0,\"14\":{\"1\":2,\"2\":0},\"15\":\"Arial\"}' data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ciprofloxacin can treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bronchitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bronchitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sinus-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or UTIs, it should not be used for bronchitis, sinus infections, or certain types of UTIs if other treatment options are available. In pediatric patients (under 18 years of age), ciprofloxacin is only FDA approved for certain indications: complicated UTI, prevention of anthrax after exposure, and plague. This is due to the risk of serious adverse reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ciprofloxacin treats bacterial infections, it does not work for viral infections such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cold-vs-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common cold or flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ciprofloxacin is a generic medication commonly known by the brand name Cipro. It is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin-hcl\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in several formulations, such as immediate-release tablets (Cipro tablets), extended-release tablets (Cipro XR tablets), oral suspension (liquid), and by injection&mdash;as well as ear drops, eye drops, and eye ointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ciprofloxacin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, and diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pale skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme, unusual tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal itching and discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most serious side effects of ciprofloxacin include severe allergic reactions, skin reactions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/tendonitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendonitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, psychiatric reactions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/clostridium-difficile-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe diarrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (antibiotic-associated diarrhea), liver damage, liver failure, and others. Ciprofloxacin has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boxed warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most serious warning required by the FDA, that outlines some of these serious side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciprofloxacin interacts with various drugs, including Cymbalta (duloxetine), tizanidine, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/new-blood-thinners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warfarin, and others. For those who take ciprofloxacin, it&rsquo;s important to be aware of possible interactions that can affect the effectiveness of this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or cause other potential complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ciprofloxacin-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciprofloxacin drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciprofloxacin interacts with various drugs and classes of drugs, which can result in different complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cymbalta-duloxetine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta (duloxetine)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cymbalta\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (duloxetine) is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to treat anxiety and depression. When combined with ciprofloxacin, an interaction may occur. Clinical studies have shown this could result in potentially being exposed to as much as five times as much duloxetine as usual. This could result in serious Cymbalta <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cymbalta-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and toxicity. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that this combination be avoided. However, the patient should be closely monitored if the combination cannot be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"zanaflex-tizanidine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zanaflex (tizanidine)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zanaflex\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zanaflex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a skeletal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/muscle-relaxants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle relaxant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to treat muscle spasms. Zanaflex should never be combined with ciprofloxacin due to an interaction that increases Zanaflex levels in the body. This can potentially cause serious problems like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-blood-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and extreme sedation. The prescribing information states that this combination of drugs should never be used together&mdash;the healthcare professional can select an appropriate alternative medication for either Zanaflex or ciprofloxacin.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"warfarin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warfarin&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that requires careful dosing and close monitoring to ensure the individual is clotting properly. Warfarin has many drug interactions, and ciprofloxacin is on the list. When taken with warfarin, ciprofloxacin can increase the risk of bleeding. In severe cases, this could be life-threatening. Many healthcare providers will avoid this combination unless no other alternative is available. If the combination must be prescribed, the patient will be closely monitored.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drugs-that-increase-the-qt-interval\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that increase the QT interval&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On an electrocardiogram (EKG), there is a measurement called the QT interval. If the QT interval becomes prolonged, it could result in arrhythmia (irregular heart rhythm), which could be dangerous or cause death. In rare cases, ciprofloxacin can cause a prolonged QT interval. Ciprofloxacin should not be used in people with (or are at risk for) a prolonged QT interval. It should not be used with certain drugs due to the risk of causing a prolonged QT interval. A different antibiotic should be used. Examples of interacting drugs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinidine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Procainamide&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amiodarone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dronedarone&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotalol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tricyclic-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Elavil (amitriptyline) or Pamelor (nortriptyline)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrolide antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as erythromycin, Biaxin (clarithromycin), or Zithromax (azithromycin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antipsychotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Geodon (ziprasidone) or haloperidol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"oral-diabetes-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral diabetes medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciprofloxacin can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (low