With treatment, eyelid dermatitis can last anywhere from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a few days<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a few weeks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Cleveland Clinic and experts with All About Vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what\u2019s behind eyelid dermatitis? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main cause is allergic contact dermatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Brian Morris, MD, for UCLA Health. He notes a few other facts as well, such as 90% of cases are found in women, the skin condition can affect both eyelids, and a good prognosis is likely if people follow the treatment (but more on that later).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suspect a case of eyelid dermatitis? Read ahead for what to expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"typical-timeline-of-eyelid-dermatitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical timeline of eyelid dermatitis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to how long the symptoms last, there\u2019s not a super clear-cut answer. \u201cThe timeline of eyelid dermatitis can vary widely depending on the underlying cause, the individual\u2019s response to treatment, and the specific type of dermatitis,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/julia-giyaur-59711bb4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Giyaur, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified ophthalmologist, ophthalmic surgeon, and founding director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylaservision.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Laser Vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But generally, these are the phases and their timeframe:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"day-1-trigger-phase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day 1: Trigger phase<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various factors can trigger eyelid dermatitis, or eyelid contact dermatitis, according to Dr. Giyaur, including allergies or hay fever, irritants, or skin conditions. One of those skin conditions is eczema, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/eczema\/adult\/eye-problems%5C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe timeline begins when the underlying cause or trigger comes into contact with the eyelid skin,\u201d says Dr. Giyaur. A physical trigger or allergen is the most common cause of eyelid dermatitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hours-or-days-later-acute-phase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hours or days later: Acute phase<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Giyaur notes that the acute phase of eyelid dermatitis is when common symptoms\u2014such as redness, itching, burning, swelling, and skin dryness\u2014start to appear. \u201cThe severity and duration of this phase can vary,\u201d she adds. \u201cThe onset of symptoms might occur within hours or take several days after exposure to the trigger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drdianehilalcampo.com\/meet-the-ophthalmologist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diane Hilal-Campo, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified ophthalmologist and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trytwentytwenty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty\/Twenty Beauty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has found the same to be true. \u201cEyelid dermatitis typically develops within 24 to 48 hours from exposure to the irritant or allergen that triggered it, with redness, itching, swelling, and scaliness,\u201d she says. \u201cIt can onset very suddenly in that you wake up with all of these symptoms simultaneously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note here that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blepharitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blepharitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a chronic condition in which an eyelid periodically swells, gets flaky, stings, and causes other uncomfortable symptoms, may look similar to eyelid dermatitis. A healthcare professional can help determine the cause of the symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-following-weeks-to-months-subacute-phase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following weeks to months: Subacute phase<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some cases, eyelid dermatitis can become a chronic or recurring condition,\u201d says Dr. Giyaur. Flare-ups are especially likely, she continues, if the underlying cause isn\u2019t identified and managed. The amount of time it takes to find the culprit of this skin condition varies, too, she believes. Is it hay fever? Cosmetic products? Environmental factors?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One evaluation that can help is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/eczema\/types\/contact-dermatitis\/patch-testing-rash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a patch test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While thousands of substances can be allergens contracted through direct contact, patch testing\u2014a type of skin test\u2014can be completed by a dermatologist and provide results (aka the problematic allergen) within a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"days-or-weeks-after-the-cause-is-accurately-identified-treatment-phase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Days or weeks after the cause is accurately identified: Treatment phase<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Giyaur says treatment options for eyelid dermatitis usually entail topical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, emollients, or systemic treatment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydrocortisone\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrocortisone cream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often used first to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/contact-dermatitis-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat contact dermatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the affected area. Sometimes a short course of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral corticosteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be needed in more severe cases. FYI: While having to pay for medication is no fun, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmacy discount cards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cImprovement happens over days to weeks,\u201d she continues. \u201cIf the trigger is removed or avoided, and the appropriate treatment is administered, there may be a noticeable improvement in symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hilal-Campo believes the timeline is more toward the shorter end. \u201cOnce treatment begins, you can expect relief within several days,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that doesn\u2019t work? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eczema.org\/information-and-advice\/treatments-for-eczema\/topical-calcineurin-inhibitors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Eczema Society states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcineurin-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topical calcineurin inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TCIs) can treat adults and children older than 2 years old if topical steroids aren\u2019t cutting it. According to Dr. Hilal-Campo, two types exist: irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. \u201cTypically, with treatment of either form, you\u2019ll start to get some relief within two days,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis is simple, Dr. Hilal-Campo adds, in which your eye care provider will look for symptoms (such as redness, inflammation, itching, and flaking skin) and prescribe medication. \u201cI typically prescribe corticosteroids to relieve eyelid dermatitis, usually a topical ophthalmic ointment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-eyelid-dermatitis-go-away-on-its-own\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can eyelid dermatitis go away on its own?