Clopidogrel functions as an antiplatelet agent by blocking the glycoprotein IIb\/IIIa receptor activation. Inhibiting platelet blood cells makes the blood thinner, and how the drug is metabolized in the body makes clopidogrel susceptible to interactions with various medications and even some foods. If you are about to start or are already taking clopidogrel, better known by its brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/plavix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plavix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you need to know these interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"clopidogrel-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clopidogrel drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either amplifying or minimizing the action of clopidogrel can be a big deal when it comes to drug-drug interactions. The mechanism of the interaction is thought to be the inhibition of a liver enzyme, CYP2C19, which is required to convert clopidogrel to its active state.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the PPIs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (omeprazole) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nexium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (esomeprazole) are felt to be the biggest offenders and are usually avoided in combination with Plavix. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prevacid\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevacid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (lansoprazole) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/protonix\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protonix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pantoprazole) may have less negative interaction, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aciphex\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aciphex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (rabeprazole) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dexilant\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dexilant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dexlansoprazole) could be most preferable if a PPI is needed, based on having the least interaction. The need for both a PPI and Plavix should be reviewed with the prescribing providers to discuss any potential PPI or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/clopidogrel-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clopidogrel alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Get input from your medical provider about whether these interactions with clopidogrel require a change to be made.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticoagulants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going the other direction with a clopidogrel interaction, anticoagulants can cause bleeding when taken alongside the antiplatelet agent. This duo is often necessary and recommended by cardiologists and neurologists. Nonetheless, you need to be aware of it and talk to these specialists or your primary care provider about the balance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/plavix-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that could additively thin the blood with clopidogrel include anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, a concomitant calcium channel blocker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0735109708028325?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decreases the effectiveness of clopidogrel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
