In fact, in late 2023, its manufacturer, Eli Lilly, released another brand form of tirzepatide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for weight loss. Costs are a concern with these drugs, but coupons for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare prescription discount card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help. There are some contraindications with Mounjaro, such as when it should not be used and situations that require caution. These mechanisms reduce the incidence of high blood sugar (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and help us lose weight. Mounjaro\u2019s mechanisms do not cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their own, so tirzepatide can be used for weight loss even when people do not have diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, taking Mounjaro can increase the chance of having hypoglycemia if you are taking a medication that lowers blood sugar directly. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/insulins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the family of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, oral medications for diabetes, are the two big culprits for hypoglycemia to be mindful of. More frequent blood glucose monitoring may be advised if you are taking Mounjaro along with insulin or a sulfonylurea, such as any of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glipizide ER (glipizide extended-release)anticoagulant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glimepiride<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glyburide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humalog Kwikpen (insulin lispro)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novolog FlexPen (insulin aspart)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus Solostar (glargine insulin)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levemir FlexPen (insulin detemir)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To a lesser extent, other drug classes can magnify the hypoglycemia risk as well when taken with these other agents. The drug classes include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/quinolones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quinolone antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Taking them along with diabetes medications could require you to check your blood sugar levels more often and watch more closely for hypoglycemia symptoms, like weakness, dizziness, sweating, confusion, and shakiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"oral-contraceptive-pills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral contraceptive pills<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowing down how fast our stomach empties and intestines move their contents along is part of how Mounjaro works. Because Mounjaro causes delayed gastric emptying, it may lessen the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraceptives. This can affect how other oral medications are absorbed and how effective they are. In the setting of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/contraceptives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral contraceptive pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this can make them less effective and put users at risk of unintended pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to avoid this issue is to change to an alternative to birth control pills. Several birth control methods, such as contraceptive patches, injections, vaginal rings, and intrauterine devices, are not affected by Mounjaro. Talk to your healthcare team about what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">option is best for you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In that case, you may be advised to use additional barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, for the first month after starting Mounjaro and after any dose increase. Identifying them ahead of time can steer you clear of even starting Mounjaro.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mounjaro-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro and alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Mounjaro does not directly interact with alcohol, both substances have a propensity for causing pancreatitis. This inflammatory condition of the pancreas can lead to severe abdominal pain and a critical illness. Nonetheless, because pancreatitis can be a life-threatening condition, Mounjaro may need to be avoided if you have a history of pancreatitis in the past or are at high risk due to high triglycerides or alcohol use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch for symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking tirzepatide. The signs typically include abdominal pain and nausea. Common adverse effects of Mounjaro include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, so it can be challenging to determine what is going on. Additionally, GLP-1 agonists like Mounjaro have been linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8961394\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gallbladder disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can have similar symptoms. If you feel this way, get medical advice from your healthcare provider immediately, or seek urgent medical attention if symptoms are severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mounjaro-and-thyroid-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro and thyroid cancer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has placed a warning label on Mounjaro, calling attention to studies in rats showing higher rates of thyroid C-cell tumors, also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(12)60935-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medullary thyroid carcinoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MTC). It is a rare form of cancer in humans and is most often seen in individuals with Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). We do not know if tirzepatide is associated with MTC in humans. Still, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA&#8217;s boxed warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anyone with a history of MTC or a personal or family history of MEN2 should avoid it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mounjaro-and-gastroparesis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro and gastroparesis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gastroparesis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroparesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience feeling full or nauseated quickly with meals as a result of their stomach not emptying properly. Mounjaro slows gastric motility, making matters worse for those with gastroparesis. Your medical provider may advise you to avoid Mounjaro or may suggest certain precautions for you to take with the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mounjaro-and-diabetic-retinopathy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro and diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus can damage the retina of the eyes, a condition known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/diabetic-retinopathy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20371611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vision loss with this condition results from high sugars, causing damage to blood vessels in the retina, and curiously, rapid improvement in sugar levels has also been associated with the progression of the disease. Cases of diabetic retinopathy with tirzepatide use were noted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2107519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is an issue that should be discussed with the prescribing healthcare professional before starting Mounjaro, particularly if you have pre-existing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diabetic-retinopathy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mounjaro-and-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro and pregnancy and breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro could be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-during-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not much information from clinical trials is available. Due to the possible harms, one should not use Mounjaro during pregnancy.
