You might note that many of the drugs come from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">macrolide antibiotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/quinolones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quinolone antibiotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> categories. The antidepressants are most concerning because depression and ADHD often coexist. Inhibiting the enzyme leads to an abundance of the drug, possibly resulting in serious side effects, including suicidal ideation (suicidal thoughts), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/svt-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tachycardia <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(fast heartbeat), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sudden-onset-of-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panic attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, aggressive behavior, and psychosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antidepressants are some of the biggest names among CYP2D6 inhibitors. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac (fluoxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil (paroxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin XL (bupropion extended-release)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta (duloxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once again, having both ADHD and depression is not uncommon, so these drug interactions with the use of atomoxetine must be pointed out. If you are on both, call your doctor or pharmacist&rsquo;s attention to it and get medical help with deciding what to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"monoamine-oxidase-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAO inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interact with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9680847\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">numerous medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can precipitate serious problems. MAOIs should be avoided with atomoxetine, and examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyvox (linezolid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methylene Blue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nardil (phenelzine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azilect (rasagiline)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selegiline<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parnate (tranylcypromine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"atomoxetine-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomoxetine food interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s no need to be concerned about atomoxetine and food interactions. You may take one daily dose on an empty stomach or with meals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-atomoxetine-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other atomoxetine interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides drug interactions, atomoxetine can have more adverse effects when taken in the setting of certain medical conditions. Being aware of these interactions is every bit as important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"atomoxetine-and-severe-cardiovascular-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomoxetine and severe cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strattera can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-heart-rate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elevated heart rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two things our hearts and blood vessels do not like. Because of this, it is best to avoid atomoxetine when there are significant cardiac issues or vascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"atomoxetine-and-narrow-angle-glaucoma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomoxetine and narrow-angle glaucoma<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/glaucoma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narrow-angle glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an uncommon variant of glaucoma in which sudden increases in eye pressure can occur. Medications are one of the potential triggers for people with narrow-angle glaucoma. This concern is worth talking to your healthcare provider about before taking atomoxetine if you have bipolar disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"atomoxetine-and-liver-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomoxetine and liver disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your liver function is impaired, the body may not metabolize atomoxetine as readily. To prevent excessive levels and action of the drug, you may need a lower dose in the setting of significant liver disease, or you may want to look for alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"atomoxetine-and-prostatic-hypertrophy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomoxetine and prostatic hypertrophy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On their own, an enlarged prostate and atomoxetine can cause urinary retention, a condition in which the bladder does not fully drain. Taking the drug in the setting of prostatic hypertrophy could lead to a bigger issue with emptying your bladder. If you have prostate problems, double-check with the prescribing healthcare professional before taking Strattera.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-minimize-atomoxetine-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to minimize atomoxetine interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are all identifiable and predictable interactions between atomoxetine and other drugs or health conditions. It takes all possible eyes to watch out for them, though. That means that patients need to take an active role in this surveillance. Check for drug interactions among your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-list-template\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of prescription medicines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, herbal products, and supplements.
