Additionally, prednisone may cause short-term irritability as well as sleep disruption in women, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jaredlross\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jared L. Ross<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, a board-certified emergency medicine physician in Charleston, South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-blood-sugar-issues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Blood sugar issues<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glucocorticoids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucocorticoids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (another word for steroids), like prednisone, can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK531462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause an increase in fasting glucose levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Menstrual changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrednisone can both cause bleeding when it shouldn&#8217;t, and it may stop bleeding [during a period],\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prednisonepharmacist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megan Milne,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pharm.D., a clinical pharmacist who specializes in prednisone side effects. \u201cMost concerning for women still expecting a period is when their periods don&#8217;t happen.\u201d If you notice irregular periods or absent periods while on prednisone, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, mismanagement of corticosteroid dosages or taking too much of the medication could result in menstrual changes, including skipping periods, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002582.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MedlinePlus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-skin-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Skin problems<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, corticosteroid use is known to have adverse effects on the skin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4689033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found that topical and systemic use of corticosteroids increases your risk of skin rashes, rosacea, acne, dermatitis, itching, and hirsutism (excess hair growth on the face). Dr. Mandal says that you can expect skin changes if you are using prednisone, especially if you\u2019re using it long-term. \u201cI always caution my female patients to avoid chronic use since it can cause skin thinning, bruising, or dry skin,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-osteoporosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Osteoporosis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/osteoporosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteoporosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition that makes your bones become weak and brittle. Women, in particular, are prone to osteoporosis as they get older. Although taking prednisone doesn\u2019t cause osteoporosis if you just take it for a few days, anyone who\u2019s taking it for a more extended period and\/or at higher doses may be at risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK278968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone density loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-prednisone-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of prednisone in women?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there are quite a few potential long-term side effects from prednisone, says Dr. Ross. He says the most common ones include weight gain, skin thinning, stretch marks, acne, hair thinning, and hair loss. Increased risk of infections, such as rare fungal infections and tuberculosis, are also common the longer you take it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most serious side effects of long-term prednisone use is osteoporosis. \u201cThe bone loss from prednisone is one of the few permanent, irreversible side effects in women,\u201d according to Dr. Milne. \u201cIt&#8217;s a concern for both men and women, but usually worse and more common in postmenopausal women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other serious side effects from long-term prednisone use, such as diabetes, can lead to additional health problems and complications as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-prednisone-side-effects-start-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do prednisone side effects start in women?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrednisone side effects happen at different times, depending on the side effect,\u201d Dr. Milne explains. Side effects of prednisone are usually divided into two categories: short-term side effects and long-term side effects. Short-term side effects can happen even after a single dose of prednisone if the dose is high enough. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose required<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depends on the medical condition you\u2019re taking prednisone for and its severity\u2014the usual dose ranges from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/prednisone-oral-route\/proper-use\/drg-20075269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 mg to 60 mg daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, \u201cserious side effects like osteoporosis can start happening in the first three months on prednisone but can continue to cause further bone loss over time,\u201d Dr. Milne says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long prednisone side effects last depends on whether you are talking about short-term or long-term effects. \u201cThe short-term ones generally resolve within two to three days after stopping the medication,\u201d explains Dr. Ross. \u201cLong-term effects are typically permanent; however, there will usually be some gradual improvement over months to as long as a year after stopping an extended course of steroids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-prednisone-side-effects-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid prednisone side effects in women<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone side effects in women can be challenging, but there are ways to minimize them. Dr. Milne recommends that you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the exact dosing advice given to you by your healthcare provider; never increase or decrease the dose on your own.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage in weight-bearing exercise (like walking or low-impact aerobics) and consider taking<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements to help keep your bones strong and lower the risk of bone density loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat healthy foods and keep your weight in a healthy range.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quit smoking and avoid alcohol, both of which can increase the risk of prednisone side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"prednisone-contraindications-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone contraindications in women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone is safe for most women to take, especially on a short-term basis. Before using prednisone, let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People who are breastfeeding.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501077\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to LactMed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the National Library of Medicine, corticosteroids like prednisone are found in low amounts in breast milk. Although no negative effects have been reported among breastfeeding infants when exposed to corticosteroids, you may notice a temporary drop in milk supply when taking high doses. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether taking prednisone while breastfeeding is right for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2012\/202020s000lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people with the following conditions should exercise caution while taking prednisone:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cushing\u2019s syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory bowel disease or ulcerative colitis\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Existing mental health conditions, as this medication may exacerbate mood issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Existing infections <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-most-side-effects-are-treatable\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Most side effects are treatable<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, prednisone side effects in women are uncomfortable but don\u2019t require medical attention. But if you\u2019ve been taking prednisone for more than a week or two, you will need to taper off it gradually to avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prednisone-withdrawal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
