Much like daytime asthma, common symptoms of nocturnal asthma include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Despite the lack of understanding around the condition, experts have identified several potential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gaapp.org\/diseases\/asthma\/nocturnal-asthma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nocturnal asthma causes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here, we discuss six things that could be keeping you up coughing all night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-sleeping-position\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Sleeping position<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you fall asleep, your muscles relax, making your airways narrow and increasing resistance in your lungs. On top of that, \u201clying down can cause more mucus to pool in your airways,\u201d which can trigger coughing for people with asthma, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trueselfrecovery.com\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Daidone, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> internist and medical director at True Self Recovery in Rogers, Arkansas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-allergen-exposure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Allergen exposure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the day, your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allergy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exposure to allergens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> builds up\u2014one potential reason people with asthma start to feel worse as the evening stretches on. Depending on your asthma triggers, you may be having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3573758\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late-phase allergic reaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or one that peaks six to nine hours after your initial exposure. Alternatively, your bedroom or sleeping environment may contain allergens that cause asthma attacks at night, such as dust mites, pet dander, or other irritants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-room-temperature\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Room temperature<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cold-induced-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold air irritates the airways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so sleeping with the air conditioning on or a window open can lead to difficulty breathing. Cold air also tends to be dryer, which can make bronchial tubes constrict even more\u2014a common trigger for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/exercise-induced-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise-induced asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-hormonal-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Hormonal changes\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormone secretion changes throughout the day with your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/news\/2021\/study-biological-clock-may-explain-why-asthma-worsens-night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circadian rhythm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Epinephrine, the hormone that relaxes the muscles in the bronchial tubes, decreases at around 4 a.m. This may lead to the closing of your airways, or bronchospasms, and mucus secretion. \u201cHormones that are secreted in a circadian pattern that can contribute to nocturnal airway inflammation and asthma include cortisol and melatonin,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorrajd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pulmonologist and associate professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-acid-reflux\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Acid reflux<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/acid-reflux-at-night-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroesophageal reflux disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition where stomach acid enters the esophagus and causes symptoms like a burning feeling in your throat, gas, and chest discomfort. This condition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1753465810384606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often overlaps with asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and worsens at night when your body\u2019s horizontal position makes it easier for stomach acid to flow upward. Excess acid can trigger bronchial spasms in people with asthma.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-poorly-controlled-daytime-asthma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Poorly controlled daytime asthma<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your asthma symptoms are not well-managed by medications or lifestyle changes during the day, you\u2019ll likely experience the same or worsening symptoms at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"risk-factors-for-nighttime-asthma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors for nighttime asthma<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these potential causes, several risk factors make someone more likely to experience nocturnal asthma symptoms. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Obesity and excess weight:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/blog\/the-link-between-asthma-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain and obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially around the chest and abdomen, have been linked to asthma development. Although researchers are still trying to understand how this happens, one explanation is that extra weight can cause inflammation and constriction of the airways.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Smoking: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking weakens lung function and irritates your airways. In fact, research shows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5034599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the incidence of asthma is higher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if a patient\u2019s mother smoked during pregnancy. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke if at all possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exposure to air pollution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain air pollutants, especially smog common to larger metropolitan areas, may raise a person\u2019s risk of developing asthma and symptoms in the evening hours after all-day exposure.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergy history: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic rhinitis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6807062\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is significantly associated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with asthma development. Allergies can agitate asthma symptoms by causing mucus build-up overnight, which leads to nocturnal asthma issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Viral infection history:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Viral colds, influenza, or COVID-19 can worsen asthma symptoms and put existing asthma patients at risk for uncomfortable nocturnal symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-nocturnal-asthma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent nocturnal asthma<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there is no cure for asthma, there are many ways you can prevent attacks overnight\u2014particularly by minimizing the impact of common causes with lifestyle changes and medication. Here are tips that providers recommend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reduce allergen exposure in the bedroom: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dust mites, mold, and pet dander are common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/allergy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens that can close airways.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To reduce them in your bedroom, wash your bedding regularly, control humidity to limit mold growth and too-dry air, avoid feather pillows, use an air purifier with a HEPA filter, and keep pets out of your bedroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Adjust your asthma action plan: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your daytime asthma symptoms are out of control, it will inevitably lead to difficulties with your nighttime asthma symptoms. Talk to your healthcare provider about tracking your symptoms and changing your medication regimen. If you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-inhalers-price-list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an inhaler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, keep it on your bedside table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treat other health conditions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing underlying health conditions\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gerd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially GERD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sleep apnea, and allergic rhinitis\u2014can help relieve and prevent asthma symptoms. Keep up with any medications and prevention methods prescribed by your healthcare provider if you want to see improvements in your asthma symptoms as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Change your sleeping position: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although some positions will work better for others, sleeping on your back with your neck and shoulders elevated will help prevent nocturnal asthma. \u201cSleeping in a slightly elevated position can help prevent the pooling of mucus in the airways,\u201d Dr. Daidone says. \u201cThis can be achieved by using an extra pillow or wedge pillow.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4668140\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The right pillow height<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matters more than you may think for lung function at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Avoid other triggers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Of course, you should also quit habits like smoking if you have asthma. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asthma.com\/understanding-asthma\/asthma-triggers\/strong-odors-and-asthma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain scented products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like candles, cleaning products, or perfumes could also irritate your asthma. If you notice this triggers symptoms, find ways to cut out scented products, especially in your sleeping area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-stop-an-asthma-cough-at-night\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to stop an asthma cough at night<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the above prevention options, having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an asthma treatment plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will always make stopping a cough easier. Typically, this involves having asthma medication on hand and along with natural remedies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use medication.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your healthcare provider will prescribe asthma medication depending on the severity of your asthma, including preventive medications, such as long-acting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or corticosteroid inhalers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pulmicort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulmicort (budesonide)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/asmanex-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asmanex (mometasone)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and quick-relief, rescue medications such as Ventolin<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ventolin-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(albuterol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Keep a glass of water by your bedside. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow, small sips of water at the onset of a flare-up can help soothe your airways.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try breathing exercises.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your healthcare provider may teach you breathing techniques to get through episodes of uncomfortable asthma coughing. Sit upright while doing them as lying down flat or on your side will make breathing even harder.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your asthma cough worsens over the night despite all of these prevention techniques, contact your healthcare provider.