blood sugar) when combined with certain oral diabetes drugs (diabetes medications that are taken by mouth). This hypoglycemia can be severe or even cause death. If ciprofloxacin is prescribed in combination with an oral diabetes medication, the patient should be closely monitored. This mostly occurs with drugs in a class called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the following drugs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amaryl (glimepiride)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glyburide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glipizide<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs-nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are used to treat pain, inflammation, and fever. The ciprofloxacin prescribing information warns that when an NSAID is combined with a very high dose of a quinolone antibiotic, seizures have occurred. If you take an NSAID, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice. Although this interaction is not expected to occur with aspirin, other examples of NSAIDs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil, Motrin (ibuprofen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve (naproxen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex (celecoxib)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobic (meloxicam)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relafen (nabumetone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voltaren (diclofenac)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"drugs-that-decrease-ciprofloxacin-absorption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that decrease ciprofloxacin absorption<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain drugs can decrease the body&rsquo;s absorption of ciprofloxacin, making the antibiotic less effective. To avoid this problem, if you take one of the following medicines, you should take ciprofloxacin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you take the other medicine (you can also ask a healthcare provider or pharmacist if you need to help timing your medications):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carafate (sucralfate)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/antacid\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antacids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like TUMS, Maalox, or Mylanta<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins or supplements that contain calcium, iron, or zinc<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/phosphate-binders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phosphate binders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Renagel (sevelamer) or Fosrenol (lanthanum)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"viagra-revatio-sildenafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra, Revatio (sildenafil)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/viagra-generic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/viagra\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is used for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/erectile-dysfunction-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ED). Sildenafil is also available under the brand name Revatio, to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). Combining ciprofloxacin with sildenafil can result in higher levels of sildenafil in the body, increasing the risk of serious side effects like dizziness or headache. If the combination is prescribed together, a lower dose of sildenafil may be prescribed, and careful monitoring is recommended. This interaction may also occur with other ED medications such as Levitra (vardenafil) or Stendra (avanafil), so check with your healthcare provider for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ambien-zolpidem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien (zolpidem)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (zolpidem), a medication used to help with sleeping, should not be used in combination with ciprofloxacin. The drugs could interact, resulting in increased levels of Ambien. This could cause worsened <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ambien-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and toxicity from Ambien.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"theophylline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theophylline<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/theophylline\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theophylline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a medication for treating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There have been reports of serious and fatal reactions in people who have taken theophylline with ciprofloxacin. Reactions have included <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cardiac-arrest-vs-heart-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiac arrest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, seizures, status epilepticus, and respiratory failure. The combination of theophylline and ciprofloxacin should not be used together. However, close monitoring and a theophylline dosage adjustment may be required if the combination cannot be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ciprofloxacin-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ciprofloxacin drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, some other notable drug interactions with ciprofloxacin include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/veozah\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veozah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fezolinetant): Veozah is used to treat hot flashes associated with menopause. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This medication should never be used with ciprofloxacin because it could result in dangerously high levels of (and toxicity from) Veozah.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/addyi\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addyi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (flibanserin): Addyi is used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. This medication should never be used with ciprofloxacin because it could result in severely low blood pressure and fainting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dilantin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilantin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (phenytoin): Dilantin is a medication that prevents and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controls seizures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The ciprofloxacin prescribing information recommends using the combination of ciprofloxacin and Dilantin with caution, as unpredictable levels of Dilantin may result. Too-low levels of Dilantin could affect seizure control, increasing the risk of seizures&mdash;or, on the other hand, too-high levels can cause a Dilantin overdose. If the combination is prescribed, the patient will be closely monitored during and shortly after ciprofloxacin treatment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclosporine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclosporine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Cyclosporine is a medication used to prevent rejection after an organ transplant. It can also treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/osteoarthritis-vs-rheumatoid-arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RA) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/psoriasis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psoriasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
