It comes as an oral tablet and intramuscular (IM) injection. The tablet is typically taken once daily, and the injection is given once per month. Naltrexone belongs to a group of drugs called opioid antagonists, which work by blocking the effects of alcohol and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While naltrexone is an effective treatment option for alcohol and opioid dependence, it has the potential to interact with other medications. These include opioid medications, some cough and cold drugs, and medications for diarrhea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to learn more about potential naltrexone interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"naltrexone-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the way naltrexone works, it may interact with drugs that contain opioids. Here are some examples of drugs that can interact with naltrexone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioid drugs are used to manage severe pain. They work by binding to specific receptors in the body, which changes the way the body perceives pain. This helps you feel less pain. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, meaning it blocks the opioid receptors to block the effects of opioids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of opioids include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ms-contin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MS Contin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (morphine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultram (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tramadol-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fentanyl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fentanyl<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roxicodone, Oxycontin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxycodone-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxycodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Percocet (oxycodone\/acetaminophen)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking opioids and start naltrexone, opioids won\u2019t be as effective. And if you\u2019re dependent on opioids, this can result in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK526012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioid withdrawal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013a potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms of opioid withdrawal include tearing, runny nose, goosebumps, muscle pain, light sensitivity, trouble sleeping, yawning, fast heart rate, high blood pressure, and high body temperature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to this risk, it\u2019s recommended to stop all opioid use a minimum of 7 to 10 days before starting naltrexone. And if you\u2019re treating opioid use disorder with naltrexone and relapse, stop taking naltrexone and contact your healthcare provider right away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"certain-cough-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain cough medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain prescription cough medications contain opioids. Similar to its interaction with opioid drugs, taking naltrexone with cough medications containing opioids can cause opioid withdrawal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promethazine\/codeine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuxarin ER (chlorpheniramine\/codeine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FlowTuss (hydrocodone\/guaifenesin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydromet\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrocodone\/homatropine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, healthcare professionals typically won\u2019t prescribe opioid-containing cough medications if you\u2019re taking naltrexone. They will likely recommend an alternative treatment for your cough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"certain-diarrhea-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain diarrhea medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some prescription diarrhea medications contain opioids as well. Examples include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lomotil\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lomotil <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(diphenoxylate\/atropine). Therefore, opioid withdrawal can occur if you take naltrexone with an opioid-containing antidiarrheal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imodium-a-d\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (loperamide) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/news\/health-of-the-public\/20190109loperamideabuse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">works similarly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to an opioid. So there is a risk of opioid withdrawal if it\u2019s combined with naltrexone treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-opioid-antagonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other opioid antagonists<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone belongs to a group of drugs called opioid antagonists. Opioid antagonists are used for a variety of medical conditions, including alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, opioid-induced constipation, and opioid overdose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of other opioid antagonists include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/movantik\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movantik<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (naloxegol)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narcan, Evzio (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naloxone-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naloxone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opvee (nalmefene)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because all opioid antagonists work similarly, they typically have similar side effects. Therefore, combining multiple opioid antagonists may increase the risk of these side effects. Examples include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, and headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"disulfiram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disulfiram<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to naltrexone, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/disulfiram\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disulfiram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to treat alcohol use disorder. Individually, they can both cause liver problems. Therefore, combining these medicines can increase the risk of liver problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"thioridazine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thioridazine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/thioridazine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thioridazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an antipsychotic medication used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/schizophrenia-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thioridazine and naltrexone can both cause sleepiness when taken alone. Taking these drugs together can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK534811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this side effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyleesi-bremelanotide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyleesi (bremelanotide)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vyleesi\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyleesi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bremelanotide) is a drug used to treat low sexual desire in certain women. However, it has the potential to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nctr-crs.fda.gov\/fdalabel\/services\/spl\/set-ids\/8c9607a2-5b57-4a59-b159-cf196deebdd9\/spl-doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact with naltrexone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When these drugs are taken together, Vyleesi (bremelanotide) can lower the body\u2019s absorption of naltrexone. This can make naltrexone less effective. For this reason, healthcare providers typically won\u2019t prescribe Vyleesi (bremelanotide) if you\u2019re taking naltrexone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"naltrexone-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone food interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes foods can interact with medications. Fortunately, naltrexone isn\u2019t known to interact with any foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-naltrexone-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other naltrexone interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone may also interact with alcohol, certain medical conditions, cannabis, and certain lab tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"naltrexone-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone and alcohol\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/alcohol\/rehab-treatment\/mixing-with-naltrexone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aren\u2019t any significant or dangerous effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from mixing alcohol and naltrexone, it\u2019s recommended to avoid alcohol while taking naltrexone. Naltrexone can lessen cravings to drink alcohol and block the pleasure you feel while drinking. However, you can still become impaired with loss of coordination, difficulty with concentration, and slowed reactions if you mix the two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, alcohol and naltrexone can both cause liver damage. Combining the two can increase the risk of liver damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"naltrexone-and-cbd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone and CBD<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis and cannabis products, including cannabidiol (CBD), can also interact with naltrexone. Mixing naltrexone with cannabis can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12491025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cannabis. Due to this risk, it\u2019s important that your healthcare team is aware that you use cannabis before you start treatment with naltrexone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"naltrexone-and-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone and disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain health conditions or health factors can increase the risk of side effects of naltrexone. These include people who have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioid withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken opioids in the last 7 to 10 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naltrexone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or any of its ingredients<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with all medications, if you\u2019re pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your healthcare provider before taking naltrexone. It\u2019s not known if naltrexone can harm your unborn baby or if it will pass into your breast milk and harm your breastfed baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"naltrexone-and-lab-tests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone and lab tests<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naltrexone can interact with certain urine lab tests that check for the presence of opioid drugs. Before taking any urine drug tests, be sure your provider is aware that you are taking naltrexone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-minimize-naltrexone-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to minimize naltrexone interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimizing naltrexone drug interactions is important to ensure safe and effective therapy. Before you start any new medications, consult with a healthcare professional. Provide them with an updated list of all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements you take. And discuss your medical history with them. This way, they can identify any potential naltrexone interactions before they occur.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to know the warning signs of a naltrexone interaction as well. If you\u2019re taking naltrexone and experience any new or worsening side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or loss of appetite, consult with a medical professional.
