Meloxicam reaches peak blood levels around eight hours after ingestion. Giving a dog more than one NSAID at a time greatly increases the risk of severe side effects such as bleeding, kidney dysfunction, and liver dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dexamethasone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dexamethasone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shouldn\u2019t be combined with meloxicam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination greatly increases the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it\u2019s time to start a corticosteroid or another NSAID, veterinarians will typically discontinue meloxicam for a few days before initiating the new medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some drugs increase the risk of kidney dysfunction or liver dysfunction when combined with an NSAID. These include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and drugs that are toxic to the kidneys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with an NSAID like meloxicam increases the risk of bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meloxicam-dosage-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam dosage for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/meloxicam-dosage-for-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meloxicam dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involves an initial injection of 0.09 mg\/kg (0.2 mg\/lb) on the first day, followed by daily oral doses of meloxicam suspension at 0.045 mg\/kg (1 mg\/lb). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bi-animalhealth.com\/pets\/canine\/products\/therapeutics\/metacam-oral\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians may lower the dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over time to find the lowest possible effective dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-dogs-overdose-on-meloxicam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can dogs overdose on meloxicam?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs can overdose on meloxicam. A mild overdose can cause gastrointestinal symptoms including, vomiting and diarrhea. A severe overdose of meloxicam can cause kidney or liver failure and perforation of the stomach, which can lead to death. If an overdose is suspected, call the veterinarian, a veterinary hospital, or an animal poison control center for advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-i-give-my-dog-meloxicam-every-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I give my dog meloxicam every day?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam is intended for daily dosing to treat the symptoms of osteoarthritis. There are risks, so pet owners should watch for side effects. If any suspected side effects are noticed, discontinue the medication immediately and contact the dog\u2019s veterinarian.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-give-your-dog-meloxicam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to give your dog meloxicam<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians should prescribe meloxicam formulated for dogs rather than human meloxicam tablets. Meloxicam for dogs comes as a liquid and is administered using a dropper bottle or oral syringe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>General use<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow all the dosing instructions from the veterinarian.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give only the dose prescribed.