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, eyelid dermatitis can go away on its own, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s the best route. Receiving medical attention from a healthcare provider is a good idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEyelid dermatitis may go away on its own in some cases, but treatment is often needed to effectively manage and speed up the healing process,\u201d Dr. Giyaur says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hilal-Campo also \u201creally would not recommend letting dermatitis go untreated. You only get one set of eyes, and any condition related to ocular health can escalate quickly and put you at risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Giyaur lists some of the complications of untreated eyelid dermatitis, such as chronic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eye-pain-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eyelid discomfort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; secondary infections; changes in the skin\u2019s texture, color, and thickness; eyelash loss; cosmetic concerns such as redness, swelling, and scaling; vision changes (if the case is severe); and a psychological toll, including anxiety, depression, and reduced self-esteem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s crucial to seek prompt evaluation and appropriate treatment from a healthcare professional if you suspect eyelid dermatitis to prevent potential complications,\u201d she urges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, Dr. Hilal-Campo says that no treatment or knowledge of the trigger substance can result in indefinite eye dermatitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to approaching treatment, however, eye doctors will first look at two factors, according to Dr. Giyaur: the underlying cause and the severity of the condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-eyelid-dermatitis-come-back\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can eyelid dermatitis come back?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some unfortunate yet important news: If someone has eyelid dermatitis once, they may see it again. \u201cIt frequently is a recurring condition with waxing and waning symptoms that can last for years,\u201d Dr. Giyaur says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hilal-Campo agrees, pointing primarily to the trigger substance. \u201cIf you have not isolated the irritant or allergen triggering your eyelid dermatitis and removed it from your lifestyle\/routine, it can still cause dermatitis down the line,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, several factors can cause eyelid contact dermatitis to keep flaring up, though Dr. Hilal-Campo says there\u2019s a main reason. \u201cPlain and simple, dermatitis tends to continue to flare up because the trigger has not been removed from your routine,\u201d she says. People having difficulty identifying and avoiding the trigger are at a higher risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Giyaur lists other risk factors, such as allergic reactions to cosmetics or skin care products; climate changes; stress; underlying skin conditions; genetic predisposition; and inadequate treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, those tidbits don\u2019t mean the condition is chronic, nor does they mean everyone has an equal chance of developing it. According to Dr. Hilal-Campo, those with a personal or family history of atopic conditions and sensitive skin have an increased risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, the two experts share lots of preventive measures that can decrease the chances it\u2019ll pop up again (phew!). Without living in fear, keeping them in mind is a good idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-eyelid-dermatitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent eyelid dermatitis<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"1-identify-and-avoid-physical-triggers-and-allergens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify and avoid physical triggers and allergens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What might have contributed to the case in the first place? \u201cTake steps to avoid or minimize exposure to them,\u201d Dr. Giyaur recommends, adding allergy management is crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common contributors include metals, shellac, preservatives, topical antibiotics, fragrances, acrylates, and surfactants, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dovepress.com\/seven-common-allergen-groups-causing-eyelid-dermatitis-education-and-a-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-OPTH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many of these allergens may be found in makeup, skincare products, and eyewear. More specifically, on the note of metals, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17498412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dermatitis<\/span><\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found gold was the most frequently encountered allergen. A number of products that are used on or around the eyelids contain gold. Dr. Mari Paz Castanedo Tardan, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.umich.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/downloads\/Castanedo%20Tardan%20MariPaz%20October%20%205%20Plenary-Allergic%20Contact%20Dermatitis_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted the nickel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in eyelash curlers and eyeglasses can also increase the risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-practice-eyelid-hygiene-and-moisturization\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Practice eyelid hygiene and moisturization<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ocusoft-lid-scrub-original\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye cleansers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and moisturizers at the pharmacy, Dr. Giyaur suggests picking ones that are mild, hypoallergenic, and fragrance-free, then applying them gently. For the cleanser in particular, she says even baby shampoo will work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While cleansers remove debris and external irritants, as well as reduce the risk of inflammation, moisturizers keep eyelids well-hydrated, she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-avoid-harsh-cosmetic-products\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Avoid harsh cosmetic products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same guidelines apply here. \u201cChoose hypoallergenic and fragrance-free cosmetics for the eyes,\u201d Dr. Giyaur says. She also advises removing eye makeup before sleeping. (It\u2019s a lot to ask after a long night out, but it\u2019s important!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, Dr. Hilal-Campo encourages skincare and beauty products that are ophthalmologist-tested, safe for sensitive skin, and uncontaminated. \u201cI\u2019d recommend tossing all of your existing beauty products in case they are contaminated or contain allergens and starting from scratch,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-keep-your-hands-away-from-your-eyes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Keep your hands away from your eyes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially with allergies or after a long night, it\u2019s hard to avoid eye rubbing, but doing so <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help. \u201cBeyond avoiding the triggers that cause it to form in the first place, you\u2019ll want to avoid touching or rubbing your eyes as much as possible, which causes irritation and inflammation,\u201d Dr. Hilal-Campo notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can\u2019t help it? She advises solid handwashing beforehand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-protect-your-eyes-from-the-sun\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Protect your eyes from the sun<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grab those sunglasses (just not ones with nickel or gold, as mentioned above). \u201cUse sunglasses to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sun-protection-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shield your eyes and eyelids from UV radiation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as sun exposure can exacerbate dermatitis,\u201d Dr. Giyaur says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-sun-sensitivity\/\"><b>Which medications increase sun sensitivity?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-be-careful-and-hygienic-with-eye-products\"><b>6. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful and hygienic with eye products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eye-drops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye drops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are great for reducing irritation, dryness, and redness, they can surprisingly cause problems, too. \u201cOccasionally, allergy to medicated eye drops, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/glaucoma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma drops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may cause severe dermatitis,\u201d Dr. Giyaur says. To be safe, she urges bringing the eye drops to the eye doctor so they can ensure they&#8217;re okay to use (and how often and long they&#8217;re safe for).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar advice goes for contact lenses. For contact users, Dr. Giyaur encourages using proper hygiene and care guidelines. Additionally, she says to consider daily disposable lenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-talk-to-an-eye-doctor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7.
