Chris Elliot, who has been itching intermittently throughout the film, is revealed to be Cameron Diaz\u2019s longtime stalker when he appears with his face and head covered in large red welts. As she confronts him, Diaz asks, \u201cThe rash thing is still there, right?\u201d Scratching one of the hives, Elliot replies, \u201cThey went away for a while, but then you came back into my life.\u201d While this scene was exaggerated for comedic effect, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research has found<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that stress from any cause, even when not caused by unrequited love or obsession, can trigger the appearance of hives or rashes known as urticaria.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-stress-hives-common\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are stress hives common?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinically, urticaria is quite common. \u201cI see it every week in my practice,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubondermatology.com\/about\/deirdre-hooper-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deirdre O\u2019Boyle Hooper, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder of Audubon Dermatology in New Orleans, Louisiana. Worldwide, it is estimated to affect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of the population<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during their lifetime. And while urticaria can have other causes, stress is not an uncommon one. \u201cStress can make any rash worse,\u201d Dr. Hooper says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-a-stress-rash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes a stress rash?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason? Skin and the nervous system are intimately connected as early as week three of gestation, Dr. Hooper says. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0889159123003768?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that when you\u2019re stressed, the brain releases chemicals and triggers mast cells. Mast cells are part of the immune system that are present in the skin. They contain compounds called histamines, which contribute to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/inflammation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when released. This can cause a stress rash or hives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince many rashes may have multiple contributing factors, it is hard to know how common it is for rashes to be specifically related to stress,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcsnyc.com\/provider\/marisa-k-garshick-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marisa Garshick, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified dermatologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcsnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDCS Dermatology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York. Stress from any source can cause elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol which increases inflammation that can cause rashes, hives, or worsen already existing health conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/psoriasis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psoriasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/seborrheic-dermatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seborrheic dermatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eczema-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Garshick adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even worse, the stress from experiencing a rash can contribute to more cortisol being released, more subsequent inflammation, and more hives and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/itchy-skin-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itchy skin rashes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt becomes cyclical,\u201d Dr. Hopper says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-does-a-stress-rash-look-like\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does a stress rash look like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn general, stress-induced rashes and hives may still look similar to other rashes and hives, so it can be hard to differentiate,\u201d Dr. Garshick says. That said, there are some giveaways that you\u2019re experiencing a stress rash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives and rashes are characterized by raised red bumps or welts on the skin and are often itchy due to the histamine released by mast cells. \u201cIf you&#8217;re wondering if you have hives or different rash, hives are never flaky or scaly, they\u2019re smooth,\u201d Dr. Hooper says. They also tend to have an irregular presentation rather than appearing in any kind of pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also identify a stress rash or hives by process of elimination: If you haven\u2019t previously had an allergic reaction or allergies and haven\u2019t recently tried any new foods or medications, haven\u2019t used a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/contact-dermatitis-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new laundry detergent, soap, or skin care product<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and you\u2019ve been under a lot of pressure or experiencing emotional turmoil when the itchy bumps appeared, it\u2019s likely that the source of your rash is stress-related. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-do-stress-hives-or-rashes-typically-occur-on-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where do stress hives or rashes typically occur on the body?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mast cells are found throughout the upper papillary dermis, just below the surface of the skin, so stress hi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ves can appear anywhere, but they are frequently found on the face, head, neck, chest, and limbs. The earliest signs of stress rash are raised, red bumps, which may only be few at first, can vary in size, and may or may not itch. These bumps may increase in number as time goes on, and itch more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-stress-rash-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other stress rash symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing a stress rash or hives, you are likely to have the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smooth red welts or bumps of various sizes on your skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tingling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of stress or anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-stress-hives-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do stress hives last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every outbreak of stress rash or hives lasts the same duration. \u201cDepending on the type of rash or hives, it can last anywhere from minutes to hours, to days or weeks,\u201d Dr. Garshick explains. An outbreak often persists if the stress continues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A stress rash that lasts less than six weeks is considered an acute stress rash. If the stress rash lasts longer than six weeks or is getting worse, consult a dermatologist, Dr. Hooper says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have chronic urticaria, these symptoms may be persistent, lasting weeks or even months. Chronic urticaria is rare, affecting only 1.4% of the general population, but is twice as common among women as it is among men, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/allergies\/allergic-conditions\/skin-allergy\/chronic-hives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-stress-rash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat stress rash<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some cases, rashes and hives resolve on their own,\u201d Dr. Garshick says. But if your stress urticaria is not a brief, isolated incident, there are several treatments available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"topical-remedies-provide-temporary-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical remedies provide temporary relief<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important thing to know about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hives-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress rash or hives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Dr. Hooper, is that they have to be treated internally, not externally. While topical treatments may provide temporary relief, they don\u2019t reduce the histamine response that causes itchiness,\u00a0 redness, and swelling. While you can use home remedies like a cold compress or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-make-an-oatmeal-bath\/\">oatmeal baths for relief<\/a>, or you can try ointments like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-itch-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl cream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll likely need to take a pill to treat the rash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-itch-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"oral-medications-are-more-effective\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral medications are more effective<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stabilize mast cells so they don\u2019t release any more histamine,\u201d Dr. Hooper says. Depending on the severity of the stress rash, a dermatologist may prescribe an over-the-counter antihistamine like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fexofenadine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra (fexofenadine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or something more powerful, like a JAK inhibitor, a type of prescription strength drug that reduces the inflammation causing skin issues like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-eczema-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/rosacea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosacea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stress-management-prevents-recurrent-rashes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress management prevents recurrent rashes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications only treat existing hives and rash, however, so if you want to stop the cycle, you have to address the source of the problem. \u201cPart of treatment is decreasing stress in your life,\u201d Dr. Hooper says. That may mean to avoid flare-ups, you need to prioritize self-care and try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-surprising-ways-stress-affects-your-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress reduction techniques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like mindfulness, meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, or even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health medications like SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xeljanz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xeljanz coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-your-healthcare-provider-for-a-stress-rash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see your healthcare provider for a stress rash<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress hives and rashes are not necessarily something to worry about immediately, but there are definite times you will want to consult a professional\u2014preferably a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/when-to-see-a-dermatologist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dermatologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014for medical advice. \u201cIf the rash or hives are persisting, or if it is spreading, worsening, or impacting your quality of life, it is best to see a healthcare provider,\u201d says Dr. Garshick. In some cases, healthcare providers may be able to diagnose a stress rash or hives based on clinical appearance alone; in other cases, further work up may be needed that includes lab testing, allergy testing,\u00a0 or a skin biopsy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of people put off <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/the-benefits-of-dermatology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going to a dermatologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and try to self-treat, but you have to realize this is a feedback loop, and you are walking around with a manifestation on your skin and that&#8217;s stressing you out more,\u201d Dr. Hooper says. \u201cSeeing a dermatologist earlier rather than later can help that feedback loop.\u201d\u00a0 If you have a primary care healthcare provider, consider seeing them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not many skin conditions have a place in pop culture, but stress rash was actually a plot point in the 1998 Farrelly brothers\u2019 comedy There\u2019s Something About Mary.
