Certain skin infections, skin conditions or disorders, or environmental factors may also be responsible for thick, peeling skin on the feet. This condition is contagious and can spread from direct contact with surfaces touched by the infected skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin peeling from an athlete\u2019s foot infection improves within two to four weeks after appropriate antifungal treatments. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/foot-fungus-types\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> options include over-the-counter (OTC) medications, such as antifungal foot sprays and powders. If symptoms do not improve or get worse within four weeks, a primary healthcare provider or podiatrist can treat an athlete&#8217;s foot infection. It is more common on the bottoms of the feet, but it can occur anywhere on the body. Dry skin looks flaky and can be thick with small cracks. If a particular irritant is causing eczema, many of the minor symptoms can go away in a few days by avoiding the irritant. However, it usually requires several weeks of treatment before symptoms diminish completely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can treat eczema on the feet by keeping them moisturized with coconut oil, aloe vera gel, or colloidal oatmeal. OTC antihistamine medications, such as Benadryl (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diphenhydramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), may also help. The skin may also look wet from the increased moisture, and odor may be present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperhidrosis can cause a skin condition called keratolysis exfoliativa, which causes chronic dryness to the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. In order to treat peeling skin on the feet due to hyperhidrosis, excessive moisture must be controlled. You can do this by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your feet dry, especially after baths and showers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing moisture-wicking socks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placing cotton between the toes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using OTC foot powders and antiperspirants<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your primary care doctor, dermatologist, or podiatrist can help with peeling from hyperhidrosis when other measures fail. They may prescribe prescription medication, such as Drysol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aluminum-chloride\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aluminum chloride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or anticholinergic oral drugs. It\u2019s associated with painless peeling of the skin\u2019s outer layers, mostly on the hands and feet, but the legs and arms can also be affected. Signs of acral peeling skin syndrome include red, itchy skin and sometimes blisters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment involves avoiding exposure to heat, friction, humidity, and other forms of moisture, which can exacerbate peeling from acral peeling skin syndrome. Although the underlying skin may be temporarily red and itchy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/peeling-skin-syndrome-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it typically heals without scarring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"toxic-epidermal-necrolysis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic epidermal necrolysis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK574530\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic epidermal necrolysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a life-threatening skin disorder due to drug reactions. Symptoms include skin that peels and blisters to the point that the area is raw and causes intense pain. Because this is such a rapidly progressing and very serious condition, it must be managed in a hospital setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"most-importantly-it-s-treatable\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, it\u2019s treatable<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reasons for thick, peeling skin on the feet vary, but commonly include fungal infections like athlete\u2019s foot, psoriasis, eczema, and skin that is either too dry or exposed to too much moisture. There are a variety of home remedies, OTC medications, and lotions to treat dry, peeling skin on the feet. However, if thick, peeling skin on the feet continues, worsens, or is accompanied by open sores, redness that spreads, or swelling, it could be a sign of an underlying condition that requires close monitoring.
