That&#8217;s because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes can cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blood sugar swings and dehydration&mdash;common causes of dizziness or lightheadedness. Untreated or poorly managed diabetes can also lead to complications such as vestibular dysfunction, which makes you feel unsteady on your feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have diabetes and are feeling dizzy, it&#8217;s important to tell your healthcare provider. A healthcare provider can help pinpoint the exact cause of your dizziness and advise you on the best treatment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-diabetes-cause-dizziness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can diabetes cause dizziness?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons a person with diabetes might experience dizziness.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The most common reason why someone with diabetes would experience dizziness would be due to low blood sugar, [which] should be considered an emergency and should be treated immediately,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjmed.com\/assets\/documents\/gme\/pharmacy-residency\/sjhs-pharmacy-residency-faculty-roster-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blair Gingerich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., BCMTMS, a clinical care and retail pharmacist and diabetes educator in northern Indiana. She adds that dehydration and low blood pressure may also cause dizziness, though these conditions can affect anyone with or without diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing sudden dizziness from diabetes, the first step is to check your blood sugar levels. Short-term dizziness from high or low blood sugar can and should be treated immediately. If you are experiencing dizzy spells even when your blood sugar is stable, the cause might be linked to dehydration or a more systemic condition such as medication side effects and vestibular dysfunction, a condition diagnosed by a neurologist or an ear, nose, and throat doctor (ENT).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"low-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, dizziness is caused by a lack of sugar in the bloodstream. Low blood sugar, called hypoglycemia, is defined as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/diabetes\/overview\/preventing-problems\/low-blood-glucose-hypoglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a blood glucose reading below 70 milligrams per deciliter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mg\/dL).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that is not reporting low blood sugar, Dr. Gingerich says to use a finger stick and glucometer to verify the reading. &ldquo;If there is a discrepancy between the glucometer and continuous glucose monitor, treatment should be based on the glucometer results,&rdquo; she emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucose in the blood gives your body energy. When blood sugar is low, the body must conserve energy for the most important organs and functions. This can make you feel lightheaded and dizzy. &#8220;The likelihood of experiencing dizziness tends to be higher when blood sugar levels drop suddenly,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amyoffuttmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Offutt, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the founder of Heart &amp; Soul Integrative Medicine in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking or feeling jittery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To stop the dizziness caused by low blood sugar, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/treatment-care\/hypoglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADA recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the &#8220;15-15 rule.&rdquo; Eat 15 grams of carbohydrates, then recheck blood sugar levels in 15 minutes. If your blood sugar is still too low, eat more carbohydrates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some examples of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/imagepages\/19815.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 grams of carbohydrates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&frac12; cup of fruit juice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 glucose tablets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 tablespoon sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you encounter a person with diabetes who is too tired, lightheaded, or nauseous to eat, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glucagon-emergency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucagon Emergency Kit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can provide glucose via injection.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"high-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;Excess glucose in the blood can sometimes cause dizziness. High blood sugar, called hyperglycemia, is a blood glucose reading <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">above 125 mg\/dL before eating or 180 mg\/dL two hours after eating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/basics\/insulin-resistance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a hormone that helps turn glucose into usable energy. People with diabetes have a heightened risk of high blood sugar because their bodies either do not produce insulin or cannot process it effectively. In other words, sugar can build up in the bloodstream.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lead to a dangerous condition called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/dka-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic ketoacidosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DKA). This means you have too much glucose in your bloodstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your blood sugar is high but not higher than 200 mg\/dL, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/treatment-care\/hyperglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ADA) recommends exercising and cutting back on food. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, sports, and other aerobic activities are great ways to lower blood sugar naturally. Of course, if you are experiencing dizziness, it is important to move safely without a fear of falling. You can get your blood pumping even with upper-body movements while sitting safely in a chair.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dehydration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;When individuals with diabetes have poorly controlled blood sugar levels, there is an increased likelihood of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-much-water-drink-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dehydration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Offutt says. &ldquo;This is due to the fact that elevated blood sugar, when spilled into the urine, leads to greater fluid loss.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness alone does not usually indicate dehydration. In most cases, someone who is dehydrated notices increased thirst. Drink <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-much-water-drink-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or an electrolyte drink (avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/alcohol-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-coffee-dehydrate-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caffeine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can contribute to dehydration) and eat water-rich foods such as watermelon or celery.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vestibular-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vestibular dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532978\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vestibular system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a complicated network of internal structures and nerve connections in the inner ear that provides a sense of physical balance and coordination. People with vestibular dysfunction are more likely to lose their balance and fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6785312\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that diabetes patients have a heightened risk of vestibular dysfunction. In other words, people with diabetes are more likely to experience balance issues than those in the general population. The exact reason is not fully understood, but it may be traced to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/managing\/problems.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common diabetes complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nerve damage and hearing impairment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vestibular dysfunction linked to diabetes is likely to develop over months and years. This type of dizziness is not a short-term issue like high blood glucose. Dizziness is only one sign of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32644352\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vestibular dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. High blood sugar levels can cause build-up inside the blood vessels. For instance, you may feel lightheaded&mdash;woozy, like you&#8217;re about to pass out&mdash;or jittery and anxious.
